Predisposition to psychological complications after stillbirth: a case report.

As many as one-third of women bereaved by stillbirth suffer psychological decompensation, and a similar proportion see the obstetric team as unsupportive. A case history is presented of a woman who suffered severe psychiatric illness after delivering a stillborn anencephalic infant. This paper discusses the powerful influence that the behavior of the obstetric team in the delivery room can exert on the long-term outcome of the crisis. This case highlights a number of practical aspects of the psychological management of bereavement by stillbirth.

Classification of chronic psychoses including delusional disorders and schizophrenias.

A classification of chronic psychoses including nonparanoid schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, paranoid state and paranoia (delusional disorder) is presented. This classification is dependent on a systematic increase in number of symptoms with each group. In particular, delusional disorder is examined with regard to family history. It is clear from the data which are presented that delusional disorder is more likely to be associated with a family history of such traits as suspiciousness, jealousy, secretiveness, and the presence of paranoid behavior or delusions. There is evidence that suc

[Recent aspects of the suicide problem (author's transl)].

The problem of suicide is linked not only with psychiatric and psychological aspects, but also with sociological, ethical and legal, philosophical and theological problems. Significantly results of suicide research are represented by the psychoanalytic aspects of suicide as a conflict of aggression and narcissistic crisis, as well as by the description of the "presuicidal syndrome" (Ringel) and the structural analysis of the suicidal event. Today, suicidal syndromes are strikingly frequent among adolescents, the aged, drug addicts, dipsomaniacs and alcohol and other addicts in general as well

No evidence for a correlation between behaviour and the size of the Y chromosome.

Y chromosome variation has been studied in three groups of Norwegian males: 35 boys from an adolescent psychiatric hospital; 45 men from a hospital for hard-to-manage or dangerous, psychotic men; and 26 boys from two ordinary school classes. Y chromosomes with 1, 2, and 3 brightly fluorescing bands were found in all three groups. One boy carried a Y with no bands. The mean values of the Yf/Yq ratio were not significantly different in the three groups (Yf is the length of the distal, brightly fluorescing part of Yq). Two cases of XY/XYY mosaicism were found among the psychotic men. The study sh

CHILDHOOD PSYCHOSIS OR MENTAL RETARDATION: A DIAGNOSTIC DILEMMA. II. PEDIATRIC AND NEUROLOGICAL ASPECTS.

A pediatric and neurological study of 62 retarded psychotic children revealed more family psychopathology, complications of pregnancy, and serious postnatal illness than in a control group. Motor development and speech development were slow in psychotic children, but obstetrical complications at the time of birth were not significantly more frequent than in controls. Abnormal physical findings in psychotic children were mainly congenital anomalies. Neurological deficits included mental retardation, speech defects, strabismus, and other non-localizing signs. EEG tracings were abnormal in 27 of

Agar/β-Cyclodextrin Composite Cryogels for Controlled Release of Aripiprazole.

Aripiprazole (ARZ) is an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat a variety of mood and psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, autism, and Tourette's syndrome. Although ARZ offers significant therapeutic benefits, its poor solubility in water requires the development of delivery systems aimed at improving the solubility and bioavailability of the drug. In this work, cryogels based on two natural products-agar and β-cyclodextrin (CD)-were developed and evaluated as a drug delivery system for ARZ. The cryogels were prepared by cryogenic treatmen…

Gender bias in clinicians' pathologization of atypical sexuality: a randomized controlled trial with mental health professionals.

The psychiatric classification of "normal" versus disordered sexual behavior has been a subject of some dispute. Although atypical sexual interests have been viewed traditionally as typically male, epidemiological data indicate its presence in both genders. We examined how gender and sexual orientation influence whether or not atypical sexual behavior is classified as a mental disorder. Mental health professionals (N = 546) were presented with five case vignettes where subjects exhibit paraphilic behaviors; one case with psychotic symptoms served as the control condition. For each vignette we

Three case studies of nonparaneoplastic limbic encephalitis (NPLE) in young adult males: Onset, course, and recovery following rehabilitation services.

Limbic encephalitis (LE) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain caused by autoimmunity or infection. LE has been a difficult to define and diagnose disorder due to the insidious and nonspecific (e.g., irritability, low mood, short-term memory complaints) presentation of early symptoms, as well as inconsistent findings on neuroimaging, lumbar puncture serum analysis, and electroencephalogram. Seizures, memory problems, and psychiatric disturbance are among the earliest and most prominent clinical features. This manuscript describes three adolescent males who

Investigating the 'jumping to conclusions' bias in people with anorexia nervosa.

'Jumping to conclusions' (JTC) is an established reasoning bias in people with psychosis and delusion proneness. Research investigating the … is may suggest that poor insight in eating disorders has different characteristics to that found in psychotic disorders, which may suggest that differences are needed in relation to how they are treated using psychological means. However, this was a small study, and study replication is required.

Prevalence and illness beliefs of sleep paralysis among Chinese psychiatric patients in China and the United States.

To investigate the prevalence and illness beliefs of sleep paralysis (SP) among Chinese patients in a psychiatric out-patient clinic, consecutive Chinese/Chinese-American patients who attended psychiatric out-patient clinics in Boston and Shanghai were asked about their lifetime prevalence, personal experience and perceptions regarding the causes, precipitating factors, consequences, and help-seeking of SP. During the 4-month study period, 42 non-psychotic psychiatric out-patients from the Boston site and 150 patients from the Shanghai site were interviewed. The prevalence of SP was found to b

GAD(67): the link between the GABA-deficit hypothesis and the dopaminergic- and glutamatergic theories of psychosis.

Decreases in the 67 kDa isoenzyme of brain glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD(67)) expression have been consistently found in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In animals GAD(67) expression is diminished by chronic, but not acute stimulation of dopamine D(2) receptors and by short-term blockade of NMDA receptors. In contrast, chronic treatment with D(2) receptor antagonists enhances GAD(67) expression. Thus, antipsychotic treatment cannot explain the reduction in GAD(67) levels in patients with psychotic disorders. Rather, pathophysiological findings such as reduced viability of …

Chronic GM2 gangliosidosis masquerading as atypical Friedreich ataxia: clinical, morphologic, and biochemical studies of nine cases.

A progressive spinocerebellar degenerative disorder was characterized in nine patients, aged 11 to 37 years, from four unrelated Ashkenazi Jewish families; affected individuals had markedly deficient beta-hexosaminidase A activity. Symptoms included early onset of cerebellar signs (tremor, incoordination, and dysarthia) and, with maturity, the development of upper and lower motor neuron disorders, marked dysarthia, and ataxia. Three older patients, aged 26, 32, and 37 years, had dementia or recurrent psychotic episodes. Membrane-bound lamellar cytoplasmic inclusions, consistent with lysosomal

Association of High-Potency Cannabis Use With Mental Health and Substance Use in Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Cannabis use is consistently linked to poorer mental health outcomes, and there is evidence that use of higher-potency cannabis increases these risks. To date, no studies have described the association between cannabis potency and concurrent mental health in a general population sample or addressed confounding using longitudinal data. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between cannabis potency and substance use and mental health outcomes, accounting for preceding mental health and frequency of cannabis use. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from th

Clinical and cognitive factors affecting psychosocial functioning in remitted patients with bipolar disorder.

Impaired interpersonal, social, and occupational functioning is very often observed in patients with bipolar disorder, not only at the acute stages of the illness but in remission as well. This finding raises the question of multiple factors that might affect psychosocial functioning in bipolar patients, such as residual subsyndromal symptoms and neuropsychological deficits. Social cognition impairment, especially impaired Theory of Mind (ToM), might also play an important role in bipolar patients' every-day functioning, similarly to what was found in patients with schizophrenia. The present s
