Baseline and Lifetime Suicidality and Risk Factors Among Pretrial Jail Detainees Enrolled in a Suicide Prevention Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Jail detention may be a marker of suicide risk in the community. This article aimed to describe the phenomenology of suicide risk, including lifetime suicidal behaviors and comorbid conditions, observed among individuals recruited into a suicide prevention trial who passed through pretrial jail detention before returning to the community. METHODS: Data on baseline characteristics of 800 adult participants from the SPIRIT (Suicide Prevention Intervention for At-Risk Individuals in Transition) study were analyzed. RESULTS: Half the participants reported a suicide attempt in the 30 d

Criminal Offending and Incarceration in United States Adults With Early Phase Psychosis and Comorbid Substance Use Disorder.

AIM: Studies have shown that people experiencing early phase psychosis (EPP) are at increased risk for criminal conviction and incarceration. However, there is limited data looking at overall legal burden. To address these gaps in the literature, the goal of this study was to categorise criminal charges and convictions using the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) uniform crime reporting (UCR) program, assess frequency of incarcerations, and describe the frequency of substance use disorder (SUD) diagnoses and its relationship to criminal offending and incarceration in a well ca

A self-assessment of opioid use disorder services at a Pacific Northwest County jail.

This study describes the delivery of opioid use disorder (OUD) services in a Pacific Northwest County jail focusing on screening, assessment, withdrawal management, and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Guided by the 2023 Medicaid performance measures, self-assessment data were collected through stakeholder interviews, policy and electronic healthcare records (EHR) analyses, and a systematic survey focusing on conformity to practice, policy, and documentation. This jail provided OUD screening, assessment, withdrawal management, and MOUD supported by institutional policy and an EHR so

Intergenerational inferences about punishment: Judgments of children of incarcerated parents across development.

Some scholars argue that punishment communicates information about punished individuals. We extended this theorizing by asking whether laypeople (237 5- to 6-year-olds, 221 7- to 8-year-olds, 220 adults) understand punishment as communicating messages about individuals not directly implicated in punishment-related scenarios and how this understanding might change across development. Three studies asked U.S. 5- to 8-year-olds and adults to indicate the extent to which they believe that adults' incarceration is attributable to their biological relatives. In Study 1, children were more likely tha

An Interpretive Description of Drug Withdrawal Among Pregnant Women in Jail.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the experience of drug withdrawal among pregnant women in jail. DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive descriptive approach. SETTING/PROBLEM: The care of incarcerated pregnant women constitutes a complex and significant public health problem. Many have substance use disorder (SUD) and cycle in and out of jails in their community, resulting in repeated experiences of drug withdrawal. Most jails do not provide medication-assisted therapy for management of withdrawal, a situation that violates standards of care set by leading health organizations. The experience of drug withdr

Feasibility and effectiveness of extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP) among correctional populations: a systematic review.

Background: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce risks for overdose among correctional populations. Among other barriers, daily dosing requirements hinder treatment continuity post-release. Extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP) may therefore be beneficial. However, limited evidence exists. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review examining the feasibility and effectiveness of XR-BUP among correctional populations. Methods: Searches were carried out in Pubmed, Embase, and PsychINFO in October 2023. Ten studies reporting on feasibility or effectiveness of XR-BUP were included, rep

Implementation strategies to screen, refer and link women involved in the carceral system to PrEP for HIV prevention.

PURPOSE: Women involved in the carceral system (CS) experience several conditions that increase their risk for HIV (e.g. high rates of substance use, psychiatric disorders, histories of victimization). The purpose of this study is to explore perspectives on potential strategies to connect women in the CS to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study conducted in-depth interviews with 27 women involved in the CS eligible for PrEP. Using vignettes, interviews explored attitudes, barriers and facilitators toward PrEP screening, referral and linkage facilita

United States county jail treatment and care of pregnant incarcerated persons with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Standards of care for pregnant persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) have been published across multiple institutions specializing in obstetrics and addiction medicine. Yet, this population faces serious barriers in accessing medications for OUD (MOUD) while incarcerated. Therefore, we examined the availability of MOUD in jails. METHODS: A Cross-sectional survey of jail administrators (n=371 across 42 states; 2018-2019) was conducted. Key indicators for this analysis include pregnancy testing at intake, number of county jails offering methadone or buprenorphine to pregnant incarc

Institutional Tobacco Policy and Tobacco Use Among Kansas Sheriffs' Staff and Individuals Incarcerated in Jail.

This article describes the factors that contribute to Kansas county jails' tobacco culture to identify reasons for high tobacco use and intervention opportunities. Kansas sheriffs' offices were asked to complete a novel 26-item survey from August through November 2019, and 40% responded. A few reported that tobacco cessation counseling was available to staff (31%) or incarcerated individuals (12%). Seventy-nine percent reported that staff were permitted to use tobacco in designated places outside, whereas 24% reported that tobacco use by incarcerated individuals was permitted in designated pla

Opioid Overdose Deaths Among Formerly Incarcerated Persons and the General Population: North Carolina, 2000‒2018.

Objectives. To compare opioid overdose death (OOD) rates among formerly incarcerated persons (FIPs) from 2016 to 2018 with the North Carolina population and with OOD rates from 2000 to 2015. Methods. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 259 861 North Carolina FIPs from 2000 to 2018 linked with North Carolina death records. We used indirectly standardized OOD mortality rates and ratios and present 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results. From 2017 to 2018, the OOD rates in the North Carolina general population decreased by 10.1% but increased by 32% among FIPs. During 2016 to 2018, the

Nursing Leadership Implications for Clinical Placements in Corrections.

Clinical placements in correctional settings offer nursing students unique opportunities for learning mental health and community health concepts, including social justice, restorative justice and the impact of poverty and marginalization on health and life choices. Although there is some evidence to suggest that a small number of nursing programs use clinical placements in correctional settings, relatively little scholarly literature addresses nursing education in such settings, or the implications for nursing leadership when students do have an opportunity to learn in correctional settings.

Contraceptive use in Appalachian women who use drugs and were recruited from rural jails.

This study describes a secondary data analysis of contraceptive use across the lifetime and within the six months prior to incarceration in a sample of 400 currently incarcerated women recruited from rural, Appalachian jails, who were using drugs prior to incarceration. Phase 1 (baseline) data from an NIH funded study were used to examine rates of contraceptive use, reasons for nonuse of condoms, and correlates of condom use. Results indicate that the majority (96.5%) of respondents reported lifetime use of contraceptives, and most (70.5%) had a history of using multiple methods, with male con

"They all laughed and asked me if I enjoyed having sex with those guys": Exploring men's lived experiences when reporting rape to police in South Africa.

Rape is the most demoralizing type of crime violating human rights worldwide. Research has primarily focused on children and women's experiences of rape, even though victims include men and little documentation available concerning their experiences of reporting these incidents. The study aimed to investigate men's experiences when reporting rape to the police. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to collect and analyze qualitative data from a purposive sample of eleven men who were rape victims. The findings of the study revealed three superordinate and twenty-two subordinate

Inmates' Self-Reported Physical and Mental Health Problems: A Comparison by Sex and Age.

The present study explored the impact of both age and sex on inmates' self-reported physical and mental health problems. The inmates were older adults (55 or older) and housed in one of four correctional institutions from a state located in the northeastern region of the United States. Overall, findings revealed female inmates more often reported currently taking prescribed medications for mental or emotional problems and previously having been diagnosed with mental health problems prior to incarceration. Also, comparing male and female inmates by age categories (59 and younger vs. 60 and olde

Special Needs of and Promising Solutions for Incarcerated Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

Over 2.5 million military service members have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND). Research indicates OEF/OIF/OND veterans, compared to veterans of other service eras, have elevated risks of mental health problems, suicide rates, homelessness, and problems in the criminal justice system. This article reviews the characteristics of, treatment needs of, and emerging criminal justice reentry initiatives for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

The impact of early racial discrimination on illegal behavior, arrest, and incarceration among African Americans.

The prospective relations between perceived racial discrimination (PRD), assessed at 4 different time periods from childhood through adolescence, along with assessments of PRD from the police ("hassling"), and self-reports of arrest and incarceration at a mean age of 24.5 years, were examined in a sample of 889 African Americans from the Family and Community Health Study. Multiple covariates were included in the analyses (e.g., academic orientation, socioeconomic status, self-control). Structural equation modeling revealed relations between PRD, especially that assessed in childhood, and both
