Cyclosporin A inhibits PDGF-BB induced hyaluronan synthesis in orbital fibroblasts.

Orbital connective tissue changes are contributors to the pathogenesis in thyroid eye disease (TED). Activated fibroblasts respond to immune stimuli with proliferation and increased hyaluronan (HA) production. Cyclosporin A (CsA) was reported to be beneficial in the treatment of TED. PDGF isoforms are increased in orbital tissue of TED patients and enhance HA production. We aimed to study the effect of CsA on HA production and hyaluronan synthase (HAS1, 2 and 3) and hyaluronidase (HYAL1 and 2) mRNA expressions in orbital fibroblasts (OFs). Measurements were performed in the presence or absence…

Spin and orbital magnetic moments of UTe2 induced by the external magnetic field.

Correlated band theory implemented as a combination of the relativistic density functional theory with exact diagonalization [DFT+U(ED)] of the Anderson impurity term with Coulomb repulsion U in the 5f shell is applied to the magnetic field polarized state of [Formula: see text]. We demonstrate that the DFT+U(ED) approach provides a good agreement with very recent x-ray absorbtion near edge structure (XANES) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments. The branching ratio for the [Formula: see text] edge transitions of uranium, and the valence spin-orbit interaction per hole were …

Orbital Current Pumping From Ultrafast Light-driven Antiferromagnetic Insulator.

The orbital Hall effect originating from light materials with weak spin-orbit coupling, has attracted considerable interest in spintronic applications. Recent studies demonstrate that orbital currents can be generated from charge currents through the orbital Hall effect in ferromagnetic materials. However, the generation of orbital currents in antiferromagnets has so far been elusive. In this work, this is experimentally observed that the generation of orbital currents from orbital dynamics in the antiferromagnetic insulator α-Fe2O3 via terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy, a phenomenon known…

Conservative or surgical management of orbital schwannomas: a population-based case series.

INTRODUCTION: Orbital schwannomas (OS) are rare occurrences with no more than 500 cases reported in the literature. The tumor's potential to compromise the delicate neuro-ophthalmic structures within the orbit prompts surgical removal. Tumor removal is performed by ophthalmologists, often requiring a multidisciplinary surgical approach. The literature contains a very limited number of cases managed non-surgically. However, the inherent risks of orbital surgery warrant a comparison of the outcomes of conservative and surgical management strategies. AIMS: To review the national Swedish experien…

Neurological and orbital complication of acute sinusitis in pediatric patient: A case report.

Sinusitis is a common condition that can lead to various neurological complications due to the spread of infection to the intracranial and orbital regions. Fortunately, the availability of antibiotics has significantly improved the prognosis of sinusitis-associated intracranial complications. As a result, the overall incidence of neurological complications arising from sinusitis remains low. We present a rare case of a 13-year-old male who developed epidural empyema and orbital cellulitis as a complication of acute sinusitis. The patient initially exhibited signs and symptoms of orbital cellul…

Rate of metallic foreign bodies found on orbital radiographs prior to MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research is to more precisely quantify the positivity rate for conventional radiographs (CR) of the orbit performed for the purpose of pre-MR screening in patients at risk of having a radio-opaque orbital foreign body (ROFB). METHODS: By review of electronic medical records, we identified 47,237 patients who had undergone orbital CR for clearance of ROFB prior to MRI. The reports from these examinations were manually reviewed, and the examinations with positive findings were re-interpreted by a CAQ-certified head and neck radiologist. The rate of ROFB found in t…

Orbital-Selective Mott Transition Effects and Nontrivial Topology of Iron Chalcogenide.

The iron-based superconductor FeSe_{1-x}Te_{x} has recently gained significant attention as a host of two distinct physical phenomena: (i) Majorana zero modes that can serve as potential topologically protected qubits, and (ii) a realization of the orbital-selective Mott transition. In this Letter, we connect these two phenomena and provide new insights into the interplay between strong electronic correlations and nontrivial topology in FeSe_{1-x}Te_{x}. Using linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW plus dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the topologically protected Dirac surface st…

Delayed orbital floor implant complications: Case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: Foreign body reaction to non-absorbable alloplastic orbital implants utilized for bony reconstruction are infrequently documented in the literature. We present the workup and surgical management of a giant cystic mass encapsulating a patient's alloplastic orbital implant, which was ultimately deemed to be a result of foreign body reaction. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old male patient with distant history of a right orbital floor fracture had undergone repair with the placement of a nylon foil implant. The patient presented twenty years later with progressive ipsilateral globe proptosis a…

Comprehensive Management of Pediatric Orbital Fractures: A Case Series and Review of Literature.

Orbital fractures in the pediatric population are rare. A trapdoor fracture is a special anatomic type of orbital fracture associated with herniation of orbital contents and entrapment of extraocular muscles entrapment with no signs of any soft tissue trauma. A delay in diagnosis can lead to a life-threatening condition known as oculocardiac reflex, characterized by nausea, vomiting, bradycardia, and syncope. Many authors recommend early surgical intervention, but some patients may delay for various reasons. We hereby represent three cases of orbital fracture to prevent long-term persistent di…
