Interpersonal Problems and Their Mental Health Correlates: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Interpersonal relationships have long been considered fundamental to understanding mental health and psychological functioning. Among various aspects of these relationships, interpersonal problems seem particularly significant in relation to mental health. This meta-analytic review aims to summarize the associations between interpersonal problems and multiple domains of mental health based on naturalistic, observational data from both clinical and nonclinical populations. Focusing on studies using the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP), we examined the cross-sectional associations betwe

The association between cannabis use and suicidal intensity in psychiatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 15 years, most states have legalized the medical use of cannabis. Since then, daily use nearly tripled while the number of adults dying by suicide increased by 31%. Key studies found a greater suicidal intensity associated with cannabis use (CU) in adolescents. Adult associations have been understudied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations between CU and suicidal ideation intensity (SII) in adults. METHODS: We examined 530 psychiatric inpatients ages 18 and above using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance

The relationship between psychological resilience and caregiver burden among caregivers of patients with bipolar disorder: the mediating role of coping styles.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) causes ongoing stress for family caregivers due to its recurring nature. Resilience can reduce stress but may also lead to excessive coping efforts, causing chronic strain. Coping styles, reflecting resilience, can both mitigate immediate stress and worsen long-term fatigue. Current research overlooks how BD-specific factors like aggression influence the "resilience-coping-burden" relationship. This study examines how coping styles mediate these effects to guide targeted interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted among 176 f

The relationship between empathy and mental health: A mediation model via rumination and interpersonal competence.

BACKGROUND: As a critical capacity in medical education, the trajectory of empathy development and its relationship with medical students' mental health has remained inconclusive. To address this purpose, the current study was conducted, with addressing the mediation role of rumination and interpersonal competence in this relationship. METHODS: A total of 640 medical students from Guangdong Province, China, were recruited. The levels of empathy across grades and genders were assessed. In addition, participants' interpersonal competence, rumination, and psychological distress were measured. Li

Temporal disorientation during war: associations with work-family conflict, emotional distress, and burnout.

INTRODUCTION: Disruptions in the temporal experience-such as subjective sense of time being long, short or distant compared to "objective" time-have been found in the context of extreme emotional events. This research, conducted a month after the start of the war in Israel, aimed to identify characteristics of temporal experience among a population facing ongoing crisis conditions, and to examine their relationship to emotional distress and burnout. Based on Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory it was hypothesized that temporal disorientation is essentially the loss of a vital psychologi

Intergenerational transmission of maternal childhood maltreatment, prenatal substance exposure, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early adolescence at age 12.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the intergenerational impact of maternal childhood maltreatment (MCM) in the context of prenatal substance exposure (PSE). This study investigates whether PSE is part of the pathway of MCM or an independent risk factor affecting offspring psychopathology. METHODS: Participants were 284 birth mother-child (44% male) dyads, primarily Black, low-income, enrolled at birth. Exposure to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or cocaine in utero was assessed at 1 month postpartum. MCM was assessed at child age 4, and maternal psychological distress and offspring maltreatm

Psychological distress in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome: the roles of body image and self-criticism.

OBJECTIVE: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder associated with reduced quality of life and psychological distress (PD) including anxiety and depression. The mechanisms linking IBS to PD are unclear. Previous studies showed that body image and self-criticism may be contributory factors. Thus, the objective of this study was to test the potential mediating roles of these factors in the relationship between IBS and PD. METHOD: 507 adults participated, including 142 with IBS (Mean age = 31.9, SD = 11.7), and 365 healthy peers (Mean age = 26.2, SD = 6.4), rangin

Psychological Distress and Social Adjustment of a Working Adult Population with Single-Sided Deafness.

Background: Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition in the world population that determines emotional, social, and economic costs. In recent years, it has been definitely recognized that the lack of physiological binaural hearing causes alterations in the localization of sounds and reduced speech recognition in noise and reverberation. This study aims to explore the psycho-social profile of adult workers affected by single-sided deafness (SSD), without other major medical conditions and otological symptoms, through comparison to subjects with normal hearing. Methods: This is a cross-secti

PSORIASIS AND MENTAL HEALTH: A PSYCHODERMATOLOGICAL APPROACH WITH AN EMPHASIS ON PSYCHOTHERAPY.

Psoriasis is a multifactorial, inflammatory, chronic disease caused by the complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, including psychosocial distress. This review reasons the importance of the biopsychosocial model and why it should be considered when treating patients with psoriasis. We aimed to provide current evidence for the psychological etiopathogenesis, psychosocial comorbidities, psychosocial assessment, and psychological therapeutic interventions in psoriasis. The main pathways linking stress to psoriasis involve the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, sympathetic-adre

Psychopathological mediators between insecure attachment and psychotic features in a non-clinical sample: the role of depression and interpersonal sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: Attachment styles represent a personality pattern critical to psychological health, with insecure attachment being a central factor in developing psychopathological characteristics of psychosis. However, its downstream psychopathological pathways remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the putative psychopathological mediators in the relationship between insecure attachment and psychotic features in a non-clinical sample of university students. METHODS: We recruited two non-clinical samples for a total of 978 subjects, 324 males and 654 females, and administered the Rela

Moving toward transdisciplinary approaches to addressing HIV and psychological trauma: Barriers and facilitators to building collaborations.

Most people living with HIV have experienced potentially traumatic events (e.g., physical assault, sexual assault, intimate partner violence) and, consequently, are at risk of trauma-related mental health difficulties, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, research and clinical efforts related to HIV and psychological trauma remain siloed. Guided by the four-phase model of transdisciplinary research, the current study explored barriers and facilitators to transdisciplinary HIV/trauma clinical and research collaborations to address the overlap between HIV and psychological trauma

Examining resilience of individuals living with sickle cell disease in the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the physical and mental health of people worldwide including those living with genetic conditions. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hematologic chronic disease that causes multisystem damage and morbidity. Individuals living with SCD have had to continue managing their care for their chronic disease while following public health measures to protect against infection with COVID-19. Promoting resilience has been posited as being psychologically protective for those living with SCD. This study examines changes in resilience over time in a SCD populatio

[Not Available].

The development and course of heart disease can be decisively influenced by psychological comorbidities (especially depression, anxiety disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder). An acute or chronic cardiological disease can in turn trigger or exacerbate mental disorders. These relationships are of considerable importance for cardiac rehabilitation, since psychological comorbidities often limit activity and participation more than organic heart disease. In monodisciplinary rehabilitation procedures (cardiological or psychosomatic), however, in the case of comorbidity, one clinical picture ca

Salivary immune markers are not associated with self-reported childhood maltreatment or psychopathology in adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress has repeatedly been found to be associated with pro-inflammatory markers in blood, and neuro-inflammation may play a role in the development of psychopathology after early life stress. Salivary immune testing is a novel method to non-invasively assess immune functioning. We examined a large range of salivary immune markers in relation to self-reported childhood maltreatment and psychopathology in an adult sample. METHODS: Participants (N = 118, 51% female, mean age = 46.6 yrs, range 22-64) were drawn from a cross-sectional three-generation study, and supplied

Predictors of Psychological Distress in Women with Endometriosis: The Role of Multimorbidity, Body Image, and Self-Criticism.

While large numbers of women report high levels of psychological distress associated with endometriosis, others report levels of distress that are comparable to those of healthy women. Thus, the aim of the current study was to develop an explanatory model for the effect of endometriosis on women's psychological distress. Furthermore, it sought to further investigate the role of body image, self-criticism, and pain intensity on the psychological distress associated with endometriosis and establish the effect of chronic illness load on the development of this distress. This study comprised a tot
