The authors report five cases of pharyngeal tuberculosis seen over a period of one year and which were all, with one exception, surprise histological findings. Such histological findings were not always completely specific and the diagnosis was confirmed by a strongly positive tuberculin skin reaction, pulmonary disease and, above all, the elimination of symptoms and physical signs in less than 3 weeks under the influence of specific antituberculous therapy.

A documented scheme of the early development of the human vertebrae is presented. It is based on (1) reports of workers who personally studied staged human embryos, and (2) personal observations and confirmations. The necessity of studying staged embryos in order to determine the precise sequence of developmental events is stressed.

Main clinical symptoms are reviewed in the first part of the article. They consist in mental alertness disorder, motorial confusion and quite constantly in reflexes and abnormal movements due to brain stem lesion. The author reports on 22 cases. No correlation appears between prognosis and epileptiform seizures. Bertran's prognostical score has given contradictory indications. Neujan's criteria have not been very reliable to select treatment schedule. No correlation has been observed between biological data on the one hand and clinical symptoms as well as lethal evolution on the other hand.

The acetabular angle was measured by two independent observers in a consecutive series of 29 infants with idiopathic instability of the hip. The diagnosis was made at the age of 1 1/2 to 21 months, and was confirmed by arthrography. The average difference in the measurement values between the two observers was less than 2 degrees. A prolonged glucose load was administered to four patients with hypokalaemic periodic paralysis and four healthy control sujbects. In 54 patients with graft failure the changes of urine sodium concentration and of urinary enzyme activities (alanine aminopeptidase, AAP) were investigated. The analysis of cycles of periodic breathing (Cheyne-Stokes rhythms) in 35 patients showed wide variability of mean values of respiratory phases. The respiratory pauses are usually shorter and the scatter of the mean values is smaller. Only in four cases were respiratory pauses longer than respiratory phases. The duration of the respiratory phase becomes extended through the increase of number of single respirations. The latter also shows a very small scatter. The respiratory rate in 32 out of 35 patients was higher than normal and is to be considered as tachypnoea.

3 children who fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria of the classical Donath-Landsteiner type are described.
