Iron, neuro-bioavailability and depression.

Medical management of iron deficiency (ID) requires to consider its consequences in biochemical and physiological plural functions, beyond heme/hemoglobin disrupted synthesis. Fatigue, muscle weakness, reduced exercise capacity, changes in thymia and modified emotional behaviors are the commonest symptoms integrated in the history of ID, dependent or not of the hemoglobin concentration. The relationship between depression and absolute ID (AID) is a condition which is often unrecognized. Neuro-bioavailability and brain capture of blood iron are necessary for an appropriate synthesis of neurotra

Nutrition of Honduran mothers/caretakers.

In 1996, the Honduran Ministry of Health conducted a national micronutrient survey of children 12-71 months old, which also included an assessment of the nutrition status of their mothers/caretakers. The 1,126 mothers/caretakers who participated in the survey tended to be short and plump. About 15% of them were at obstetric risk by virtue of their short stature and/or low body weight. About 9% had chronic energy deficiency (CED), but 27% were at least 20% overweight. CED was associated with socioeconomic indicators of poverty. Risk factors for being at least 20% overweight included being over

Epidemiological and nonclinical studies investigating effects of iron in carcinogenesis--a critical review.

The efficacy and tolerability of intravenous (i.v.) iron in managing cancer-related anemia and iron deficiency has been clinically evaluated and reviewed recently. However, long-term data in cancer patients are not available; yet, long-term i.v. iron treatment in hemodialysis patients is not associated with increased cancer risk. This review summarizes epidemiological and nonclinical data on the role of iron in carcinogenesis. In humans, epidemiological data suggest correlations between certain cancers and increased iron exposure or iron overload. Nonclinical models that investigated whether i

Iron and copper in fetal development.

Copper and iron are both essential micronutrients. Because they can both accept and donate electrons, they are central to many energy depend … view, we consider what these problems are and how they may arise. We examine the role of copper and iron deficiencies separately during fetal development, in terms of birth outcome and then how problems with status in utero can have long term sequelae for the offspring. We examine several possible mechanisms of action, both direct and indirect. Direct causes includ …

Zinc plus beta-carotene supplementation of pregnant women is superior to beta-carotene supplementation alone in improving vitamin A status in both mothers and infants.

BACKGROUND: Deficiencies of vitamin A, iron, and zinc are prevalent in women and infants in developing countries. Supplementation during pregnancy can benefit mother and infant. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether supplementation during pregnancy with iron and folic acid plus beta-carotene or zinc or both improves the micronutrient status of mothers and infants postpartum. DESIGN: Pregnant women (n = 170) were supplemented daily only during pregnancy with beta-carotene (4.5 mg), zinc (30 mg), or both or placebo plus iron (30 mg) and folic acid (0.4 mg) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-contr

Factors moderating cadmium bioavailability: Key considerations for comparing blood cadmium levels between groups.

Cadmium (Cd) is recognized as a significant hazard to human health, with exposure linked to a variety of adverse outcomes including various cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and osteoporosis. Residing in areas contaminated with Cd is undoubtedly a risk factor for developing the aforementioned conditions. However, the risk of developing Cd-related disorders is not uniform among individuals. Deficiencies in iron, zinc, and calcium, along with iron deficiency anemia, decreased lung function often seen in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and low circulating lev

Banana21: From Gene Discovery to Deregulated Golden Bananas.

Uganda is a tropical country with a population in excess of 30 million, >80% of whom live in rural areas. Bananas (Musa spp.) are the staple food of Uganda with the East African Highland banana, a cooking banana, the primary starch source. Unfortunately, these bananas are low in pro-vitamin A (PVA) and iron and, as a result, banana-based diets are low in these micronutrients which results in very high levels of inadequate nutrition. This inadequate nutrition manifests as high levels of vitamin A deficiency, iron deficiency anemia, and stunting in children. A project known as Banana21 commenced

Review of fortified food and beverage products for pregnant and lactating women and their impact on nutritional status.

Fortified beverages and supplementary foods, when given during pregnancy, have been shown to have positive effects on preventing maternal anaemia and iron deficiency. Studies show that use of micronutrient fortified supplementary foods, especially those containing milk and/or essential fatty acids during pregnancy, increase mean birthweight by around 60-73 g. A few studies have also shown that fortified supplementary foods have impacts on increasing birth length and reducing preterm delivery. Fortification levels have ranged generally from 50% to 100% of the recommended nutrient intake (RNI).

The transcription factor MYC1 interacts with FIT to negatively regulate iron homeostasis in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Iron (Fe) is an indispensable trace mineral element for the normal growth of plants, and it is involved in different biological processes; Fe shortage in plants can induce chlorosis and yield loss. The objective of this research is to identify novel genes that participated in the regulation of Fe-deficiency stress in Arabidopsis thaliana. A basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor (MYC1) was identified to be interacting with the FER-LIKE IRON DEFICIENCY-INDUCED TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR (FIT) using a yeast-two-hybrid assay. Transcript-level analysis showed that there was a decrease in MYC

Comparative effectiveness of daily therapeutic supplementation with multiple micronutrients and iron-folic acid versus iron-folic acid alone in children with mild-to-moderate anaemia in rural India: an open-label, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a major public health problem among children younger than 5 years and supplementation with iron-folic acid alone has not been found to result in desired improvements in haemoglobin concentrations. We aimed to compare the effect of supplementation with iron-folic acid plus multiple micronutrients versus iron-folic acid supplementation alone on haemoglobin concentration and cure rates in children with mild-to-moderate anaemia. METHODS: In this individually randomised controlled trial conducted in rural Haryana, India, children (aged 6-59 months) with mild-to-moderate anae

Plummer-Vinson syndrome and dilation therapy: a report of two cases.

Plummer-Vinson syndrome is known as the association of postcricoid dysphagia, upper esophageal web, and iron deficiency anemia. Although correction of iron deficiency may result in resolution of dysphagia and sometimes disappearance of the webs, dilation therapy is usually necessary to remove webs and relieve dysphagia. We report two cases of Plummer-Vinson syndrome. Both patients presented with significant and longstanding dysphagia, sideropenia, glossitis and koilonychia. Our two patients had occasional choking and aspiration episodes at eating and endoscope did not pass through at the level

Recovery of Iron Stores After Adolescents Donate Blood.

BACKGROUND: Teenagers aged 16 to 18 are at increased risk for iron deficiency, exacerbated by losses with whole blood (WB) or double red blood cell (2RBC) donations. Required 56-day (WB) or 112-day (2RBC) interdonation intervals (IDIs) are too short for many to replace lost iron without supplements. METHODS: Teenagers donating WB or 2RBCs at Vitalant, a national blood provider, had serum ferritin measured at their first and immediately subsequent successful donation from December 2016 to 2018. We modeled postindex log-ferritin as a function of IDI to estimate the shortest intervals that corre

Iron overload and cofactors with special reference to alcohol, hepatitis C virus infection and steatosis/insulin resistance.

There are several cofactors which affect body iron metabolism and accelerate iron overload. Alcohol and hepatic viral infections are the most typical examples for clarifying the role of cofactors in iron overload. In these conditions, iron is deposited in hepatocytes and Kupffer cells and reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced through Fenton reaction have key role to facilitate cellular uptake of transferrin-bound iron. Furthermore, hepcidin, antimicrobial peptide produced mainly in the liver is also responsible for intestinal iron absorption and reticuloendothelial iron release. In patients w

The effect of different types of anemia on HbA1c levels in non-diabetics.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common diseases worldwide with significant morbidity and mortality. HbA1c remains one of the most important methods for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Since HbA1c is a reflection of the glucose attached to red blood cells, factors affecting hemoglobin and red blood cells' half-life can influence HbA1c measurements. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effect of different types of anemia including iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia, β -thalassemia trait, and megaloblastic anemia on HbA1c levels in a tertiary hospital over

Hypocalcemia and Hypophosphatemia following Concurrent Denosumab Injection and Ferric Carboxymaltose Infusion in a Patient with Normal Renal Function.

Hypocalcemia following denosumab administration is well described. Hypophosphatemia following an intravenous iron infusion is an increasingly recognized adverse effect. Intravenous iron preparations increase fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels. This both stimulates renal phosphate excretion and reduces 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) levels, resulting in reduced calcium absorption. Both osteoporosis and iron deficiency are common and frequently co-occur. The convenience and efficacy of both denosumab, a subcutaneous injection, and ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject®), a 15-minute int

Anaemia of Chronic Disease: An In-Depth Review.

Anaemia is the most common haematological disorder affecting humanity and is usually observed in chronic disease states such as non-specific anaemia, which may cause diagnostic difficulties. In chronically ill patients with anaemia, this has a negative impact on quality of life as well as survival. This paper aims at reviewing the pathogenesis of this form of anaemia with a view to suggesting future targets for therapeutic intervention. The ability to diagnose this disorder depends on the ability of the physician to correlate the possible clinical pathways of the underlying disease with the pa
