Risk factors for female and male homicidal strangulation in Johannesburg, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of research on homicidal strangulation by gender. OBJECTIVES: A sex-disaggregated and comparative research approach was used to investigate individual-level risk factors for female and male homicidal strangulation in Johannesburg, South Africa (2001 - 2010). METHODS: Data were drawn from the National Injury Mortality Surveillance System. Logistic regressions were used to examine associations between each of the independent variables and homicidal strangulation in females and males relative to all other female and male homicides, respectively. RESULTS: The risk

Prevalence and risk factors of refractive error: a cross-sectional Study in Han and Yi adults in Yunnan, China.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the prevalence of refractive error (RE) in older adults in China, and most have focused on East China. Our study determined the prevalence and risk factors of RE in Han and Yi adults aged 40-80 years in rural and urban areas in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study is part of the China National Health Survey (CNHS). The age-adjusted prevalence rates of RE in Han and Yi adults aged 40-80 years in Yunnan were compared. We used a multivariate logistic regression model to identify risk factors for myopia and hyperopia. RESU

Socioeconomic status and deaths due to unintentional injury among children: A socio-spatial analysis in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death among children <10 years old. Low socioeconomic status is a risk factor associated with a high prevalence of injuries and our study aimed to explore the geographic distribution of mortality due to unintentional injury in this age group assessing the association between this type of injury on the one hand and socioeconomic disadvantages and family structure on the other using cluster and spatial regression analyses. Using exploratory factor analysis, we assembled nine socioeconomic variables into four composite factors including area

Frontal crash simulations using parametric human models representing a diverse population.

Objective: Analyses of crash data have shown that older, obese, and/or female occupants have a higher risk of injury in frontal crashes compared to the rest of the population. The objective of this study was to use parametric finite element (FE) human models to assess the increased injury risks and identify safety concerns for these vulnerable populations. Methods: We sampled 100 occupants based on age, sex, stature, and body mass index (BMI) to span a wide range of the U.S. adult population. The target anatomical geometry for each of the 100 models was predicted by the statistical geometry mo

The association between eGFR in the normal or mildly impaired range and incident cadiovascular disease: Age and sex analysis.

BACKGROUND: Worse renal function, even in the normal or mildly impaired range, is associated with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD). Whether this association exists in both sexes across all ages is not known. METHODS: A population based cohort of individuals >22 years with no prior CVD and with an eGFR 60-130 ml/min/1.73 m2. eGFR was calculated using the CKD-EPI formula. Incident CVD was defined as either myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, coronary revascularization, or cerebrovascular event. Incident CVD was examined separately in men and women in 3 age-groups (young, 22-40
