Effects of a 217-km mountain ultramarathon on the gut microbiota of an obese runner: A case report.

Obesity is characterized by specific changes in the composition of the gut microbiota (GM). Exercise can contribute to the modulation of GM. This is the first case study to analyze the composition and metabolism of the GM of an obese runner in a single-stage mountain ultramarathon (MUM) with a mileage of 217 km. Fecal samples were collected 7 days before the race (T0), 15 min after the end of the race (T1), and 7 days after the end of the race (T2). GM composition was analyzed by real-time PCR and shotgun sequencing. We observed a decrease in Bacillota/Bacteroidota ratio and α-diversity after …

Importance of diet and intestinal microbiota in the prevention of colorectal cancer - colonoscopy early screening diagnosis.

Colorectal cancer is a term used to describe colon and rectal cancer, which is the third most common type of cancer. A MEDLINE and PubMed search resulted in the inclusion of manuscripts written in the last 10 years, using keywords relevant to the topic of the manuscript. By analyzing the aim of the searched studies and manuscripts, adequate articles were included that described the stated problem. The frequency of colorectal cancer varies with climate, nutrition, and many other factors, primarily endogenous, hereditary, intestinal microbiome, as well as external factors, such as exposure of th

Assessment of the vaginal microbiota before and after use of hyperosmolal lubricant during transvaginal ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal lubricants are commonly used during sexual activity and clinical procedures such as transvaginal ultrasound. Epidemiologic and laboratory studies indicate hyperosmolal water-based lubricants may disrupt the vaginal microbiota, particularly the beneficial Lactobacillus spp. These bacteria play a critical role in protecting against sexually transmitted infection acquisition and other adverse gynecologic and obstetric outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate changes in the composition of the vaginal microbiota before and after a single exposure to lubricant over a 10-week p…

Effects of surface sterilization of fertile eggs on the yolk microbiota during the chicken embryo development.

Surface sterilization of the fertile eggs is a common process for commercial broiler breeding to avoid pathogenic bacterial infections before incubation. However, it is also possible to remove the beneficial microbes that might contribute to the development of chicken embryos. Thus, we established a model to mimic surface sterilization in the laboratory by rubbing fertile eggs with 70% ethanol and investigated the effect of eggshell surface sterilization on the yolk microbiota and its potential role in chicken (Gallus gallus) embryo development. In total, 460 Ross 308 fertile eggs were randoml…

Interaction and Metabolic Pathways: Elucidating the Role of Gut Microbiota in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Pathogenesis.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a complex metabolic condition during pregnancy with an intricate link to gut microbiota alterations. Throughout gestation, notable shifts in the gut microbial component occur. GDM is marked by significant dysbiosis, with a decline in beneficial taxa like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus and a surge in opportunistic taxa such as Enterococcus. These changes, detectable in the first trimester, hint as the potential early markers for GDM risk. Alongside these taxa shifts, microbial metabolic outputs, especially short-chain fatty acids and bile acids, are per…

Composition and interaction of maternal microbiota with immune mediators during pregnancy and their outcome: A narrative review.

The connection between maternal microbiota and infant health has been greatly garnered interest for therapeutic purposes. The early resident microbiota perpetually exhibits much more flexibility as compared to that of the adults, and therefore, constant need of understanding the infant as well as maternal microbiota and their implications however has increased. In this review, we focus mainly on the diversity of overall maternal microbiota including the gut, vaginal, colostrum microbiota and how inflammatory markers fluctuate throughout the normal pregnancy as well in pregnancy with complicati…

Contributions of Artificial Intelligence to Analysis of Gut Microbiota in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder whose etiology is not known today, but everything indicates that it is multifactorial. For example, genetic and epigenetic factors seem to be involved in the etiology of ASD. In recent years, there has been an increase in studies on the implications of gut microbiota (GM) on the behavior of children with ASD given that dysbiosis in GM may trigger the onset, development and progression of ASD through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. At the same time, significant progress has occurred in the developmen…

Effects of inhaled fine particulate matter on the lung injury as well as gut microbiota in broilers.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been widely regarded as an important environmental risk factor that has widely influenced health of both animals and humans. Lung injury is the main cause of PM2.5 affecting respiratory tract health. Gut microbiota participates in the development of lung injury in many pathological processes. However, there is still unknown the specific effects of PM2.5 on the gut-lung axis in broilers. Thus, we conducted a broiler model based on 3-wk-old male Arbor Acres broiler to explore the underlying mechanism. Our results showed that PM2.5 exposure triggered TLR4 signa…

Microbiota and social behavior alterations in a mouse model of down syndrome: Modulation by a synbiotic treatment.

Sex differences in the composition and functionality of gut microbiota are an emerging field of interest in neurodevelopmental disorders, as they may help in understanding the phenotypic disparities between males and females. This study aimed to characterize sex-related specific alterations in gut microbiota composition in a mouse model of Down syndrome (Ts65Dn mice, TS mice) through the sequencing of the PCR-amplified 16S ribosomal DNA fraction. Moreover, it intended to examine whether the modulation of gut microbiota by the administration of a synbiotic (SYN) treatment would be beneficial fo…

Causal effect of air pollution on the risk of brain health and potential mediation by gut microbiota.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiologic investigations have examined the correlation between air pollution and neurologic disorders and neuroanatomic structures. Increasing evidence underscores the profound influence of the gut microbiota on brain health. However, the existing evidence is equivocal, and a causal link remains uncertain. This study aimed: to determine if there is a causal connection between four key air pollutants, and 42 neurologic diseases, and 1325 distinct brain structures; and to explore the potential role of the gut microbiota in mediating these associations. METHODS: Univariable Mendel…

Could the gut microbiota be capable of making individuals more or less susceptible to environmental toxicants?

Environmental toxicants are chemical substances capable to impair environmental quality and exert adverse effects on humans and other animals. The main routes of exposure to these pollutants are through the respiratory tract, skin, and oral ingestion. When ingested orally, they will encounter trillions of microorganisms that live in a community - the gut microbiota (GM). While pollutants can disrupt the GM balance, GM plays an essential role in the metabolism and bioavailability of these chemical compounds. Under physiological conditions, strategies used by the GM for metabolism and/or excreti…

Microbiota signatures associated with invasive Candida albicans infection in the gastrointestinal tract of immunodeficient mice.

Candida albicans is a commensal microorganism in the human gut but occasionally causes invasive C. albicans infection (ICA), especially in immunocompromised individuals. Early initiation of antifungal therapy is associated with reduced mortality of ICA, but rapid diagnosis remains a challenge. The ICA-associated changes in the gut microbiota can be used as diagnostic and therapeutic targets but have been poorly investigated. In this study, we utilized an immunodeficient Rag2γc (Rag2-/-il2γc-/-) mouse model to investigate the gut microbiota alterations caused by C. albicans throughout its cycle…

Exploration of the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome and traditional Chinese medicine intervention based on gut microbiota.

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) represents a prevalent syndrome among various chronic kidney disease pathologies and is known for its higher severity and worse prognosis compared with chronic glomerulonephritis. Understanding its pathogenesis and identifying more effective treatment modalities have long been a concern of kidney specialists. With the introduction of the gut-kidney axis concept and the progress in omics technologies, alterations in the gut microbiota have been observed in primary and secondary NS. This link has been extensively researched in conditions such as diabetic nephropathy and i…
