Molecular subtyping methods for Listeria monocytogenes.

Conventional, phenotypic, and DNA-based subtyping methods allow differentiation of Listeria monocytogenes beyond the species and subspecies level. Bacterial subtyping methods not only improve our ability to detect and track human listeriosis outbreaks, but also provide tools to track sources of L. monocytogenes contamination throughout the food system. The use of subtyping methods also provides an opportunity to better understand the population genetics, epidemiology, and ecology of L. monocytogenes. The last 5 years have seen tremendous advancements in the development of sensitive, rapid, aut

Suicidal behavior in children and adolescents with developmental disorders.

Children and adolescents with developmental disorders exhibit a wide range of self-destructive behaviors. Interestingly, suicidal ideation and gestures have been underreported in this population. This study was designed to examine suicidality in a clinically referred sample. The medical records of all individuals assessed in a specialized program during a 1-year period were reviewed looking at the incidence, the type and the clinical characteristics of any suicidal behavior. Forty-seven patients (20%) experienced either suicidal ideation, threats, or attempts with hanging being the most freque

Nasal carriage of enterotoxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus among restaurant workers in Kuwait City.

Enterotoxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of staphylococcal food poisoning. To determine the incidence of carriage of enterotoxin-producing S. aureus in a sample of the healthy population in Kuwait city, restaurant workers in the city were screened for nasal carriage of S. aureus. 26.6% of 500 workers studied carried S. aureus and 86.6% of the S. aureus produced staphylococcal enterotoxins. 28% produced enterotoxin A, 28.5% produced enterotoxin B, 16.4% produced enterotoxin C and 3.5% produced enterotoxin D. Ten isolates produced both enterotoxins A and B or A and C. 73% of

Analysis of worm burden variation in human Schistosoma mansoni infections by determination of serum levels of circulating anodic antigen and circulating cathodic antigen.

Serum circulating anodic antigen (CAA) and circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) concentrations, as a possible direct measure of worm burden, were compared with fecal egg counts in a heavily Schistosoma mansoni-infected population from Zaire to allow differentiation between worm loads and worm fecundity in relation to age and intensity of infection. Of the 517 subjects, 95% excreted eggs and 97% demonstrated circulating antigens. Fecal egg counts showed an age-related pattern characteristic for an area in which schistosomiasis is endemic with intense transmission levels. Regression analysis showe

Prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis C virus and other markers in Jamaica.

Three population groups, 1500 blood donors, 513 antenatal women representing a normal population group and 250 sicklers representing a multiply transfused group were studied to determine the prevalence of hepatitis C viral (HCV) infection in Jamaica. The relationship to liver enzyme levels, hepatitis B infection, syphilis and HIV infection was also investigated. Sera were screened by enzyme-linked immunoassay (EIA) for anti-HCV C100-3 and subsequently tested by a supplementary second generation recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA). In the blood donors, the prevalence of anti-HCV was low, 0.3%-0…

Eradication of poliomyelitis in Bulgaria--problem encountered.

The authors analyze the effectiveness of the National Vaccination Programme with regard to poliomyelitis eradication in Bulgaria and the difficulties encountered in the 1980s and at the beginning of the 1990s. An account is presented on the eradication achieved, interrupted by an outbreak of 46 cases in 1991. The critical analysis points out the negative influence of several factors, disrupted by the failure in 1991. Based on these fact conclusions are drawn on a prolongation of the period needed to achieve the Eradication Programme goal. The main reasons for the delay are as follows: the inte

Combined substance abuse and psychiatric disorders in homeless and domiciled patients.

Although homelessness in patients with combined addictive and psychiatric illness is a common problem, little has been reported about the epidemiology of homelessness in this patient population. The authors, in a study of 100 dually diagnosed patients admitted to a large metropolitan psychiatric hospital, found that a large portion of patients (N = 46) were homeless at the time of admission. Alcohol and crack/cocaine were the most frequently used drugs. Interestingly, there were no significant differences on most parameters between those who were homeless and those who were not. The authors ob

The prevalence of osteoarthrosis in a rural African community.

Osteoarthrosis occurs in all population groups throughout the world. However, the pattern of the condition may differ considerably amongst various developing, traditionally living people, perhaps because of their different living habits, occupational factors and genetics. The distribution and prevalence of osteoarthrosis in a developing African population are reported in this paper. A radiological survey of the hands and feet of 543 adult respondents was undertaken. The prevalence of multiple osteoarthrosis and Heberden's nodes was very low. There was a sharp rise in the prevalence of osteoart…

Correlation between population density and the frequency of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in France.

Epidemiologic studies of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in countries throughout the world have consistently shown higher urban than nationa … density and the frequency of CJD is not explained by differences in age distribution of the various population groups, and suggests a role for random inter-human spread, either direct or indirect, in natural disease transmission.

Diabetes mellitus among first- and second-degree relatives of early onset diabetics.

This study is based on a material consisting of all first-degree relatives and a group of second-degree relatives (all nieces and nephews) of 187 propositi affected by early onset (i.e. at or prior to 20 years of age) diabetes mellitus, diagnosed before 1946. The incidence of diabetes among the different groups of relatives is expressed as the risk of developing the disease at specified ages. It is concluded that the risk of siblings or children of early-onset diabetics developing the same disease is about ten times that of a normal population chosen for comparison, whereas the risk of sibling

Burden, Patterns and Challenges of Cancer Among Tribal Communities in India.

Cancer poses a growing public health challenge in India, which ranks third globally in incidence and is projected to see a 57.5% increase by 2040. Despite this, Population-Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs) cover only 0.1% of India's rural population, limiting data on marginalized groups, especially tribal communities. As per the Indian constitution "tribal" are identified as "Scheduled Tribes" recognized for taking protective measures for theses marginalized group. Representing 8.6% of the national population, indigenous population formally called "tribal" populations face rising, often underrep

Chloral Hydrate versus Isofluorane anesthesia and their differential impact on the midbrain system.

BACKGROUND: Isoflurane (ISO) has become one of the most commonly used anesthetics for animal surgery, has largely replaced chloral hydrate (CH). Despite this shift, the physiological consequences of these anesthetics on dopamine neuron (DA) function have not been directly compared. This is particularly relevant for DA neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a critical network involved in reward and motivation. NEW METHOD: In this study, we compared the electrophysiological properties of VTA DA neurons under CH and ISO anesthesia in male and female rats. Extracellular recordings were used

Advanced MDCT assessment of abdominal aortic wall integrity and morphometry in the Saudi cohort: A single-centre cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate reference values for abdominal aortic dimensions and wall thickness are crucial for the early detection and management of vascular diseases, particularly abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). However, there is a lack of population-specific normative data for the Saudi population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 347 adults [111 males, 236 females] aged 20-80 at King Fahad Medical City. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) was utilised to measure the abdominal aortic lumen area, diameter, and wall thickness at three standard anatomical levels. Pixel-based
