Clinical and psychological correlates of somatic symptoms in patients on dialysis.

Somatic symptoms are common in patients on dialysis. Their causes are largely unknown and their therapy is unsatisfactory. To examine the relationship of psychological and clinical factors to these symptoms, 191 interviews were done in patients on hemo- and peritoneal dialysis. The severity of 8 somatic symptoms (tiredness, sleep disturbance, cramps, pruritus, headache, nausea, dyspnea, joint pain) of importance in dialysis patients was measured using previously validated scales. Indices of affect and quality of life were obtained, as was demographic, clinical and laboratory information. The s

Pattern-analytic approach to analysis of accidents due to human error: an application of the ortho-oblique-type binary data decomposition.

An ortho-oblique-type binary data decomposition based on data matrices providing relevant conditions of accidents is proposed as a means of classifying patterns of human error, and the computing procedures are described. The usefulness of the technique is shown by a numerical example of accidents in freight-car classification yard work. Forty-two severely injured victims were interviewed by psychologists and the contents of case reports were rearranged into a reliable binary data matrix which indicated the presence or absence of an interrelationship between each sample and each of 42 items of

The Role of Socio-demographics in Adoption of Religious-Spiritual and Other Coping Strategies Among Muslim Chronic Patients with Hepatitis C in Pakistan.

Coping has emerged as a vital indicator among patients in the chronic conditions. The current study examined the role of demographic characteristics (such as age, education, gender, marital status, residential background, family type and number of children) in adoption of coping (emotion-focused, problem-solving, religious-spiritual) strategies for nursing among hepatitis patients. A sample of 500 patients (of hepatitis C) was drawn from five most populous districts (Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Multan) of Punjab, Pakistan, by using Epi Info software with an alpha level of 0.

What parents think and feel about deep brain stimulation in paediatric secondary dystonia including cerebral palsy: A qualitative study of parental decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is characterised by involuntary movements and postures. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is effective in reducing dystonic symptoms in primary dystonia in childhood and to lesser extent in secondary dystonia. How families and children decide to choose DBS surgery has never been explored. AIMS: To explore parental decision-making for DBS in paediatric secondary dystonia. METHODS: Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews with eight parents of children with secondary dystonia who had undergone DBS. Interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysi

Parental bonding and personality characteristics of first episode intention to suicide or deliberate self-harm without a history of mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial overlap between deliberate self-harm (DSH) and intention to suicide (ITS), although the psychopathologies and motivations behind these behaviors are distinctly different. The purpose of this study was to investigate (i) the pathway relationship among parental bonding, personality characteristics, and alexithymic traits, and (ii) the association of these features with ITS and DSH using structural equation modeling to determine the risks and protective factors for these behaviors. METHODS: Sixty-nine first-time DSH and 36 first-time ITS patients without medical

Autism spectrum disorder and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Part II: a qualitative comparison of parenting stress.

BACKGROUND: Researchers investigating the impact of parenting children with disabilities suggest that regardless of the specific diagnosis, parents experience increased levels of stress. However, particular disabilities may be associated with distinct stressors and strains. METHOD: Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and parents of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) participated in in-depth qualitative interviews employing a basic interpretative approach. RESULTS: Both groups described some similar stressors, such as multi-tasking, the diagnostic process

A clinical investigation of motivation to change standards and cognitions about failure in perfectionism.

BACKGROUND: Clinical perfectionism is a transdiagnostic process that has been found to maintain eating disorders, anxiety disorders and depression. Cognitive behavioural models explaining the maintenance of clinical perfectionism emphasize the contribution of dichotomous thinking and resetting standards higher following both success and failure in meeting their goals. There has been a paucity of research examining the predictions of the models and motivation to change perfectionism. Motivation to change is important as individuals with clinical perfectionism often report many perceived benefit

The role of intrusive and other recent life events on symptomatology in relapses of schizophrenia: a community nursing investigation.

This study aimed to identify the impact of life events on psychotic relapse in individuals with an established diagnosis of schizophrenia to explore their proneness to experience life events, to examine if any effect of life events was cumulative or triggering in nature and to explore if specific types of events influence subsequent symptom formation. An association between adverse life events and relapse in people with schizophrenia has been reported in several studies; however, the nature of the association remains unclear. Some studies suggest that intrusive events promote the formation of

Parents' perceptions of disclosure of the diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

The aim of the paper is to propose guidelines for good practice in disclosing the diagnosis of cerebral palsy to parents. The guidelines draw on an interview study with parents of 107 children, average age 24 months, in the South East Thames region. In addition case notes were examined, and mothers completed questionnaires to measure current levels of depression and coping strategies. Dissatisfaction with how the diagnosis had been disclosed was greater where children had been premature and/or low birth weight, where they developed more severe degrees of physical disability, and where the diag

Health-related quality of life in abdominal wall hernia: let's ask patients what matters to them?

INTRODUCTION: Quality of Life (QoL) is an important consideration in patients with abdominal wall hernia (AWH). What matters to patients and their everyday experience living with AWH may depend on a variety of personal, psychological, social and environmental factors. At present, no study has addressed what is important to this particular group of patients by asking the patients themselves. This study aims to determine QoL from the patient's perspective by examining the lived experience in this patient population. METHODS: We interviewed 15 patients with AWH until thematic saturation. The pat

Objective assessment of compliance with treatments in acne.

BACKGROUND: Acne occurs in prepubertal individuals, teenagers and adults, and can have a devastating effect on self-esteem and social relationships. Whether an acne sufferer will seek treatment often depends, apart from the severity, on cultural and social aspects, which play a significant role in the attitude of the individuals and how they cope with the condition. Compliance with treatment regimen is an essential element in overall effectiveness of therapy. OBJECTIVES: To assess patient compliance in acne vulgaris. METHODS: In an open prospective study at a dermatology outpatient clinic, p

Staying connected in a changing world: home-dwelling older adults experiences of belonging, well-being, and barriers to social life.

BACKGROUND: As "aging in place" becomes the global policy standard, understanding the social dimensions of living long lives at home is crucial. While the significance of remaining at home is well-documented, we lack insight into how health challenges and the receipt of home care nursing reshape older adults' social experiences. This study explores the experiences of social life in the context of aging in place among older home-dwelling people receiving home care services, aiming to provide a nuanced perspective on what it means to be socially connected. METHODS: A qualitative study was condu

"It Would have been Better if I had Never been Born" - Suicidality in Early Childhood Depressive Disorders and its Association with Externalizing Symptoms Empirical evidence on suicidality in early childhood (< 9 years) and on the role of comorbid externalizing symptoms in depressive disorders remains limited. We aimed to examine how externalizing symptoms, as assessed by multiple informants, are associated with suicidality in young children with depression. In a clinical help-seeking sample of 61 children (3-8 years) with depressive disorders, suicidality was assessed using a clinical intervi

Good enough assessment: A comparison of brief screener and detailed interview assessments of borderline personality disorder symptoms in a clinical research setting.

Structured clinical interviews are the gold standard for identifying borderline personality disorder (BPD) in research. No self-report instrument has been validated as a replacement tool for BPD diagnosis. However, clinical interviews can be time and cost-intensive, limiting their utility as appropriate screening tools. Also, data are lacking regarding the level of training and education interviewers need to use BPD screening instruments effectively. The goal of this project was to clarify best practices for brief screening interviews to identify potential research participants with BPD. We an

A Qualitative Analysis of Mental Well-Being in Postpartum Narratives Following a High-Risk Pregnancy: The Beautiful Agony.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health, at the opposite end of the spectrum from mental illness, is an important yet understudied aspect of maternal well-being. We sought to characterize aspects of emotional, social, and functional well-being in the postpartum period and perceived facilitators and barriers to mental health following a high-risk pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted 28 in-depth interviews with people 3 to 6 months postpartum who experienced a pregnancy complicated by hypertension or diabetes in Atlanta, Georgia. We conducted a thematic analysis to examine dimensions of mental health and preva

Phased Traumatic Stress Responses Among Caregivers of Children and Adults Recently Diagnosed with Acute Leukemia: A Grounded Theory Study.

A diagnosis of acute leukemia (AL) represents a sudden, life-threatening event that places family caregivers (FCs) at high risk for traumatic stress. While traumatic stress symptoms have been documented among FCs later in the cancer trajectory, little is known about how these responses unfold during the immediate peri-diagnostic period, when acute stress disorder (ASD) may emerge, and early intervention could be most impactful. We conducted a qualitative study using a constructivist grounded theory approach to examine early traumatic stress responses among FCs of adults and children with newly

Comparison of Self-Report and Structured Clinical Interview Scores for the Assessment of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale.

This study addresses the need for an examination of the criterion validity of a highly popular self-report instrument which is used to gain a quick first impression of personality dysfunction: the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0). To this end, the relationship between LPFS-BF 2.0 scores and SCID-5-AMPD-I scores rated by trained clinicians was investigated in a clinical Norwegian sample (N = 155). Moreover, we investigated the relationship between the Norwegian version of the LPFS-BF 2.0 and other self-report instruments (the WSAS, GAD-7, and PHQ-9). Correlati

Maintaining Well-Being in Times of Limited Social Contacts: Experiences of Community-Dwelling Older Adults Living Alone During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Sudden disruptions to the social environment of older adults living alone, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can challenge their ability to maintain well-being. This study employed an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore how Dutch older adults (≥65 years) living alone maintained their well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between June and October 2021, we conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with older adults living alone in the Netherlands. Participants were recruited through online newsletters and home care and social work institutions. We identified three key themes. The t
