Although the gastrointestinal and systemic features of Behcet's syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease overlap to a considerable extent, they are generally viewed as two distinct diseases. We evaluated three members of a family who have inflammatory bowel lesions, two of whom met criteria for Behcet's syndrome. The propositus had classic features of both Crohn's ileocolitis and Behcet's syndrome. A daughter, who never met criteria for Behcet's syndrome, had undergone colectomy for ulcerative colitis. The diagnosis of acute knee injuries should be as precise as possible. A wait-and-see attitude is condemned. A complete diagnosis cannot always be made on the basis of history, physical examination and x-rays. Additional aids, such as stress films, joint aspiration, arthrography, examination under anesthesia and arthroscopy, increase diagnostic accuracy to nearly 100 percent. Only then can the physician properly manage the patient so that long-term disability is minimized.

Unstable newborns are often subjected to multiple diagnostic tests and then treated presumptively for bacterial infection. Inconclusive test results may perpetuate unnecessary therapy. Use of lumbar spine films was evaluated in a retrospective review of 1,095 lumbar radiological examinations in 871 patients. Patients' histories and physical examination findings were correlated with four groups of radiological findings: (1) radiologically normal, (2) incidental findings unrelated to patients' complaints, (3) diagnostic films compatible with symptoms, and (4) radiological findings of questionable clinical significance.
