Addressing Food Insecurity through a Health Equity Lens: a Case Study of Large Urban School Districts during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Reduced access to school meals during public health emergencies can accelerate food insecurity and nutritional status, particularly for low-income children in urban areas. To prevent the exacerbation of health disparities, there is a need to understand the implementation of meal distribution among large urban school districts during emergencies and to what degree these strategies provide equitable meal access. Our case study of four large urban school districts during the COVID-19 pandemic aims to address these knowledge gaps. Guided by the Getting to Equity (GTE) framework, we conducted a mix

Socioeconomic position and prediagnostic health care contacts in children with cancer in Denmark: a nationwide register study.

BACKGROUND: While underlying mechanisms and pathways of social inequalities in cancer survival have been extensively examined in adults, this is less so for children with cancer. Hypothesized mechanisms include prediagnostic utilization of and navigation through the health care system, which may differ by socioeconomic resources of the families. In this nationwide register-based study we investigated the association between measures of family socioeconomic position in relation to prediagnostic health care contacts and stage of disease at diagnosis in children with cancer in Denmark. METHODS:

Rural vs Urban Outcomes in Total Knee and Hip Arthroplasty: A Study of Patient-Reported Outcomes and Web-Based Tool Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Rural patients in the United States often face higher tobacco use, obesity rates, and lower health literacy, impacting arthroplasty outcomes. This study investigates whether rural residency is directly associated with poorer patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following total knee (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). It also evaluates the effectiveness of web-based PRO tools across urban and rural populations. Understanding these relationships is crucial for addressing disparities in care and improving surveillance for rural populations. METHODS: From May 2021 to April 2023, TKA a

Curriculum Resources for Integrating Respectful Maternity Care Into Health Professions Education: A Rapid Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Respectful maternity care (RMC) ensures that every childbearing woman is treated with dignity, safety, and respect. Health care professionals play a critical role in RMC but can also contribute to disrespectful and abusive practices, inflicting lasting trauma. Educating pre-service health care learners is one promising strategy for change. As part of our larger Mothering and Albinism research project, we sought timely evidence to develop educational resources supporting RMC for people impacted by albinism. METHODS: Our international team conducted a rapid scoping review to answe

The Epidemiology of Working Life: Reorganizing Occupational Health Science Around Work-Structured Exposure Systems.

Occupational epidemiology has played a central role in identifying workplace hazards and informing prevention. However, its focus on discrete exposures, bounded worksites, and linear models is insufficient to capture how contemporary work shapes health. Many risks arise not from isolated hazards, but from cumulative, interacting exposures generated by work organization that extend beyond the workplace and accumulate across working life. This paper proposes the Epidemiology of Working Life (EWL) as a framework for reorganizing occupational health science. Anchored in the working-life-exposome,

An assessment of the operationality and factors influencing the effectiveness of rabies surveillance in Gombe State, Nigeria.

Rabies remains a burden in Africa, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable despite the availability of effective vaccines. Nigeria, the most populous African country, needs rapid disease control actions and commitments to achieve the goal of eliminating dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Surveillance is an essential element of effective disease control strategies. This study examined the current state of operationality of the rabies surveillance system for early case detection and management in Gombe state, Nigeria, through a One Health lens. It further examined the barriers impeding the ef

Barriers to cancer treatment and care for people experiencing structural vulnerability: a secondary analysis of ethnographic data.

BACKGROUND: A key pillar of Canada's healthcare system is universal access, yet significant barriers to cancer services remain for people impacted by structural vulnerability (e.g., poverty, homelessness, racism). For this reason, cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, resulting in worse patient outcomes, a reduced quality of life, and at a higher cost to the healthcare system. Those who face significant barriers to access are under-represented in cancer control services Consequently, these inequities result in people dying from cancers that are highly treatable and preventable, however; little

Comparing Reasons for Starting and Stopping Methadone, Buprenorphine, and Naltrexone Treatment Among a Sample of White Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Despite their efficacy, medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are underutilized in the United States. Nonetheless, few studies have explored reasons why individuals choose to start MOUD or discontinue MOUD after starting, especially extended-release naltrexone. We sought to identify reasons why individuals start and stop MOUD, including the differences between starting and stopping the 3 most common formulations: methadone, sublingual buprenorphine, and extended-release naltrexone. METHODS: We conducted 31 semistructured interviews over the phone with a sample of white indivi

The communication of the radiation risk from CT in relation to its clinical benefit in the era of personalized medicine: part 2: benefits versus risk of CT.

In order to personalize the communication of the CT risk, we need to describe the risk in the context of the clinical benefit of CT, which will generally be much higher, provided a CT scan has a well-established clinical indication. However as pediatric radiologists we should be careful not to overstate the benefit of CT, being aware that medico-legal pressures and the realities of health care economics have led to overutilization of the technology. And even though we should not use previously accumulated radiation dose to a child as an argument against conducting a clinically indicated scan (

Innovations in Big Data and Omics Towards Phenome-Wide and Genome-Wide Association Studies for Retinal Disease.

The human retina is a multilayered tissue with diverse embryological origins and is, therefore, a window for assessment of ocular, neurological, vascular, and other systemic conditions. Innovations in big data, particularly involving large population biobanks, have enabled improved data sets that facilitate a better understanding of connections between the retina and systemic health. Retinal fundus and optical coherence tomography imaging data provide rich resources for describing interpretable imaging endophenotypes and evaluating their utility as biomarkers for future ocular and systemic con
