LncRNA-MALAT1 is a promising biomarker for prognostic evaluation of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

PURPOSE: MALAT1 is recognized as an oncogenic lncRNA in various malignancies. Here, the authors aim to explore the association of MALAT1 expression and prognostic implication in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS: The tongue tissues of 128 tongue SCC cases satisfying strict follow-up criteria and 28 normal cases were subjected to qRT-PCR assay for monitoring MALAT1 expression. Chi-square test was applied to explore the correlation between MALAT1 expression and clinicopathological features of tongue SCC. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to calculate survival rates. Cox proportional ha

[Evaluation of oesophagoscopy for staging and restaging of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: Oesophagoscopy is important in diagnostic and follow up investigation in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Second primary malignancies of the oesophagus have major impact on therapy of the primary tumour. Considering the low incidence of oesophageal second primaries and the serious complication of oesophageal perforation routine oesophagoscopy is being discussed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Incidence of oesophageal second primaries and complication rates in oesophagoscopy were identified in a systematic review. A retrospective analysis was performed in our own

Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma presenting as a large submucosal mass: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is rarely encountered clinically. SCC, which presents as a submucosal tumor, is even rarer. Without the support of pathological evidence, it is difficult to make a correct preoperative diagnosis. Due to limited clinical data, the pathogenesis and treatment of gastric SCC remain unclear. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with unexplained weight loss. Endoscopy revealed a submucosal mass without any ulcer on its surface located on the body of the stomach. The results of 2 gastroscopic mucosal biopsies were c

Risk Factors and Prognosis for Metastatic Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Cohort Study.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) has metastatic potential. The aims of this study were to identify the risk factors for metastasis of primary cSCC and for poor prognosis in metastatic cSCC. Retrospective primary tumour cohorts of metastatic cSCCs (n = 85) and non-metastatic cSCCs (n = 218) were analysed. The mean annual rate of metastasis for primary cSCCs was 2.28%. In 49.4% of patients with metastatic cSCC, metastasis was detected within 6 months of diagnosis of the primary cSCC. There was no prior history of cSCC in 84.7% of metastatic cSCCs. Risk factors for metastasis included Cla

Accuracy of dermoscopic criteria for the differential diagnosis between irritated seborrheic keratosis and squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Even with the addition of dermoscopy, a significant morphologic overlap exists between irritated seborrheic keratosis (ISK) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the dermoscopic criteria that could serve as potent predictors for the differential diagnosis between ISK and SCC. METHODS: Dermoscopic images of histopathologically diagnosed ISKs and SCCs were evaluated by 3 independent investigators for the presence of predefined criteria. RESULTS: A total of 104 SCCs and 61 ISKs were included. The main dermoscopic predictors of SCC we

Diverse spectral band-based deep residual network for tongue squamous cell carcinoma classification using fiber optic Raman spectroscopy.

The research is to propose a new classification framework, called diverse spectral band-based deep residual network (DSB-ResNet), which can distinguish tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) from non-cancerous tissue. A fiber optic Raman spectroscopy system is used to collect Raman spectral data of TSCC and normal tissues. DSB-ResNet takes advantage of diverse spectral band-based spectra without processing to derive spectral representations from different spectral bands of Raman spectra, which improves the ability to identify TSCC. To show the superiority of the proposed method, the existing me

[Squamous cell carcinoma arising in oral lichen planus : Report of two cases].

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory, immunologically mediated mucocutaneous dermatosis. Lichen planus mucosae predominantly affects the oral cavity. Various trigger factors such as bacterial or viral infections, drugs or physical stimuli are discussed in the development of the disease. An association with human papillomavirus infections has also been described, but is not sufficiently proven. Lichen planus mucosae is considered as a premalignant condition, but the malignant transformation rate is low. The risk of malignant transformation is significantly increased in patients with oral lic

Case Report: Cetuximab use in advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma resistant to chemotherapy.

We present the case of a 60-year-old man with unresectable cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) of the sternal area, which was not amenable to radiation therapy. The treatment history of this patient is remarkable as the disease had progressed through all lines of conventional therapy established in the literature. We decided to initiate treatment with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor cetuximab and we reassessed the patient after 12 weeks with a whole-body CT scan, documenting stability in the size and radiologic features of the disease. Cetuximab, like all current treatme

[Aetiopathology and prevention of oropharyngeal cancer].

Oropharyngeal cancer is in the sixth position of cancer incidence in the world (after colorectal, breast, prostate, bladder, and cervix uteri cancer). More than 90% of them are squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer can originate on the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. The risk factors associated with oropharyngeal cancer are tobacco, alcohol, and poor oral hygiene. However, other conditions, such as infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) and oral dysbiosis, are gaining prominence. Pre-malignant and malignant lesions are related to diverse factors that can be monitored by the h
