Morphological and evolutionary insights into the keystone element of the human foot's medial longitudinal arch.

The evolution of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) is one of the most impactful adaptations in the hominin foot that emerged with bipedalism. When and how it evolved in the human lineage is still unresolved. Complicating the issue, clinical definitions of flatfoot in living Homo sapiens have not reached a consensus. Here we digitally investigate the navicular morphology of H. sapiens (living, archaeological, and fossil), great apes, and fossil hominins and its correlation with the MLA. A distinctive navicular shape characterises living H. sapiens with adult acquired flexible flatfoot, while t…

The short-term prognosis of diabetic foot ulceration is independent of nutritional status at admission.

Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the complications of diabetes. Malnutrition is one of the risk factors for wounds but, on the other hand, diabetic foot ulceration may promote malnutrition. In this single-centre retrospective study we evaluated the frequency of malnutrition at first admission and the severity of foot ulceration. We demonstrated that malnutrition at admission correlated with duration of hospitalisation and with death rate rather than with the risk of amputation. Our data challenged the concept that protein-energy deficiency may worsen the prognosis of diabetic foot ulcers. Never…

Case report: The dot in circle sign: A pathognomonic MRI sign of Madura foot.

Mycetoma or Madura's foot is a rare condition in Morocco. It is a chronic infection that affects deep subcutaneous tissues and may eventually spread to deep tissues, muscles, and bones. It is caused by fungi or bacteria and most often affects the foot. Biopsy and microbiological examination help to establish a definitive diagnosis, but may delay it. Imaging plays a crucial role in early diagnosis, particularly MRI findings that show a pathognomonic sign of mycetoma which is the dot-in-the-circle sign. Computed tomography provides a better analysis of bone changes than plain radiography. Treatm…

Influence of social and meteorological factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Sichuan Province.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by a variety of enteroviruses remains a major public health problem in China. Previous studies have found that social factors may contribute to the inconsistency of the relationship patterns between meteorological factors and HFMD, but the conclusions are inconsistent. The influence of social factors on the association between meteorology and HFMD is still less well understood. We aimed to analyze whether social factors affected the effect of meteorological factors on HFMD in Sichuan Province. METHOD: We collected daily data on HFMD, mete…

Potential relevance of salivary legumain for the clinical diagnostic of hand, foot, and mouth disease.

The fight against hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) remains an arduous challenge without existing point-of-care (POC) diagnostic platforms for accurate diagnosis and prompt case quarantine. Hence, the purpose of this salivary biomarker discovery study is to set the fundamentals for the realization of POC diagnostics for HFMD. Whole salivary proteome profiling was performed on the saliva obtained from children with HFMD and healthy children, using a reductive dimethylation chemical labeling method coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics technology. We ide…

Analysis of a SARIMA-XGBoost model for hand, foot, and mouth disease in Xinjiang, China.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infectious disease. The incidence of HFMD has a pronounced seasonal tendency and is closely related to meteorological factors such as temperature, rainfall, and wind speed. In this paper, we propose a combined SARIMA-XGBoost model to improve the prediction accuracy of HFMD in 15 regions of Xinjiang, China. The SARIMA model is used for seasonal trends, and the XGBoost algorithm is applied for the nonlinear effects of meteorological factors. The geographical and temporal weighted regression model is designed to analyze the influence of m…

The effects of electrical stimulation on diabetic ulcers of foot and lower limb: A systematic review.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a life-threatening condition affecting a third of diabetic patients. Many adjuvant therapies aimed at improving the healing rate (HR) and accelerating healing time are currently under investigation. Electrical stimulation (ES) is a physical-based therapy able to increase cells activity and migration into wound bed as well as inhibiting bacterial activity. The aim of this paper was to collect and analyse findings on the effects of ES used in combination with standard wound care (SWC) in the treatment of diabetic foot ulceration compared with SWC alone. A systematic …

The Construction and Analysis of Infiltrating Immune Cell and ceRNA Networks in Diabetic Foot Ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a severe complication characterized by low-grade infectious inflammation and probably associated with specific competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) and infiltrating immune cells. Nonetheless, no reliable biomarkers are used for detecting infectious inflammation in DFU. Therefore, it is essential to explore potential biomarkers for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of DFU. METHODS: The gene expression profile was retrieved from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and divided into two groups, namely, standard samples and DFU samples. To establish t…

Fibronectin in hyperglycaemia and its potential use in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers: A review.

Metabolism of fibronectin, the protein that plays a key role in the healing of wounds, is changed in the patients with diabetes mellitus. Fibronectin can interact with other proteins and proteoglycans and organise them to form the extracellular matrix, the basis of the granulation tissue in healing wounds. However, diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) suffer from inadequate deposition of this protein. Degradation prevails over fibronectin synthesis in the proteolytic inflammatory environment in the ulcers. Because of the lack of fibronectin in the wound bed, the assembly of the extracellular matrix and…
