Association between the existence of neonatal congenital anomalies and maternal postpartum depression up to 6 months after delivery: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern; however, its association with congenital anomalies (CAs) rem … ion between types and severities of CAs, while the study's focus on mothers alone without including fathers may not capture the full spectrum of parental mental health impacts. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that mothers of neonates with CAs have a significantly increased risk of PPD, which persists up to 6 months after delivery.

Parental engagement in an early intervention program for anorexia nervosa: a qualitative study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe chronic condition requiring early and effective intervention. Family involvement is considered a cornerstone of adolescent treatment, yet the specific dynamics of early parental engagement into care remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the processes underlying parental involvement in early care for adolescents with AN, within the context of a family-based day program (EVAFAM) in France. We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 15 parents (7 fathers, 8 mothers) whose adolescents participated in the EVAFAM program b…

The effects of familial factors on the early childhood caries of preschool children: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood caries (ECC) are highly prevalent globally. This study aims to identify evidence-based familial factors to increase the risk-based management of ECC. METHODS: A total of 405 children (aged 0-72 months) presented to the pediatric dentistry department within 2 years were observed via a dental mirror and explorer under dental unit lighting. ECC was diagnosed via visual examination using World Health Organization (WHO) and International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) scores. A total of 405 mothers and 399 fathers were interviewed in this study, and a …

Parents' experience of being present or absent during anesthesia induction of children under six months of age. A mixed randomized controlled study.

PURPOSE: To investigate parents' experiences of being present during anesthesia induction in young infants. DESIGN: A mixed randomized cont … alysed using meaning-oriented thematic analysis. RESULTS: Pre-induction anxiety was common in both fathers (51 %) and mothers (73 %) but there was no difference in the full APAIS score between present and absent groups. However, the qualitative data revealed that parents preferred to be present despite different levels of anxiety. Being present was to ga …

Compassionate Perinatal Loss Care Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic in Australia: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Compassionate care from healthcare professionals is vital for parents following perinatal loss. Changes to maternity care during the COVID-19 pandemic affected perinatal loss care and illuminated the need for new responses. This study reports Australian findings from an international collaboration (PUDDLES) of seven countries investigating parents' experiences of care following perinatal loss during COVID-19. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 mothers and 3 fathers who experienced stillbirth, neonatal death, or termination of pregnancy for medical reasons d…

Adaptation of a couples intervention to promote coparenting and reduce hazardous drinking during transition to parenthood.

INTRODUCTION: Hazardous drinking by fathers poses a significant risk for negative family interactions and child outcomes. The transition to parenthood may be a time when expectant parents are potentially motivated for health behavior change, suggesting that implementing preventive interventions during this period may be particularly effective. This article provides an overview of the rationale for an innovative prevention strategy incorporating alcohol-use intervention with a family-focused program. METHOD: We describe the process of integration and adaptation of two evidence-based interventi…

A qualitative study on the experiences of caregivers of children undergoing surgery for congenital heart diseases.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the experiences of caregivers of pediatric cardiac surgery patients, aiming to deepen understanding of their role and improve the caregiving process. METHODS: A qualitative, phenomenological approach was employed using individual, semi-structured interviews with a heterogeneous sample of caregivers (both mothers and fathers) of children who had undergone surgery for congenital heart disease. Interviews were conducted face-to-face from June 2023 to May 2024, following Creswell's interview techniques. Data collection and analysis were performed simultaneously usin…

Parental Folate Deficiency Inhibits Proliferation and Increases Apoptosis of Neural Stem Cells in Rat Offspring: Aggravating Telomere Attrition as a Potential Mechanism.

The effect of maternal folate status on the fetal central nervous system (CNS) is well recognized, while evidence is emerging that such an association also exists between fathers and offspring. The biological functions of telomeres and telomerase are also related to neural cell proliferation and apoptosis. The study aimed to investigate the effect of parental folate deficiency on the proliferation and apoptosis of neural stem cells (NSCs) in neonatal offspring and the role of telomeres in this effect. In this study, rats were divided into four groups: maternal folate-deficient and paternal fol…

Factor structure and validity of the Parental Competence Questionnaire in the Paediatric Hospital Emergency Setting (ECP-U).

OBJECTIVE: To confirm the structure and examine the psychometric properties of the Parental Competence Questionnaire in the Paediatric Hospital Emergency Setting (ECP-U). METHODS: An instrumental validation study of the ECP-U questionnaire and an examination of its psychometric properties were carried out. RESULTS: The participants were 260 mothers and fathers seeking care in the paediatric emergency department of a hospital in Valencia (Spain) with children aged 0 to 14 years old. The five-factor structure of the ECP-U was confirmed with excellent statistical fits. Second-order models and a…

Interpretative Phenomenology of Grief following Reproductive Loss: A Narrative Review and Considerations on Improving Support.

The loss of pregnancy through miscarriage or stillbirth is typically an unexpected and highly distressing event for parents. While death in any form may be overwhelming to those bereaved, pregnancy and newborn loss are unique in several ways because they involve the added loss of parental identity and the idealized baby and family. In this study, the authors performed a narrative review of the literature regarding the phenomenon of grief following reproductive loss in bereaved parents, focusing on heteronormative mothers and fathers and on nontraditional families. One of the main highlighted a…
