White adipose tissue browning in critical illness: A review of the evidence, mechanisms and future perspectives.

Observational studies suggest better clinical outcomes following critical illness in patients with overweight and obesity (obesity paradox). An understanding of the morphologic, physiologic and metabolic changes in adipose tissue in critical illness may provide an explanation. Recent studies have demonstrated the transformation of white to brown-like adipocytes due to the "browning process," which has been of interest as a potential novel therapy in obesity during the last decade. The characteristics of the browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) include the appearance of smaller, multilocular …

Sleep disordered breathing in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To describe sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and its relationship with pulmonary function tests (PFTs). STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study examined diagnostic polysomnogram and PFT data of boys younger than 18 years with DMD and treated with steroids. Spirometry, respiratory muscle strength, body mass index (BMI), sleep architecture variables, and indices of SDB were analyzed. We examined the effect of PFT measures on the risk of each type of respiratory event using logistic regression and have reported results as OR (95% CI

Point-of-decision prompts to increase stair use. A systematic review update.

In 2000, the Guide to Community Preventive Services (Community Guide) completed a systematic review of the effectiveness of various approaches to increasing physical activity including informational, behavioral and social, and environmental and policy approaches. Among these approaches was the use of signs placed by elevators and escalators to encourage stair use. This approach was found to be effective based on sufficient evidence. Over the past 5 years the body of evidence of this intervention has increased substantially, warranting an updated review. This update was conducted on 16 peer-rev

Understanding Maternal Health Outcomes Among Latina Mothers of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: The Roles of Social Determinants and Sociocultural Contexts.

Latinx families of children with disabilities are at disproportionally high risk of adverse health outcomes, including overweight, obesity, and depression. Research on specific social determinants and sociocultural factors that impact their health remains limited. In this study, we examined how social determinants of health (SDOH) and sociocultural contexts are related to maternal health outcomes in a sample of 105 Latina mothers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the United States. Mothers were interviewed by phone or video conference call and were asked abo…

Undesired weight gain and associated healthcare outcomes among people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy.

Managing overall health beyond viral suppression, including weight gain, is essential for improving quality of life of people living with HIV (PLHIV). This cross-sectional, web-based survey collected data from PLHIV aged ≥18 years in the US, from February-June 2022. Bivariate and multivariable analyses identified factors associated with undesired weight gain in the past 12 months. Of 781 PLHIV who participated (median age 41 years; 52% overweight/ obese), 230 (29%) reported weight gain in the past 12 months, of which 172 (75%) experienced undesired weight gain. PLHIV with undesired weight gain…

Alanine aminotransferase as a risk marker for new-onset metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease.

In this editorial, we comment on the article by Chen et al. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a global public health burden whose incidence has risen concurrently with overweight and obesity. Given its detrimental health impact, early identification of at-risk individuals is crucial. MAFLD diagnosis is based on evidence of hepatic steatosis indicated by liver biopsy, imaging, or blood biomarkers, and one of the following conditions: Overweight/ obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or metabolic dysregulation. However, in large-scale epidemiological studies, liver bio…

Associations between body mass index, sleep-disordered breathing, brain structure, and behavior in healthy children.

Pediatric overweight/obesity can lead to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), abnormal neurological and cognitive development, and psychiatric problems, but the associations and interactions between these factors have not been fully explored. Therefore, we investigated the associations between body mass index (BMI), SDB, psychiatric and cognitive measures, and brain morphometry in 8484 children 9-11 years old using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development dataset. BMI was positively associated with SDB, and both were negatively correlated with cortical thickness in lingual gyrus and lateral orb…

Phenotyping children and adolescents with obesity using behavioral, psychological, and familial data.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective cohort study aimed to empirically derive phenotypes of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity. METHODS: Latent class analyses using Mplus were carried out in the Growing Up Today Study. Information on participants' weight status, disordered eating behaviors, body image and weight concerns, depressive symptoms, and pubertal timing, as well as and maternal weight status, were included in the latent class analyses, which were stratified by sex. Mixed-effects regression was used to examine associations of the obesity phenotypes with adult weight gain, bet…
