BACKGROUND: Surgeons pursuing improvement in the aesthetic outcomes of their cleft lip repairs may benefit from a granular scale evaluating individual objectives of the repair.
METHODS: A working group of 9 surgeons convened to develop an assessment scale for nasolabial aesthetics after unilateral cleft lip repair. The group identified objectives of the repair that could be evaluated using two-dimensional facial photographs. Scale items were developed to appraise success or failure in achieving each objective. Scale items were iteratively tested and refined. The scale was subsequently impleme

Scars resulting from surgical repair of cleft lip and palate provide a unique model in humans for studying factors that affect the severity of scarring. Anatomically, clefts of the lip and palate are consistent in location and are treated surgically with similar methods and timing. This contrasts with the considerably greater variability observed in traumatic injuries, burns or emergency surgical procedures and the scars resulting from these cause tissue damage. Clinical audit protocols for cleft lip and palate ensure that data on outcomes for appearance, function and wellbeing are collected a

Improving exophthalmos is a crucial aspect of treatment for patients with syndromic craniosynostosis. However, in patients who have undergone previous treatments including fronto-orbital advancement and Le Fort III distraction osteogenesis and who have reached skeletal maturity, the recurrence of exophthalmos is not uncommon. The severity of the exophthalmos may vary. Whether secondary correction involving osteotomy should be performed or symptomatic treatment strategies should be adopted is a dilemma, and the patient's symptoms and background and the invasiveness of the surgery should also be

The Tessier number 7 cleft is a rare congenital anomaly making up between 0.3% and 1.0% facial clefts. When combined with a concomitant unilateral cleft lip deformity, we are only aware of 1 previously reported case. We report the presentation, treatment course and long-term follow-up of 3 patients with combined Tessier number 7 cleft, unilateral cleft lip and craniofacial microsomia. All patients received multidisciplinary treatment at our Craniofacial Centre with a minimum follow-up of 29 years. This study demonstrates the phenotype, treatment philosophy, lessons learnt, and principles of re

Acute lower limb trauma with bone loss is an uncommon occurrence. Injuries of this nature typically result from high-energy trauma and can result in significant functional impairment, with the potential for amputation.Nonetheless, it is recommended that salvage reconstructive procedures be attempted whenever feasible in the context of an emergency and even in cases of severe injury. Good outcomes may be achieved with creative solutions, as illustrated by this rare and particular case.We present an acute reconstructive solution involving the transposition of a foot ray and interposition of an a

The pedicled groin flap is a valuable and versatile option for covering wounds on the hand and distal forearm, offering predictable results with a procedure that is less complex and time-consuming than free-tissue transfer. Contrary to the common belief that the groin flap should be avoided in elderly patients due to the risk of shoulder stiffness, we observed satisfactory outcomes in a 93-year-old woman with comorbidities of type 2 DM, Arterial hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis and status post Hip TEP on both sides in 2009 and 2007. INTRODUCTION: Nerve grafting with the sural nerve is a standard treatment method for radial nerve injury that requires another incision at the lateral ankle distal from the injured upper limb. The aim of this study was to investigate the common trunk (CTCB) of the inferior lateral brachial cutaneous nerve (ILBCN) and posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve (PACN) as a possible donor inside the lateral intermuscular septum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The arms and legs of 8 formalin-embalmed cadaver specimens were studied. The radial nerve, common trunk of the ILBCN and PACN, and the sural nerve wer

<b>Introduction:</b> Traumatic detachment of the lateral abdominal muscle group from the iliac crest occurs as a result of the acceleration mechanism when the body impacts a seatbelt during a head-on collision of motor vehicles. Due to the rare and variable nature of such defects, a standard treatment protocol has not yet been developed. As a result, the surgical technique and timing of the procedure are always planned individually. The optimal surgical method and type of implant for such cases remain undetermined. Given the anatomical location of the defect, surgical intervention

This study explores the efficacy of superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) using fascia lata autograft for treating irreparable rotator cuff tears. Based on our experience and existing literature, SCR has demonstrated promising outcomes, offering improved shoulder stability, reduced pain, and prevention of humeral head migration. Patients undergoing SCR with fascia lata autograft achieved near-normal shoulder range of motion postoperatively, with maintained acromio-humeral distance observed in radiographic follow-ups. Various graft modifications, including the use of dermal grafts and the long

In this article, a new modification technique is described to reconstruct large bone defects of the distal radius after en bloc giant cell tumor resection with a proximal vascularized fibula graft. We discuss anatomic landmarks during graft harvest as well as reconstructive considerations. We aim for a durable reconstruction with optimal mobility and, therefore, introduce a fibular-scaphoid-lunate fusion with a reconstruction of the distal fibula-ulnar joint with an "Adams-Berger-like" procedure with a palmaris longus tendon. The clinical results of 3 patients who underwent this procedure were

The development of bone adhesives capable of restoring natural bone structure and function represents a pioneering advancement in surgical technology, offering significant potential to improve the treatment outcomes of comminuted fractures. However, the development of a clinically demand-driven adhesive, ensuring both reliable adhesion and osteogenic activity, poses a significant challenge. Herein, a structurally and functionally dual-biomimetic bone adhesive is developed through the design of an organic-inorganic network-enhanced hydrogel, which integrates caffeic acid-grafted collagen (CAC),

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction using a megaprosthesis is the primary method for treating long segmental bone tumors in the extremities following resection. However, conventional stem (CS) prostheses fail to provide stable fixation in the metaphysis. To improve prosthetic fixation in the proximal femoral metaphysis, in a previous study, we proposed a novel triangular fixation stem (TFS) design. The purpose of the present study was to use the finite element analysis (FEA) method to compare biomechanical properties of models of the TFS and CS prostheses for ultrashort residual proximal femur (URPF) r

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common primary bone malignancies, typically occurring around the knee. However, the forearm is a rare site, with tumors in the proximal ulna being extremely uncommon. Primary sarcoma in this location presents a surgical challenge due to the complex anatomy and limited reconstructive options. We report a rare case of a 19-year-old female with non-metastatic, high-grade giant cell-rich osteosarcoma involving the right proximal ulna. To our knowledge, this is only the second reported adult case of this histological subtype in this location. The patient was treated

Malignant tumors of the distal tibia are rare and pose unique reconstructive challenges due to the region's complex anatomical and biomechanical characteristics. Contemporary treatment has progressively shifted from amputation to limb salvage. We believe that a favorable histologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and the absence of major neurovascular involvement are key prerequisites for successful limb salvage. Amputation is generally considered a salvage option when limb salvage fails. In adults, we typically favor biological reconstruction combined with ankle arthrodesis as the first-

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia is the most prevalent form of skeletal dysplasia and is characterized by rhizomelia, short stature, and distinctive facial features. Achondroplasia is frequently accompanied by spinal canal stenosis because of the distinctive morphology of the spine. For pediatric lumbar spinal canal stenosis, a meticulously constructed surgical plan is needed to prevent complications such as the development of thoracolumbar kyphosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old Asian boy with achondroplasia presented with bilateral lower limb numbness and intermittent claudication, which limi

Objective: To investigate the feasibility and safety of modified interposed jejunal anastomosis following total laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy. Methods: The modification in the digestive tract reconstruction involves transecting the small intestine 2-3 cm below the gastrojejunostomy site and relocating the enteroenterostomy cranially, based on the double-tract anastomosis technique. Specifically, the jejunum and its mesenteric vessels are transected 20-25 cm from the ligament of Treitz. An overlap anastomosis is performed between the esophagus and the distal jejunum, with the common opening

Urethral reconstruction remains a challenge. Indeed, the use of oral mucosa, the reference biomaterial for urethroplasty, is associated with two main drawbacks: the limited availability of autologous tissues and potential short- and long-term complications, especially for patients with recurrences or severe anomalies. Therefore, the development of alternative approaches, such as urethral tissue engineering, is necessary. A new type of human urethral substitute devoid of exogenous biomaterials has been reconstructed in vitro. It presented sufficient mechanical strength and had histological and
