Collaborative approaches with stakeholders in speech-language pathology: Narrative literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Collaborative approaches in speech-language pathology (SLP) aim to integrate the experience of clients and people important to them by including these stakeholders actively in decision making. This inclusion can lead to more effective, engaging, and safer SLP practice. A variety of collaborative approaches have evolved in response to sociocultural contexts, and as a result, there are many different approaches currently in use such as co-design, co-production, and co-creation. However, despite widening acceptance and utilisation of collaborative approaches, the use and evidence fo

Outcomes of a first point of contact speech language therapy clinic for patients requiring vocal cord check pre and post thyroid/parathyroid surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Speech Language Therapy First Point of Contact Clinic (SLT-FPOCC) models can assist assessment of low-risk patient populations referred to ear, nose and throat (ENT) services. To further improve ENT waitlist management and compliance with best-practice care, consideration of other low-risk populations that could be safely managed through this service model is needed. The aims of this paper are to evaluate the clinical and service outcomes of completing vocal cord check (VCC) assessments for patients' pre and post thyroid/parathyroid surgery within an SLT-FPOCC model and examine c

Oral ibandronic acid versus intravenous zoledronic acid in treatment of bone metastases from breast cancer: a randomised, open label, non-inferiority phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates are routinely used in the treatment of metastatic bone disease from breast cancer to reduce pain and bone destruction. Zoledronic acid given by intravenous infusion has been widely used, but places a substantial logistical burden on both patient and hospital. As a result, the use of oral ibandronic acid has increased, despite the absence of comparative data. In the ZICE trial, we compared oral ibandronic acid with intravenous zoledronic acid for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer to bone. METHODS: This phase 3, open-label, parallel group active-controlled, m

Shifting competing underlying causes of death among U.S. decedents with diabetes recorded as a non-underlying cause, 1999-2024.

OBJECTIVE: To examine U.S. trends and underlying-cause patterns among deaths with diabetes recorded as a non-underlying cause (DM-nonUCD). METHODS: We used CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data from 1999 to 2024. DM-nonUCD was defined as deaths with ICD-10 codes E10-E14 in multiple-cause fields, excluding deaths with diabetes as the underlying cause. Analyses were performed overall and for type 1 diabetes (E10) and type 2 diabetes (E11). Death counts, age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs), and Joinpoint trends were assessed. RESULTS: DM-nonUCD occurred in 4,794,136 deaths and increased from

Treatment patterns of oral corticosteroid and nonsteroidal immunosuppressant therapy and clinical outcomes in US patients receiving ravulizumab or eculizumab for generalized myasthenia gravis.

A growing body of evidence supports a meaningful immunosuppressive therapy (IST)-sparing role for the complement component 5 inhibition therapies (C5ITs) ravulizumab and eculizumab in the treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). However, a comprehensive understanding of long-term concomitant IST use patterns and clinical outcomes among patients receiving these C5ITs is needed. This retrospective cohort study assessed oral corticosteroid use, nonsteroidal immunosuppressant therapy (NSIST) use, and clinical outcomes among US adults with gMG (identified from January 2015 to March 2024) v

Experiences of implementation of personalised risk estimates for breast cancer in clinical practice: a systematic review and qualitative synthesis.

Breast cancer risk prediction tools are increasingly used in clinical practice to guide early detection, prevention, and shared decision-making. Unlike population-level screening, personalised risk estimates incorporate individual factors (family history, genetics, lifestyle, breast density), providing tailored assessments. These tools show promise for improving patient engagement and targeted prevention, but require effective implementation to ensure they enhance rather than complicate care. This review explores healthcare professionals' experiences with providing personalised breast cancer r

Stages of objective memory impairment are associated with accelerated brain aging.

Reliable staging of early memory decline is essential for identifying individuals at risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The Stages of Objective Memory Impairment (SOMI) framework provides a clinically scalable tool for characterizing episodic memory loss, yet its neurobiological validity remains underexplored. Recent advances in plasma biomarkers (e.g., p-tau217, p-tau181, Aβ42/40) offer emerging blood-based alternatives to CSF and PET, although their diagnostic implementation continues to evolve. Here, we examine whether SOMI stages reflect widespread brain aging, as indexed by BrainAGE, a structu

Morning versus afternoon administration of immune checkpoint inhibitors in metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Circadian biology suggests that synchronizing immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) dosing with morning peaks in immune activation could improve clinical outcomes, but well-powered studies using appropriate causal inference methodology are sparse. METHODS: We emulated a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of AM versus PM ICI infusions using Veterans Health Administration records from 2010 to 2024. In the emulated trial, stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer patients planned to undergo first-line or second-line ICI would have been randomized to receive the first three infusions in the

Plant-based diets: Not always a free choice for rural adults.

Supporting population-level dietary transitions to plant-based diets (PBDs) for human and environmental health demands a comprehensive understanding of lived experience and human behavior. This study examined how diverse identities shape PBD behavior. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Intersectionality, we implemented multi-group structural equation models with a national sample of US rural adults (n = 1908) to predict adherence to a PBD. In the main model, attitude (β = 1.117, p < 0.001) was the only predictor of intention to consume a PBD. Intention (β=0.630, p < 0.001) and perc

Disparity Considerations in an Alternative Eligibility Criterion for Medicare Medication Therapy Management Programs With Machine Learning.

OBJECTIVES: Current eligibility criteria for Medicare Medication Therapy Management (MTM) programs may disadvantage racial and ethnic minorities. As health plans increasingly apply predictive modeling to guide MTM eligibility, these tools risk perpetuating existing disparities. This study examined whether hospitalization and emergency room (ER) costs could serve as an alternative eligibility criterion to improve minority representation in MTM enrollment and whether machine learning models reflect racial and ethnic differences. METHODS: A 10% random sample of fee-for-service Medicare beneficia

Electronic Patient-Reported Health-Related Quality of Life Trajectories in ICU Survivors: A Multicentre Pilot Study-Within-a-Trial Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patient-important outcomes beyond mortality, particularly health-related quality of life (HRQoL), are frequently used in intensive care unit (ICU) trials. However, HRQoL assessment remains challenging due to methodological complexities, including poorly defined recovery trajectories, lack of consensus on measurement instruments, complexity of statistical analysis, and missing data. Electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) may improve data collection and efficiency, though their feasibility in ICU survivors is uncertain. METHODS: This protocol outlines a longitudinal, multicent

Black Youth and Caregiver Experiences of Racism in Pain Management: A Narrative Inquiry.

PURPOSE: Black communities face high rates of unmanaged pain due to anti-Black racism in the healthcare system. However, a gap currently exists in the understanding of how anti-Black racism impacts pain management conversations (ie where a pain management plan is discussed with a healthcare professional) with youth in Canada. The purpose of this study was to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of anti-Black racism in a group of Black youth and their caregivers who had pain management conversations with healthcare professionals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A qualitative narrative inquiry st

Building evidence on digital psychotherapies for adults living with depression: a systematic scoping review of populations, interventions and design features of ongoing and planned randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Digital psychotherapies may offer scalable options for depression, but most randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are at moderate or high risk of bias. Mapping the methodologies, populations, interventions and outcomes of completed, ongoing and terminated/withdrawn RCTs of digital psychotherapies for depression could help anticipate future evidence gaps and redundancies. STUDY SELECTION AND ANALYSIS: We conducted a systematic scoping review of RCTs registered in the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, ClinicalTrials.gov, European Union Clinical Trials Register and E
