Neurophysiological evidence for emotion regulation abnormalities in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis.

Past studies indicate that individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR) display emotion regulation abnormalities that predict increased symptom severity and poor functional outcome. However, it is unclear which neurophysiological processes contribute to impairments in implementing various strategies to down-regulate negative emotion. The current study used electroencephalography (EEG) to determine whether individuals at CHR have difficulty implementing reappraisal and distraction. Participants included individuals at CHR (n = 25) and healthy controls (CN: n = 36) who completed an EEG

Apolipoprotein E abundance is elevated in the brains of individuals with Down syndrome-Alzheimer's disease.

Trisomy of chromosome 21, the cause of Down syndrome (DS), is the most commonly occurring genetic cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we compare the frontal cortex proteome of people with Down syndrome-Alzheimer's disease (DSAD) to demographically matched cases of early onset AD and healthy ageing controls. We find dysregulation of the proteome, beyond proteins encoded by chromosome 21, including an increase in the abundance of the key AD-associated protein, APOE, in people with DSAD compared to matched cases of AD. To understand the cell types that may contribute to changes in protein ab

Novel method for detection of UBE3A protein in CSF from individuals with Angelman syndrome.

Loss of production of ubiquitin protein ligase E3A (UBE3A) in neurons leads to Angelman Syndrome (AS). There are limited methods to reliably measure UBE3A in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which negatively impacts therapeutic development. To overcome this gap, we developed and analytically validated a novel method for CSF UBE3A quantitation, which includes an immunoprecipitation protein capture step followed by tryptic digestion and high-resolution mass spectrometry detection of a unique UBE3A peptide. Our data suggest that we can reliably detect UBE3A at concentrations as low as 2.5 pg/mL. The as

Impact of Individual Culprit Coronary Arteries Revascularized by Primary PCI on Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Studies on outcomes of primary PCI have shown that among patients with STEMI, complete revascularization had better outcomes than culprit vessel PCI alone. AIMS: Data on individual coronary artery PCI is rare. We wanted to see if individual coronary artery PCI had effect on outcomes. RESULTS: Patients who did not undergo PCI had worst outcomes in terms of mortality and cardiogenic shock. LAD interventions had best outcomes with lesser complication rates. OM interventions had the best safety profile. LCX interventions had more incidence of complications and mortality as compared t

Immediate impact of whole-body vibration on backward walking in individuals with Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson Disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that can affect gait and balance. For individuals with PD, difficulty with posterior movement patterns often increases their risk of falls. This often further reduces their mobility due to fear of falling. PURPOSE: Determine the immediate impact of performing partial squats using whole-body vibration (WBV) versus level surface on backward walking velocity in individuals with PD. METHODS: Twenty-six individuals with PD (Hoehn & Yahr I-IV, median age = 68.3, 13 females) participated in one session of squats on either WBV

Evidence-based criteria for identifying at-risk individuals requiring liver disease screening.

BACKGROUND: Liver fibrosis screening is recommended in at-risk groups, but a clear definition of "at risk" for entry criteria is lacking. We analyzed different combinations of established risk factors to define specific screening entry criteria with a prespecified sensitivity requirement. METHODS: Data regarding individuals aged 40-70 years from Finnish health-examination surveys (FINRISK 2002-2012 and Health 2000, n=15,057) and the UK Biobank (n=454,990) were linked with healthcare registries for liver cirrhosis-related events (LREs; liver-related hospitalizations, cancer, or death). Plasma p-tau217 as a biomarker of Alzheimer's disease pathology in individuals with Down syndrome.

Diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) in adults with Down syndrome (DS), a population with a high genetically determined risk of AD, remains challenging. In this large observational study including n = 2329 samples from the Down Alzheimer Barcelona Neuroimaging Initiative (DABNI) and euploid controls from the Sant Pau Initiative on Neurodegeneration (SPIN) with and without symptomatic AD, we investigate if the strong diagnostic performance of plasma p-tau217 observed in sporadic AD extends to the DS population. Plasma p-tau217 discriminated cognitively stable individuals with DS from those with

Synthesis and characterization of individual high-entropy alloy particles for electrocatalytic water oxidation.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted considerable attention as promising catalysts. Despite a rapidly growing number of publications in this area, characterization of HEA electrocatalytic activity and stability remains challenging. In this paper, we report rapid and scalable microwave-shock assisted synthesis of FeCoNiCuMnCr HEA and its characterization at a single particle level. HEA particles synthesized on HOPG without additional reagents or pre-/post-treatments exhibited a significant activity toward water oxidation in 0.1 M NaOH. Individual micrometer-sized FeCoNiCuMnCr HEA particles

Gut microbiome differences and disease risk in colorectal cancer relatives and healthy individuals.

Given the heightened focus on high-risk populations, this study aimed to provide insights into early susceptibility and preventive strategies for colorectal cancer (CRC) by focusing on high-risk populations. In this research, fecal samples from 1,647 individuals across three discovery cohorts and nine external validation cohorts were sequenced using whole-genome metagenomic sequencing. A prediction model based on random forest was constructed using the nine external cohorts and independently validated with the three discovery cohorts. A disease probability (POD) model based on microbial biomar

Obesity Associated With Symptomatic Remission in Clozapine-Treated Individuals With Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine, indicated for use in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), comes with notable weight gain and metabolic side effects. Prior studies have suggested a link between weight gain and antipsychotic efficacy in schizophrenia. In this study, we seek to explore the relationship between obesity and clinical outcome in TRS on clozapine treatment. METHODS: This study was conducted at a tertiary mental health institution on patients with TRS on clozapine for at least 12 weeks. Data were collected through a research interview and review of medical records. Symptoms were assessed o

The systemic and kidney hemodynamic response to empagliflozin, losartan and their combination varies between individuals.

BACKGROUND: Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) and sodium glucose cotransporter inhibitors (SGLT2i) are known for their kidney protective properties, but both show significant residual risk in large outcome trials. In these trials, SGLT2i were introduced on top of RASi; the individual response to each drug is currently unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate the individual reactions to the angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) losartan and the SGLT2i empagliflozin and their combination on measured GFR (mGFR) and systolic blood pressure (SBP). METHODS: In this double-blind, randomiz

Measuring economic burden in families of individuals with Angelman Syndrome in Poland: a caregivers' survey.

BACKGROUND: Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder characterized by severe intellectual disability, seizures, and motor and speech impairments, requiring lifelong, intensive care. Although caregivers of individuals with AS often face reduced quality of life and substantial emotional and financial strain, little is known about the cost-of-illness in Poland. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study in collaboration with the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics Poland (FAST Poland). An anonymous web-based survey was completed by 85 parents of individuals

Design and development of a novel device to identify the individual concentration of NO and NO2 in a gas mixture.

This study investigates the performance of advanced potentiometric sensors utilizing yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates coated with lanthanum copper oxide (La2CuO4) or tungsten oxide (WO3) for the selective detection of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2). The sensors were systematically evaluated at operating temperatures of 550, 600, and 650 °C. The results indicate that sensitivity to NO2 significantly increases at higher temperatures, while the response to NO is more pronounced at lower temperatures. This behavior is attributed to the catalytic conversion of NO to NO2 and vice versa, enh

Cause of head injury and between- and within-individual changes in impulsivity and binge drinking.

BACKGROUND: Head injury (HI) is a serious public health concern related to a wide range of medical and neurobehavioral consequences, including the worsening of adolescent psychopathology and unhealthy substance use. Little is known, however, about whether causes of HI are uniquely related to between-individual differences in impulsivity and binge drinking during emerging adulthood - a life-course period characterized by risk taking behavior and substance use experimentation. METHODS: Data from an ethnically diverse longitudinal sample of Texas youth (N = 741) are analyzed to evaluate the asso

Individual-level deviations from normative brain morphology in violence, psychosis, and psychopathy.

Neuroimaging research has shown brain morphological abnormalities associated with violence and psychosis, but individual differences are substantial and results not consistent across studies. Normative modeling of brain MRI-features facilitates a systematic mapping of individual brain characteristics of complex phenotypes also in small samples but has not yet been applied to forensic psychiatry populations. We explored brain heterogeneity in persons with a history of severe violence with a comorbid schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD-V; n = 38), non-violent persons with schizophrenia spectrum
