Accessible assessment of motor and cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease: integrating large datasets, machine-learning, and videoconferencing.

In-person motor and cognitive assessments for Parkinson's disease(PD) face accessibility, scalability, and geographical diversity challenges. We aimed to address these by integrating large datasets, machine learning (ML), and videoconferencing. We developed the Motor and Cognitive Videoconference(MaC-VC) protocol, allowing non-experts to remotely administer the MDS-UPDRS III and MoCA tests. In this cross-sectional study, we administered MaC-VC to 145 participants from 60+ geographical locations and compared the results with a large (n = 1264), expert-rated, in-person assessments from the PPMI

Human Blood-Brain Tumor Barrier on a Chip to Investigate Personalized Treatment for Glioblastoma Patients.

The inherent characteristics of glioblastoma (GBM), including tumoral heterogeneity and invasive capacity, combined with the presence of the blood-brain tumor barrier (BBTB), present challenges in developing effective treatment for GBM. Especially, the margins of GBM, where GBM cells infiltrate normal brain tissue, exhibit high resistance to therapies. Despite the difficulties in controlling tumor progression within this region, the GBM margin remains a critical area to be studied. Here we report a microengineered model that mimics the BBTB within the GBM margin, incorporating a 3D network of

Bridging Coursework Knowledge to Audiology Clinical Practice: An Evidence-Based Approach to Counseling Education.

PURPOSE: Effective counseling is central to person-centered audiologic care. However, researchers have consistently demonstrated gaps in students' preparedness and confidence in providing counseling services. There is also variability in classroom counseling learning and the supervision they receive from their clinical preceptors. This warrants a more intentional, structured, and evidence-based counseling training program that can better bridge the gap between knowledge obtained in the coursework and the ability to provide effective counseling in clinical practice. This tutorial synthesized ev

Medical AI and Human Dignity: A Catholic Normative Ethical Framework in Light of Magnifica Humanitas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping healthcare through advances in prediction and personalization, yet these developments also raise questions that are not merely technical but also are moral and religious. This article offers a normative framework for Catholic engagement with medical AI in light of Leo XIV's Magnifica Humanitas (2026). Drawing on the encyclical's critique of the "Babel Syndrome," we argue that medical AI is dehumanizing in two principal ways: first, through an idolatry of optimization that reduces the person to a data source; and second, through an illusion of a

Link between caries, periodontitis, and pregnancy: The role of personalized oral hygiene.

Optimal health during pregnancy is crucial for ensuring the well-being of the mother and the developing fetus. This article is focused on the impact of oral health and the role of personalized oral hygiene management in addressing prevalent dental issues among pregnant women, with particular emphasis on periodontal disease and dental caries. Despite the high prevalence of these dental problems and their association with obstetric complications such as pre-term birth and low birth weight, many pregnant women do not receive adequate dental care. This gap in care is often due to misconceptions ab

The associations between optimism, personal growth initiative and the latent classes of social media addiction.

INTRODUCTION: Most previous studies have explored the risk antecedents of social media addiction, while few studies have focused on the protective factors that may decrease the risk of this behavioral disorder. By using a person-centered method, the current study focused on the effects of two protective factors (optimism and personal growth initiative) on the latent classes of social media addiction. METHODS: 552 college students (248 females) participated in the current study, Mplus 8.3 software was adopted to conduct the latent class analysis. RESULTS: The results revealed that based on th

Fluorinated Graphene-Coated N95 Respirators for Enhanced Protection Against Viral Accumulation and Transmission.

Highly contagious respiratory infection diseases such as COVID-19 can be transmitted by inhaling virus laden liquid droplets and short-range aerosols, released by an infected person. Particularly, in hospitals, spraying of the respiratory droplets containing pathogens from the conjunctiva or mucus of a susceptible person plays a key role in transferring the infectious diseases. N95 filtering respirators are a critical personal protective equipment. However, due to concerns over the virus accumulation on the N95 respirators, there is an urgent need to make the N95 respirators less contaminated.

Experiences of a peer group for people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder: A qualitative interview study.

There is a notable lack of literature evaluating peer support for people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Peer-led groups have been shown to positively impact outcomes related to empowerment, hope, and self-efficacy beliefs for consumers diagnosed with serious mental illness and may also be a helpful option for those experiencing personality disorder symptoms. We outline the coproduction of a peer group for people with a lived experience of BPD and a qualitative analysis of feedback post-group participation. Twenty-two consumers participated in post-group interviews a

The Promises of Proteomics and Metabolomics for Unravelling the Mechanism and Side Effect Landscape of Beta-Adrenoceptor Antagonists in Cardiovascular Therapeutics.

Cardiovascular medicine witnessed notable advances for the past decade. Multiomics research offers a new lens for precision/personalized medicine for existing and emerging drugs used in the cardiovascular clinic. Beta-blockers are vital in treating hypertension and chronic heart failure. However, clinical use of beta-blockers is also associated with side effects and person-to-person variations in their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that underpin the side effect landscape of beta-blockers is imperative to optimize their therapeutic value.

Identifying people requiring special care dentistry: A scoping review.

AIMS: This scoping review aimed to document tools designed to identify persons requiring special care dentistry (SCD) and to provide a better understanding of the factors that justify adaptation in the provision of care. METHODS: A scoping review methodology was applied. An electronic search was performed in April 2021 using Pubmed and Embase. Additional tools were sought using hand searches and informal professional networking. RESULTS: Ten tools were identified that either predict the complexity of dental management or that retrospectively judge the complexity of care, of which two are as

Physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services: the social systems constraining an innovative practice.

BACKGROUND: A person-centered and collaborative practice is considered crucial in contemporary physiotherapy. These ideals are often embraced in theory but are difficult to put into practice. As problems and solutions are related, understanding and refining theory on practical problems can close the knowing-doing gap and link the problem to the development of possible solutions. OBJECTIVE: To explore the challenges with providing physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services. METHODS: This article reports on an all-day interactive workshop with eight focu

Psychopathic Personality as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Atypical Sexuality and Sexual Coercion Proclivity in the General Population.

Being sexually coerced can have long-lasting psychological impacts on victims; with perpetration strongly predicted by elevated psychopathic traits. Owing to recent legislative developments in the United Kingdom that criminalize coercive control under the Domestic Abuse Act (2021), this study offers a timely investigation into the mechanisms of sexual coercion in domestic abuse across sexual abuse and coercive control. We used moderation analysis (n = 405) to investigate whether sexual coercion proclivity was predicted by facets of atypical sexuality (non-clinical elevated levels of sex drive,

International Virtual Simulation Education in Critical Care During COVID-19 Pandemic: Preliminary Description of the Virtual Checklist for Early Recognition and Treatment of Acute Illness and iNjury Program.

The Checklist for Early Recognition and Treatment of Acute Illness and iNjury program is a well-established, interactive, and simulation-based program designed to improve the quality of care delivered in intensive care units. The COVID-19 pandemic created an overwhelming surge of critically ill patients worldwide, and infection control concerns limited healthcare providers' access to in-person and hands-on simulation training when they needed it the most. Virtual simulation offers an alternative to in-person training but is often complex and expensive. We describe our successful development an

Economic evaluation of E-health interventions compared with alternative treatments in older persons' care: A systematic review.

Population aging has increased the need for long-term care of older persons who suffer from multi-morbidity and chronic conditions. Today, the majority of older people are living alone in their home in which they try to cope with highly risky conditions such as sensory impairment, diminished mobility, and medication management. Recent developments in information technologies could improve the access to care for older people as well as reducing the need for full-time caregivers both in homes and institutions such as nursery homes and hospitals. This study aimed to review the economic evaluation

Enhancing Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy with ecological momentary interventions: A pilot trial.

OBJECTIVE: Although current treatments are effective for some patients with eating disorders, a large number of patients remain partially or fully symptomatic post-treatment. This may be related to poor utilization of treatment skills outside of the therapy office. Smartphone applications that can detect and intervene during moments of need could facilitate such skill use between sessions. METHOD: Individuals (N = 16) participated in a small pilot open trial where they received 21 sessions of in-person Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy (ICAT) therapy an app (iCAT+) that delivers ecologi

Spinal cord stimulation for the restoration of bladder function after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in the inability to empty the bladder voluntarily, and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) negatively impact both the health and quality of life of persons with SCI. Current approaches to treat bladder dysfunction in persons with SCI, including self-catheterisation and anticholinergic medications, are inadequate, and novel approaches are required to restore continence with increased bladder capacity, as well as to provide predictable and efficient on-demand voiding. Improvements in bladder function following SCI have

The emergence of clause construction in children who use speech generating devices.

This study aimed to detect patterns in clause construction structural changes produced by four participants aged 9;5-13;7 (years;months) with motor speech disorders who used speech-generating devices. Sequences of adult-child interactions, drawn from the data of a larger study focused on enhancing vocabulary and grammar skills, were examined. This current study comprises a secondary analysis of a corpus of 29 conversations totalling 808.36 min, analysing clause structures by type, linguistic complexity, and intensity of adult prompts (number of turns). Results show that, over time, the partici

Increased Risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Patients With Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Retrospective Cohort Study (Version 5).

Studies evaluating the risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are limited. We used insurance claims data of Taiwan to establish a cohort of 6590 patients with AAA newly diagnosed from 2000 to 2008 and 6590 controls without AAA matched by propensity score. The subsequent incidence density rates of PAD were estimated in both cohorts by the end of 2011, and the AAA cohort to the non-AAA cohort hazard ratios (HRs) of PAD were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models. The incidence density of PAD in the AAA cohort was 3.7-fold greater than

Therapies for mobility disability in persons with multiple sclerosis.

Mobility disability is one of the most widespread and impactful consequences of multiple sclerosis (MS). Disease modifying drugs (DMDs) may delay the progression of disability over time; however, there is minimal evidence supporting the efficacy of DMDs for reversing mobility disability or restoring ambulatory function in persons with MS. Areas covered: This review outlines symptomatic pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutic approaches that target mobility disability with the goal of restoring and improving walking function. First, the efficacy of dalfampridine, currently the only Food
