Restoration of Sight with Electronic Retinal Prostheses.

Retinal prostheses aim at restoring sight to patients blinded by atrophy of photoreceptors using electrical stimulation of the inner retinal neurons. Bipolar cells can be targeted using subretinal implants, and their responses are then relayed to the central visual pathways via the retinal neural network, preserving many features of natural signal processing. Epiretinal implants stimulate the output retinal layer-ganglion cells-and encode visual information directly in spiking patterns.Several companies and academic groups have demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the degenerate retina

Massive corneal edema treated with corneal cross-linking.

INTRODUCTION: Massive corneal edema disrupts the fine architecture of corneal stroma that guarantees its transparency, causing opacities that seriously impair clear vision and are usually solved by corneal transplant. Corneal cross-linking, a treatment developed to halt keratoconus progression, results in a loss of water and a compaction of corneal stroma. It might therefore be useful to improve the pathologic edematous condition of some corneas, ameliorating visual acuity and allowing more time for a surgical procedure of keratoplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six patients with visual impairing

Hydrophilic contact lenses in corneal disorders.

Hydrophilic 'bandage' lenses were fitted in 107 patients with corneal disorders not satisfactorily responding to conventional medical treatment. An over-all beneficial effect on both ocular discomfort, visual acuity and corneal disorder was found (P less than 0.002). Regarding each group separately only patients with bullous keratopathy and those with corneal ulcers achieved a significant reduction of ocular discomfort (P less than 0.002) and a significant improvement of visual acuity (P less than 0.05 - P less than 0.01). In bullous keratopathy corneal oedema was significantly reduced by conc
