BACKGROUND: Factors associated with the grief process in response to perinatal loss have been investigated. However, few studies focused on the intrapersonal factors, such as developmental and personality traits. Hence, this study aimed to investigate medical and psychosocial risk factors, including inter- and intrapersonal factors for the development of complicated grief following perinatal loss, while considering emotional support.
METHODS: A total of 50 patients who were treated for grief due to perinatal loss at the National Center for Child Health and Development were divided into two gr

Recent literature examining associations between cognitive function, clinical features, and violence in patients with schizophrenia has been growing; however, the results are inconsistent. Reports on social function and personality are limited. These studies are yet to be reflected in risk assessment tools and management plans. The aim of this study is to provide a resource for risk assessment and intervention studies by conducting multifaceted well-established assessments in a large population. Data from 355 patients with schizophrenia (112 patients with a history of violence; 243 patients wi

BACKGROUND: Healthy functioning relies on a variety of perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral abilities that are distributed throughout the normal population. Variation in these traits define the wide range of neurodevelopmental (NDD) and neuropsychiatric (NPD) disorders. Here, we introduce a new measure for assessing these traits in typically developing children and children at risk for NDD and NPD from age 2 to 18 years.
METHOD: The Childhood Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (CO-LIFE) was created as a dimensional, parent-report measure of schizotypal and psyc

BACKGROUND: Perceived harmfulness of substances is a key concept of behavioural theories that have been used to explain substance use behaviours. However, perceptions of risk associated with substance use have rarely been examined among people with psychotic disorders. This study examined the relationship between perceived harm and patterns of substance use among people with and without psychotic disorders. It also aimed to identify the factors that may be associated with perceived harmfulness of tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use among these populations.

The study aimed to examine the association of impulsivity and screening positively for borderline personality disorder (BPD+) as risk factors for suicide attempts among opioid-dependent individuals. The study used a case-control design with 775 opioid-dependent cases and 306 non-opioid-dependent controls. Cases were more likely than controls to screen BPD+ and to be classed as highly impulsive. Significant risk for lifetime suicide attempt was associated with screening BPD+ and also with high impulsivity. A number of risk factors were identified for suicide attempts among those with either hig

BACKGROUND: Neurobiological findings and clinical data suggest that dissociative experience inhibits conditioning processes, but experimental studies are lacking. The aim of our study was to determine whether high states of dissociative experience would specifically alter emotional learning, but not declarative knowledge.
METHODS: We used an aversive differential delay conditioning procedure in 33 unmedicated patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and 35 healthy controls.
RESULTS: Patients with BPD who had high state dissociative experiences (BPD D+) showed diminished acquisitio

There have been no detailed descriptions of psychiatric patients who have died by suicide pact. We examined the social and clinical characteristics of pact cases in England and Wales using a national clinical survey sample of people who died by suicide pact and who had been in recent (<12 months) contact with mental health services. Over the study period (1996-2005), there were 278 cases of suicide who had died in a pact, 77 (28%) of whom had been in recent service contact. The most common cause of death overall was by carbon monoxide poisoning, but those in contact with services were more lik

We assessed psychological and somatoform dissociation and their relationships in the general population. The study questionnaires included the Dissociative Experiences Scale, the Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and background characteristics. Four study groups were formed: subjects with low dissociation scores (N = 1334), with high psychological dissociation (N = 93), with high somatoform dissociation (N = 93), and with high psychological and somatoform dissociation (N = 65). Those with high psychological and somatoform dissociation differed clearly from t

OBJECTIVE: Meeting criterion A2 for the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in DSM-IV requires that an individual have high levels of distress during or after the traumatic event. Because of the paucity of valid and reliable instruments for assessing such responses, the authors developed a 13-item self-report measure, the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory, to obtain a quantitative measure of the level of distress experienced during and immediately after a traumatic event.

BackgroundMultiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated neurological disorder, and up to 50% of patients experience depression. We investigated how white matter network disruption is related to depression in MS.MethodsUsing electronic health records, 380 participants with MS were identified. Depressed individuals (MS+Depression group; n = 232) included persons who had an ICD-10 depression diagnosis, had a prescription for antidepressant medication, or screened positive via Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-2 or PHQ-9. Age- and sex-matched nondepressed individuals with MS (MS-Depression group;

Several personality disorders have been associated with cognitive impairment, including executive functions like working memory. Yet, it is unclear whether subclinical expression in non-clinical persons is associated with cognitive functioning. Recent studies indicate that non-clinical subjects might, in fact, perform better with increasing moderate to mild expressions of narcissistic features. We tested working memory performance in a cohort of n=70 psychiatrically and neurologically healthy subjects using Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS/WIE) subtests Arithmetic, Digit Span and Letter

Previous studies have indicated associations between a functional biallelic repetitive element in the 5' regulatory region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) and alcoholic subjects who have either dissocial personality disorder or severe withdrawal symptoms. To replicate these associations under the hypothesis that genetic polymorphism plays some role in the susceptibility or vulnerability of some subgroup of alcoholics, the associations between alcoholic subjects' genetic polymorphisms, clinical characteristics, and personality traits were examined. This case control study comprised

Irregular discharges, previously studied on psychiatric or substance abuse treatment units, are a particular problem for dual diagnosis units. We examined demographic and clinical variables for their association with irregular discharge from an acute dual diagnosis inpatient unit, retrospectively reviewing 316 consecutive admissions. One hundred and nineteen patients (37.7%) were irregularly discharged (61 AMA, 31 administrative, 27 elopements), staying an average of 18.8 days compared with 51.4 days for those regularly discharged (p < .001). Younger age (p = .007) and discharge diagnosis of a

BACKGROUND: Driver-associated factors are significant contributors to road traffic accidents. Conversely, personality traits are the characteristics and qualities that define an individual's consistent patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Driving behavior is influenced by a variety of factors. We hypothesized that different personality traits may affect driving behavior. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between various personality traits and involvement in accidents.
METHODS: Drivers with a history of accidents resulting in injuries for which they were at fault were

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PD) are associated with personality beliefs (PBs). Childhood traumas (CTs) and emotional intelligence (EI) are effective in the development of PDs. However, the relationships between CTs and EI and PBs are not well known. This study examined the effects of CTs and EI on PBs. METHOD: Three hundred and eighty-seven university students who applied to the psychiatry clinic and did not receive any psychiatric diagnosis according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria were recruited for the study. OBJECTIVES: Several lines of evidence suggest that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in weight regulation and eating behaviors as well as in the activity-dependent neuroplasticity underlying learning and memory behaviors involving the hippocampus. In anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, abnormal serum BDNF concentrations, cognitive impairments and specific personality traits have been traditionally observed. This study explores the levels of four serum neurotrophins [BDNF, neurotrophin 3 (NTF3), neurotrophin 4 (NTF4) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GD

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of social comparison for body dissatisfaction in bulimia nervosa (BN). Previous research suggested that exposure to media content idealizing thin body shape decreases body satisfaction, particularly in women with eating disorder symptoms. This might be due to the negative outcome of social comparisons with media models, and women with eating disorders might be particularly susceptible because they engage in upward social comparison more frequently than women without these symptoms. However, no study has yet explored both upward (i.e., toward more attractive oth

The goal of this paper is to draw conclusions about the usefulness of the standard EEG in psychiatry. In general, two thirds of psychiatric referrals for an EEG are expected to provide useful information. The emphasis in schizophrenia is placed on left-sided abnormalities, especially on the left temporal area. In mood disorders the emphasis is on right-sided foci, in addition to the controversial 6/sec spike and wave complexes, small sharp spikes and positive spikes. In the acute stage of alcoholism, a relationship is seen between the degree of intoxication and the amount of slow activity, whi

OBJECTIVES: The present study analyzed the polymorphism of the dopamine receptor gene DRD4, which is widely described in the literature as being associated with sensation seeking. Gambling disorder (GD) shares similar biological mechanisms and symptoms with substance use disorders (SUD). Therefore, a behavioral addiction group was selected for this study. During the research and recruitment process, it was revealed that all individuals undergoing treatment for gambling addiction were also addicted to amphetamine, which aligns with the biological mechanism related to brain neurotransmission.
