Contactless surface registration of featureless anatomy using structured light camera: application to fibula navigation in mandible reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Mandibular reconstruction using fibula free flap is a challenging surgical procedure. To assist osteotomies, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) can be used. Nevertheless, precise registration is required and often necessitates anchored markers that disturb the patient and clinical flow. This work proposes a new contactless surface-based method adapted to featureless anatomies such as fibula to achieve a fast, precise, and reproducible registration. METHODS: Preoperatively, a CT-scan of the patient is realized and osteotomies are virtually planned. During surgery, a structured light came

Dry Chemistry-Based Bipolar Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay Device for Point-of-Care Testing of Alzheimer-Associated Neuronal Thread Protein.

In this study, we developed, for the first time, a novel dry chemistry-based bipolar electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay device for point-of-care testing (POCT) of Alzheimer-associated neuronal thread protein (AD7c-NTP), where the ECL signals were automatically collected and analyzed after the sample and buffer solutions were manually added onto the immunosensor. The proposed immunoassay device contains an automatic ECL analyzer and a dry chemistry-based ECL immunosensor fabricated with a screen-printed fiber material-based chip and a three-dimensional (3D)-printed shell. Removable complete denture with a metal base: Integration of digital design and conventional fabrication techniques.

OBJECTIVE: Digitally-designed removable complete dentures are typically composed of a resin denture base without a metal framework. However, metal denture bases are preferable as resin bases are more susceptible to fracture. Therefore, this article introduces a unique technique that integrates computer-aided design (CAD) and conventional resin processing for the fabrication of removable complete dentures with a metal framework. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A maxillary complete denture with a metal base and a mandibular implant-retained overdenture reinforced with a metal framework were fabricated

[The Well-informed Patient: a Survey on Patients' Initiative in Seeking Disease-related Information].

Internet and print media are frequently used by laypersons to learn about health issues. The objective of this study was to find out whether people with mental disorders showed a special pattern of usage. Where and why do they seek for information about their disorder? How do they experience their search? In semi-standardized interviews, we surveyed 200 psychiatric inpatients. Only patients of the following diagnostic groups were included: 1. Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders (F20-F29), 2. Affective disorders (F30-F39) and 3. Disorders of adult personality and behavior (F60-F

Surgical Margins in 3D Planned Mandibular Resections for Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Oral Cavity.

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional (3D) planned mandibular resections using cutting guides and preplanned plates are now widely used in oncological surgery. The main advantages are the gain of time, precision, and esthetic outcomes. The drawbacks include costs, time for planning, and printing the surgical tools. This time between the radiological data and the surgery may allow tumor progression, rendering the custom-made guides useless. There is no consensus regarding surgical margins that should be planned to ensure a safe oncologic outcome. The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate if t…

Bidirectional Differentiation of Human-Derived Stem Cells Induced by Biomimetic Calcium Silicate-Reinforced Gelatin Methacrylate Bioink for Odontogenic Regeneration.

Tooth loss or damage is a common problem affecting millions of people worldwide, and it results in significant impacts on one's quality of life. Dental regeneration with the support of stem cell-containing scaffolds has emerged as an alternative treatment strategy for such cases. With this concept in mind, we developed various concentrations of calcium silicate (CS) in a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMa) matrix and fabricated human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs)-laden scaffolds via the use of a bioprinting technology in order to determine their feasibility in promoting odontogenesis. The X-ray dif…

The "Shiny and Thick High Heel Sign" : A novel radiologic sign for detecting intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas with time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography.

PURPOSE: Together with the foramen ovale, the middle meningeal artery (MMA) looks like a high heel shoe print on axial time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) images, with the MMA resembling the heel. Cranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) are often fed by the MMA, which can lead to an increase of signal intensity and diameter of this vessel, resulting in a more "shiny" and "thick" high heel print appearance than on the contralateral side. We describe this finding as a novel radiologic sign and provide cut-off values for the ratios of MMA signal intensities and diameters f

Are suspensory ligaments important for middle ear reconstruction?

As the resolution of 3D printing techniques improves, the possibility of individualized, 3-ossicle constructions adds a new dimension to middle ear prostheses. In order to optimize these designs, it is essential to understand how the ossicles and ligaments work together to transmit sound, and thus how ligaments should be replicated in a middle ear reconstruction. The middle ear ligaments are thought to play a significant role in maintaining the position of the ossicles and constraining axis of rotation. Paradoxically, investigations of the role of ligaments to date have shown very little impac…

Development of a Low-Cost Cotton-Tipped Electrochemical Immunosensor for the Detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Collection of nasopharyngeal samples using swabs followed by the transfer of the virus into a solution and an RNA extraction step to perform reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the primary method currently used for the diagnosis of COVID-19. However, the need for several reagents and steps and the high cost of PCR hinder its worldwide implementation to contain the outbreak. Here, we report a cotton-tipped electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus antigen. Unlike the reported approaches, we integrate

The course of recovery of locomotor function over a 10-week observation period in a rat model of femoral nerve resection and autograft repair.

BACKGROUND: A great extent of knowledge on peripheral nerve regeneration has been gathered using the rat sciatic nerve model. The femoral nerve model of the rat offers an interesting alternative, as it lacks disadvantageous features such as automutilation. For the analysis of locomotor behavior in rats after sciatic nerve injury, the CatWalk™ XT Gait Analysis System is often used. However, lesions of the femoral nerve in the rat have yet remained unstudied with this method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten male Sprague Dawley rats were evaluated with the CatWalk XT to study their gait after a 6-mm r

Reinforced Electrospun Polycaprolactone Nanofibers for Tracheal Repair in an In Vivo Ovine Model.

Tracheal stenosis caused by congenital anomalies, tumors, trauma, or intubation-related damage can cause severe breathing issues, diminishing the quality of life, and potentially becoming fatal. Current treatment methods include laryngotracheal reconstruction or slide tracheoplasty. Laryngotracheal reconstruction utilizes rib cartilage harvested from the patient, requiring a second surgical site. Slide tracheoplasty involves a complex surgical procedure to splay open the trachea and reconnect both segments to widen the lumen. A clear need exists for new and innovative approaches that can be ea
