Outcomes of Patients with Hematological Malignancies Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at a Tertiary Care Center in Saudi Arabia.

BackgroundPatients with hematological malignancies (HM) are at risk for complications, including neutropenia and admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (GCSF) can accelerate progenitor cells' proliferation and differentiation, and thus compensate for neutropenia. In patients with HM admitted to ICUs in Saudi Arabia, the outcome and impact of GCSF use on neutropenia duration and severity is understudied.ObjectiveTo evaluate the outcome and impact of GCSF on neutropenia in patients with HM admitted to the ICU of a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia.M

Higher mortality risk from gynaecological neoplasms and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: an observational study from the Spanish National Registry.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the different types of neoplasms and lineages on mortality of patients with SLE. METHODS: Retrospective and observational comparison of the neoplasm-related deaths in patients with SLE and the general Spanish population reported in the Spanish Hospital Discharge Database. To determine the impact of SLE on the risk of dying from each neoplasm lineage, a binary logistic regression considering age, female sex, tobacco and alcohol consumption, was performed. RESULTS: During 2016-2019, 139 531 in-hospital deaths from neoplasms were certified in Spain (91 in pa

Growth differentiation factor-15 may be a novel biomarker in pancreatic cancer: A review.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant and invasive gastrointestinal tumor that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage with a poor prognosis and high mortality. Currently, carbohydrate antigen199(CA199) is the only biomarker approved by the FDA for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, but it has great limitations. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is expected to be a novel biomarker for the diagnosis, efficacy prediction, and prognosis assessment of pancreatic cancer patients. In this paper, we searched the keywords GDF-15, macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1), CA199, pancreatic c

Pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of malnutrition in hematologic malignancies: a comprehensive review.

Hematologic malignancies are frequently complicated by malnutrition, a condition that remains underrecognized yet strongly associated with impaired treatment tolerance, immune recovery, and survival. Unlike solid tumors, hematologic malignancies are characterized by diffuse marrow and immune system involvement, rendering host metabolism highly vulnerable to tumor-driven inflammation and therapy-induced immune stress. Accumulating evidence indicates that nutritional deterioration in hematologic malignancies reflects a state of integrated immunometabolic vulnerability-driven by hyperinflammation

Exploring the Molecular Adaptations, Benefits, and Future Direction of Exercise Training: Updated Insights into Cardiovascular Health.

This review emphasizes the globally accepted physical activity guidelines and explores the various molecular adaptations that occur with continuous exercise. It is essential to highlight the critical roles of cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, and muscle mass in reducing mortality and enhancing quality of life. It has been shown in various studies that there are certainly substantial reductions in cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among individuals with high cardiorespiratory fitness levels. Resistance training is also examined, which, likewise, reveals significant mortality be

Treatment of relapsed or refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma with lenalidomide combined with PD-1 monoclonal antibody: a case report and literature review.

The current standard treatment for relapsed or refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma involves salvage chemotherapy followed by high-dose chemotherapy and sequential autologous stem cell transplantation. However, for patients who cannot tolerate intense chemotherapy or do not meet the conditions for autologous stem cell transplantation, there is a need to explore new treatment options. We report a case of an elderly patient with multiple relapses of classical Hodgkin's lymphoma who experienced repeated disease progression despite undergoing multiple lines of treatment including novel agents such as CD3

Upregulation of CD19 by low-dose chidamide promotes CAR T cells functionality in B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) is a highly heterogeneous group of lymphopoietic malignancies that account for 85% to 90% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. In recent years, CD19 Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T) cell immunotherapy has significantly improved the cure rate of B-NHL patients, but there are still some patients who cannot achieve remission after treatment, or relapse after remission. Therefore, it is of great importance to overcome the drug resistance of CD19 CAR T cells after B-NHL treatment and reduce the recurrence rate of CD19 CAR T cells after B-NHL treatment. We found that

HIV and neoplasms: What do we know so far?

IntroductionThe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic remains an important issue. In 2020, approximately 37.7 million people were living with the disease and there were more than 680 thousand deaths due to complications linked to the disease. Despite these exorbitant numbers, the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy has marked a new era, changing the epidemiological profile of the infection and related pathologies, including neoplasms.ObjectiveWe performed a literature review to assess the role of neoplasms in patients with HIV after the introduction of antiretroviral the

Risk assessment and prevention of cancer-associated venous thromboembolism in ambulatory patients with solid malignancies.

Venous thromboembolism remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among ambulatory cancer patients, necessitating effective risk assessment and prevention strategies. Despite the availability of risk assessment models and guidelines recommending primary thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparins or direct oral anticoagulants, the application of these strategies is inconsistent. This review provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art venous thromboembolism risk assessment and thromboprophylaxis in ambulatory patients with cancer, focusing on existing risk assessment mo
