Dynamic white matter changes in recovered COVID-19 patients: a two-year follow-up study.

Background and purpose: Long COVID with regard to the neurological system deserves more attention, as a surge of treated patients are being discharged from the hospital. As the dynamic changes in white matter after two years remain unknown, this characteristic was the focus of this study. Methods: We investigated 17 recovered COVID-19 patients at two years after discharge. Diffusion tensor imaging, neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging were performed to identify white matter integrity and changes from one to two years after discharge. Data for 13 revisited healthy controls were co

Serum lidocaine (lignocaine) concentrations during prolonged perioperative infusion in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery: A secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial.

Perioperative lidocaine (lignocaine) infusions are being employed with increasing frequency. The determinants of systemic lidocaine concentrations during prolonged administration are unclear. In the Long-term Outcomes after Lidocaine Infusions for PostOperative Pain (LOLIPOP) pilot trial, the impact of infusion duration and body size metrics on serum lidocaine concentrations was examined with regression models in 48 women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Lidocaine was delivered as an intravenous bolus (1.5 mg/kg) and infusion (2 mg/kg per h) intraoperatively, followed by a 12-h subcutaneous i

Comparison of Three Motion Capture-Based Algorithms for Spatiotemporal Gait Characteristics: How Do Algorithms Affect Accuracy and Precision of Clinical Outcomes?

Gait assessment is of interest to clinicians and researchers because it provides information about patients' functional mobility. Optoelectronic camera-based systems with gait event detection algorithms are considered the gold standard for gait assessment. Yet, the choice of the algorithm used to process data and extract the desired parameters from those detected gait events has an impact on the validity and reliability of the gait parameters computed. There are multiple techniques documented in the literature for computing gait events, including the analysis of the minimal position of the hee

Impact of Cerebral Autoregulation Monitoring in Cerebrovascular Disease: A Systematic Review.

Cerebral autoregulation (CA) prevents brain injury by maintaining a relatively constant cerebral blood flow despite fluctuations in cerebral perfusion pressure. This process is disrupted consequent to various neurologic pathologic processes, which may result in worsening neurologic outcomes. Herein, we aim to highlight evidence describing CA changes and the impact of CA monitoring in patients with cerebrovascular disease, including ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). The study was preformed according to the Preferred Reporting Items f

INVESTIGATING ASSOCIATIONS AMONG RELATEDNESS, GENETIC DIVERSITY, AND CAUSES OF MORTALITY IN SOUTHERN SEA OTTERS (ENHYDRA LUTRIS NEREIS).

Southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis) population recovery is influenced by a variety of factors, including predation, biotoxin exposure, infectious disease, oil spills, habitat degradation, and resource limitation. This population has also experienced a significant genetic bottleneck, resulting in low genetic diversity. We investigated how two metrics, familial relatedness and genetic diversity, are correlated with common causes of mortality in southern sea otters, including cardiomyopathy, acanthocephalan (Profilicollis spp.) peritonitis, systemic protozoal infection (Toxoplasma gondii a

Retinal Microvascular Changes in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, and Meta-Regression.

BACKGROUND: The remarkable increase in prevalence and significant morbidity of neurodegenerative diseases pose a tremendous burden for the health care system. Changes in retinal microvasculature metrics associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may provide opportunities for early diagnosis and intervention. However, the role of retinal vascular biomarkers remains controversial. We aim to perform a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression to evaluate the comprehensive retinal microvasculature changes in patients with AD and MCI. METHODS: We conduc

Remote sensing techniques for automated marine mammals detection: a review of methods and current challenges.

Marine mammals are under pressure from multiple threats, such as global climate change, bycatch, and vessel collisions. In this context, more frequent and spatially extensive surveys for abundance and distribution studies are necessary to inform conservation efforts. Marine mammal surveys have been performed visually from land, ships, and aircraft. These methods can be costly, logistically challenging in remote locations, dangerous to researchers, and disturbing to the animals. The growing use of imagery from satellite and unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) can help address some of these challeng

Reducing the particles generated by flushing institutional toilets.

Airborne particles play a significant role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. A previous study reported that institutional flush-O-meter (FOM) toilets can generate 3-12 times as many droplets as other toilets by splashing (large droplets) and bubble bursting (fine droplets). In this study, an aerosol suppression lid was evaluated to measure the reduction of particles by size using three metrics; number, surface area, and mass concentrations. To quantify toilet flush aerosol over time, detailed particle size distributions (from 0.016-19.81 µm across 152 size bins

Reexamining Risk Aversion: Willingness to Pursue and Utilize Nonideal Donor Livers Among US Donation Service Areas.

BACKGROUND: Livers from "nonideal" but acceptable donors are underutilized; however, organ procurement organization (OPO) metrics do not assess how OPO-specific practices contribute to these trends. In this analysis, we evaluated nonideal liver donor avoidance or risk aversion among OPOs and within US donation service areas (DSAs). METHODS: Adult donors in the United Network for Organ Sharing registry who donated ≥1 organ for transplantation between 2007 and 2019 were included. Nonideal donors were defined by any of the following: age > 70, hepatitis C seropositive, body mass index > 40, dona

Impact of an orthogeriatric collaborative care model for older adults with hip fracture in a community hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that the incidence of postoperative delirium, the hospital length of stay and time to surgery are reduced when older adults with a hip fracture are cared for by a multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive geriatric assessments. Most of these studies have been conducted in academic centres. We sought to determine if implementation of an orthogeriatric collaborative care model would improve key quality of care metrics in a community hospital setting. METHODS: This retrospective pre- and postintervention single-site study was conducted in a community hospital

Multiple, objectively measured sleep dimensions including hypoxic burden and chronic kidney disease: findings from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep may contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD) through several pathways, including hypoxia-induced systemic and intraglomerular pressure, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. However, few studies have investigated the association between multiple objectively measured sleep dimensions and CKD. METHODS: We investigated the cross-sectional association between sleep dimensions and CKD among 1895 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Sleep Ancillary Study participants who completed in-home polysomnography, wrist actigraphy and a sleep questionnaire. Beyond health system contact: measuring and validating quality of childbirth care indicators in primary level facilities of northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of quality of health care has been largely overlooked and continues to be a major health system bottleneck in monitoring performance and quality to evaluate progress against defined targets for better decision making. Hence, metrics of maternity care are needed to advance from health service contact alone to content of care. We assessed the accuracy of indicators that describe the quality of basic care for childbirth functions both at the individual level as well as at the population level in Northern Ethiopia. METHODS: A validation study was conducted by comparing wom

Fully automated method for glaucoma screening using robust optic nerve head detection and unsupervised segmentation based cup-to-disc ratio computation in retinal fundus images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Visual impairment affects a significant part of the population worldwide. Glaucoma is one of these main causes, a chronic eye disease leading to progressive vision loss. Early glaucoma screening is an important task, allowing a slowing down of the pathology spreading and avoidance of irreversible vision damages. When manual assessment by experts suffers from disadvantages, exploiting the relevant Cup-to-Disc Ratio (CDR) feature as a structural indicator to assess the damage to the optic nerve head (ONH) is an efficient way for early glaucoma screening and diagnosis.

Using machine learning to predict 30-day readmissions after posterior lumbar fusion: an NSQIP study involving 23,264 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Unplanned preventable hospital readmissions within 30 days are a great burden to patients and the healthcare system. With an estimated $41.3 billion spent yearly, reducing such readmission rates is of the utmost importance. With the widespread adoption of big data and machine learning, clinicians can use these analytical tools to understand these complex relationships and find predictive factors that can be generalized to future patients. The object of this study was to assess the efficacy of a machine learning algorithm in the prediction of 30-day hospital readmission after posteri

Dietary antioxidative supplements and diabetic retinopathy; a systematic review.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ocular anterior segment diseases are major causes of global visual impairment. Early and accurate detection of anterior segment abnormalities is essential to support predictive diagnostics, targeted prevention, and individualized treatments management. Conventional slit-lamp assessments are often limited by human observation and inter-clinician variability, restricting their ability to achieve rapid and large-scale disease screening. To advance anterior segment care within the predictive, preventive, and personalized medicine (PPPM/3PM) framework, this study aimed to develop a

Integrating a Profile of Frontal Face With Its Mirror Image for Facial Reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Face recognition plays an important role in the field of biometrics, bioinformatics, and forensic identification. Human faces appear bilaterally symmetric. However, asymmetry is a norm in the human body and careful morphological and metric examination of the human face gives an exact idea of the asymmetry present in the face of an individual. Most of the studies on asymmetry of human face have been carried out with regard to evaluation of expressions in psychology, anthropology, and biometrics. In this preliminary study, an idea of the human face symmetry has been

Daptomycin Improves Outcomes Regardless of Vancomycin MIC in a Propensity-Matched Analysis of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections.

Vancomycin remains the mainstay treatment for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (BSIs) despite increased treatment failures. Daptomycin has been shown to improve clinical outcomes in patients with BSIs caused by MRSA isolates with vancomycin MICs of >1 mg/liter, but these studies relied on automated testing systems. We evaluated the outcomes of BSIs caused by MRSA isolates for which vancomycin MICs were determined by standard broth microdilution (BMD). A retrospective, matched cohort of patients with MRSA BSIs treated with vancomycin or daptomycin from J
