Incidence of Secondary Skin Infections in Children Affected with Chickenpox: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox (varicella) is a common childhood viral illness that is usually self-limiting; however, it may be complicated by secondary bacterial skin infections, particularly in pediatric populations. These secondary infections contribute significantly to morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and increased healthcare utilization. The present study aims to determine the incidence of secondary skin infections among children affected with chickenpox and to identify associated risk factors. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive observational study was conducted among children diagnosed with chicke

Quantifying within-household tuberculosis transmission: a systematic review and prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Household-based studies are commonly used to investigate tuberculosis (TB) transmission and evaluate preventive interventions. These studies typically assume that household contacts (HHCs) who develop TB disease were infected by the identified index patient. However, community-acquired infections may challenge this assumption, potentially biasing findings. Here, we evaluated the proportion of genetically linked index-HHC pairs and examined whether this proportion varied based on the TB burden in the community. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in Lima, Peru, enrolli

Socioeconomic Status, Alcohol Use, and Mortality: Results From a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Both all-cause and alcohol mortality follow a social gradient. Studies have provided evidence of interaction between socioeconomic status (SES) and alcohol use in predicting alcohol-attributable mortality. It is unclear whether this holds true for all-cause mortality. This study examines interaction effects and investigates the role of biomarkers in all-cause mortality. METHODS: We included data from 4307 participants of the baseline survey (1997-2001) of SHIP (Study of Health in Pomerania)-START and a mortality follow-up from baseline until January 2023. All-cause mortality was t

Chemotherapy-driven gut microbiota remodeling in ovarian cancer: a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome shapes chemotherapy efficacy and outcomes in several cancers, but evidence in ovarian cancer (OC) remains limited and largely cross-sectional. Despite high initial response rates, long-term relapse in OC remains frequent, while conventional markers capture only short-term therapeutic sensitivity. Whether longitudinal gut-microbiome trajectories during chemotherapy are associated with long-term recurrence remains unknown. METHODS: Within the prospective SOCFCP cohort (N = 91; 13 recurrences), 100 serial fecal samples from a 33-patient sub-cohort were analyzed by

Comorbidities and lifestyle changes as predictors of the multiple sclerosis prodrome: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is increasingly recognized as having a prodromal phase, characterized by non-specific symptoms preceding demyelinating events, yet prospective, longitudinal assessments of relevant signs before the first MS symptom are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether a wide range of signs and symptoms occurred more frequently in individuals who later developed MS than in the underlying cohort. METHODS: We followed 113,876 women from the Nurses' Health Study II with prospectively collected data on lifestyle, health indicators, and diet. We examined the trajector

Bariatric Surgery Impact on Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Bariatric surgery has emerged as a promising intervention for obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition strongly associated with obesity and anovulatory infertility. While weight management is a key therapeutic strategy, the optimal approach remains uncertain. A recent randomized controlled trial evaluated the impact of bariatric surgery on ovulation rates in obese women with PCOS. However, methodological limitations, including baseline body mass index discrepancies and minimal weight loss in the medical management group, necessitate cautious interpretation of the findings

The effect of acetabular fracture surgery on gait biomechanics; A prospective longitudinal cohort study.

STUDY PURPOSE: Acetabular fractures are severe injuries that can result in altered gait patterns. These changes may arise from the injury itself, pain related adaptations, and the impact of surgery. The aim of this study was to gain insight into frontal, sagittal and transverse plane gait deviations in patients after surgically treated acetabular fractures during rehabilitation, compared to healthy controls. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal cohort study instrumented gait analysis was conducted at standardised speed, self-selected speed and fast speed in the patient's group at 3-, 6-

Associations of alcohol drinking with incident dementia: a prospective study from the UK Biobank.

Relationship between alcohol drinking and incident dementia remained uncertain. This study used UK Biobank cohort data to investigate the association between alcohol drinking and dementia risk, and potential effect modifications by cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, APOE4 gene, and sex. We excluded infrequent drinkers and participants with baseline dementia or dementia within two years of follow-up. Drinking status was defined as non-drinking, low-moderate and heavy drinking (by weekly alcohol units). Drinking behaviors included drinking with meals and drinking type. Primary outcome was all-ca
