[18F-FDG PET/CT diagnosis of liver cyst infection in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and fever of unknown origin].

The diagnosis, localization and treatment of infected cysts in the kidney or liver of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) remain a clinical challenge. We report the findings of (18)F-FDG PET-CT in an ADPKD diagnosed patient who required renal transplantation five years before and in his follow up presented repeated episodes of bacteriemia without known focus on radiological tests performed. The (18)F-FDG PET-CT scan showed numerous hypermetabolic images with focal or ring-shaped morphology related to the content and the wall of some hepatic cysts. The increased m

Metabolic and functional connectivity changes in mal de debarquement syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS) experience a chronic illusion of self-motion triggered by prolonged exposure to passive motion, such as from sea or air travel. The experience is one of rocking dizziness similar to when the individual was originally on the motion trigger such as a boat or airplane. MdDS represents a prolonged version of a normal phenomenon familiar to most individuals but which persists for months or years in others. It represents a natural example of the neuroplasticity of motion adaptation. However, the localization of where that motion adapta

Regional expansion of hypometabolism in Alzheimer's disease follows amyloid deposition with temporal delay.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional imaging studies suggest that patterns of hypometabolism (measured by [(18)F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography [FDG-PET]) and amyloid deposition (measured by [(11)C] Pittsburgh Compound B [PiB]- PET) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) show some overlap with each other. This indicates that neuronal dysfunction might spread within the anatomical pattern of amyloid deposition. The aim of this study was to examine longitudinal regional patterns of amyloid deposition and hypometabolism in the same population of mild AD subjects and to establish their regional rela

Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography may predict the outcome in patients with asymptomatic mild stenosis of internal carotid artery--case report.

A 47-year-old male presented with asymptomatic mild (45%) internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis associated with familial hypercholesterolemia. Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose ([(18)F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) showed that the carotid plaque had high uptake of [(18)F]FDG on the initial scan. He was treated with antiplatelet agent, but subsequently developed retinal artery occlusion on the ipsilateral side. The patient safely underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Histological examination revealed that the plaque was rich in lipids and activated macrophages. Previous large randomiz

High FDG uptake on FDG-PET scan in HIV-1 infected patient with advanced disease.

UNLABELLED: We report the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian male positive for HIV-1 who was admitted in our clinic for a fever of unknown origin with weight loss. The CD4 cell count was 99/mm3 and the viral load (VL) was 836500 copies/ml. A first FDG-PET-CT showed abnormal hypermetabolism of multiple lymp nodes, of the bone marrow and of the spleen. Tuberculosis and lymphoma were excluded by a lymph node biopsy and a culture. Six months after the start of a highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) containing lamuvidine, tenofovir, atazanavir boosted by ritonavir, a new FDG-PET-CT showed a c

Should possible recurrence of disease contraindicate liver transplantation in patients with end-stage alveolar echinococcosis? A 20-year follow-up study.

Liver transplantation (LT) is currently contraindicated in patients with residual or metastatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) lesions. We evaluated the long-term course of such patients who underwent LT and were subsequently treated with benzimidazoles. Clinical, imaging, serological, and therapeutic data were collected from 5 patients with residual/recurrent AE lesions who survived for more than 15 years. Since 2004, [(18) F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) images were available, and the levels of serum antibodies (Abs) against Echinococcus multilocularis-recom

(18)F-FDG PET/MRI can be used to identify injured peripheral nerves in a model of neuropathic pain.

UNLABELLED: We demonstrated increased (18)F-FDG uptake in injured peripheral nerves in a model of neuropathic pain using small-animal PET/MRI. METHODS: A neuropathic pain model in rats was created by spared-nerve injury of the left sciatic nerve. Sham-operated rats without nerve injury were used as a control. The presence of pain was confirmed by testing for allodynia. Sequential small-animal (18)F-FDG PET and MRI scans of the thighs were obtained and coregistered. Autoradiography was performed on harvested nerves and muscle. RESULTS: The group with spared-nerve injury showed the development

Estimation of regional bone metabolism from whole-body 18F-fluoride PET static images.

PURPOSE: We evaluate a new quantitative method of acquiring and analysing (18)F positron emission tomography (PET) studies that enables regional bone plasma clearance (K ( i )) to be estimated from static scans acquired at multiple sites in the skeleton following a single injection of tracer. METHODS: Dynamic lumbar spine (18)F PET data from two clinical trials were used to simulate a series of static scans acquired 30-60 min after injection. Venous blood samples were taken at 30, 40, 50 and 60 min and K ( i ) evaluated by Patlak analysis and the static scan method. The data were used to eval

Huntington's disease-like and ataxia syndromes: identification of a family with a de novo SCA17/TBP mutation.

The autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias, commonly referred to as SCAs, are clinically and genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorders. Twenty-eight genetic subtypes have been identified, of which 7 are caused by expansion of a CAG trinucleotide repeat that encodes a polyglutamine tract in the respective proteins. SCA17 is caused by a CAG/CAA repeat expansion in the TATA box-binding protein-gene (TBP). In some cases the clinical phenotype of SCA17 overlaps that of Huntington's disease (HD), hence the use of the term Huntington's disease-like. We screened 89 patients with a Hunt

A mouse model characterizing features of vascular dementia with hippocampal atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We have previously described effects of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion in mice with bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) using microcoils for 30 days. These mice specifically exhibit working memory deficits attributable to frontal-subcortical circuit damage without apparent gray matter changes, indicating similarities with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia. However, as subcortical ischemic vascular dementia progresses over time, the longer-term effects that characterize the mouse model are not known. METHODS: Comprehensive behavioral test batteries and
