Balancing pragmatism, norms and power relations: a qualitative study among post-abortion intrauterine device users in central Uganda.

While almost half of all pregnancies in Uganda are unintended, the use of post-abortion intrauterine devices (IUDs) remains low. In this study, we explored how women in Uganda with current or recent post-abortion IUD use navigated socio-cultural factors, norms and power relations, and overcame challenges that often hinder contraceptive use in this context. Between January and August 2023, we conducted a qualitative study at four health facilities in central Uganda. The study included 24 in-depth interviews with women aged 19 years and above who had used an IUD following treatment for incomplet

Living with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: A qualitative evidence synthesis of patient, caregiver and practitioner perspectives.

PURPOSE: Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) is an incurable, slow-growing blood cancer requiring lifelong surveillance and episodic treatment. While clinical management is well characterised, the experiences of patients, caregivers, and practitioners remain underexplored. This review aimed to integrate these perspectives. METHODS: A qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted following ENTREQ guidelines. Systematic searches of seven databases and grey literature identified qualitative studies reporting the experiences of patients with CLL, their informal caregivers, and healthcare professio

Stigma and Relationship and Sexual Life in People with Severe Mental Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Stigma negatively affects the well-being of individuals with severe mental disorders (SMD). However, its specific impact on romantic and sexual intimacy remains fragmented in the literature. This study aimed to identify which aspects of intimate life are affected by stigma and the factors mediating this relationship. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA-P guidelines was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, EBSCOhost, VHL, and SciELO without date restrictions. Due to high methodological heterogeneity among the 26 included studies, a narrative synthesis was utili

AI Chatbot Service Adoption Among C2C Second-Hand Sellers: An Integrated UTAUT-TTAT Framework.

Against the background of AI penetration in C2C second-hand commerce, AI chatbots have emerged as vital operational tools for individual sellers. Prior technology adoption literature predominantly emphasizes positive acceptance drivers yet overlooks the simultaneous existence of benefit and risk perceptions, and cannot fully explain individual sellers' paradoxical adoption intentions. This study integrates the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Technology Threat Avoidance Theory (TTAT) to construct an integrated dual mediation model, adopting perceived effortlessnes

SPR-UPLC-QTOF/MS-GNPS-Guided Discovery of Hypermonol J as a Novel Tumor Necrosis Factor-Binding Small-Molecule Lead for Inflammatory Storm Intervention.

This study developed an integrated strategy combining surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for real-time biomolecular interaction analysis, ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF/MS) for compound profiling, and Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS)-based molecular networking for structural annotation in complex herbal systems. Using this platform, we identified hypermonol J (HPJ), a polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol (PPAP), as a high-affinity small-molecule binder of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) (K D

Microglial-Targeted GCPII Inhibition Reverses Neurocognitive Impairment and Synaptic Loss After EcoHIV Infection.

HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment persists despite combination antiretroviral therapy, largely driven by chronic microglial activation that sustains neuroinflammation and neuronal injury. Activated microglia contribute to HIV-associated brain pathology by releasing proinflammatory mediators that disrupt synaptic integrity and impair cognition. N-acetylaspartylglutamate (NAAG), an abundant neuropeptide that maintains glutamatergic homeostasis, is hydrolyzed by glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII) to glutamate. We previously demonstrated that reduced brain and cerebrospinal fluid NAAG le

The association between dual sensory impairment and social participation among older adults in China: a moderated mediation model of activities of daily living and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: While dual sensory impairment (DSI) is known to reduce social participation (SP) in older adults, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to ascertain: (1) whether ADL mediates the relationship between DSI and SP, and (2) how depressive symptoms modify the mediation pathway - questions essential for developing targeted interventions. METHODS: In the 2018 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), 8,270 older individuals (60 years of age or older) were enrolled. We examined a mediation model first, where ADL was a med

Self-study tool for integrating health equity into Health in All Policies (HiAP) initiatives.

SETTING: Setting. Health system leaders in Canada recognise that quality improvement alone cannot address health inequities. Intersectoral action, which involves coordination and collaboration across public, private, and third-sector organisations, can improve the distribution of social determinants of health (SDOH) and thereby, health equity. While Health in All Policies (HiAP) promotes this approach, critiques and empirical data highlight implementation gaps over whether health equity is actually being improved. The potential for HiAP initiatives to reduce health inequities can be strengthen

Recent Advances in the Local Drug Delivery Systems for Diabetic Wound Healing: A Comprehensive Review.

Wound management in diabetic patients holds significant importance in both clinical and social contexts due to the delayed and compromised healing that these individuals experience. Diabetic wounds exhibit slow and incomplete healing, increasing patients' susceptibility to infections. Managing wounds in diabetic patients, particularly when complicated by diabetic foot infection or diabetic foot ulcer, becomes challenging. The ideal drug delivery systems for treating diabetic wounds should integrate diverse drugs and/or biological factors, offering advantages such as sustained and localized rel

Evaluating urban tree species for cyclone-prone and polluted environments: evidence from Bhubaneswar Smart City, Odisha.

Urban forests play a vital role in sustainable cities by providing ecological, social, and climatic benefits. However, tree selection often emphasizes aesthetics and pollution control, overlooking resilience to extreme weather, particularly cyclones in coastal regions. This study proposes a climate-resilient tree selection framework that integrates ecological function and mechanical stability. Thirty-four commonly planted species in Bhubaneswar, a cyclone-prone city in Odisha, India, were evaluated using four indices: Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), Cyclone Tolerance Index (CTI), Use Val

A Brief Biofeedback Training, Integrated with Breathing and Relaxation Exercises, in Treating Tinnitus Disorders within Routine Medical Care.

Tinnitus, a distressing condition, significantly impacts psycho-social functioning. While medical interventions have been the norm for treating tinnitus, few studies have explored the efficacy of psychological treatments and their enduring effects. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief biofeedback training program in alleviating perceived tinnitus handicap severity over a 3-month follow-up period. Engaging 431 tinnitus outpatients from a medical center, the study allocated the control group to treatment as usual, involving monthly visits to an otolaryngologist and specific p

Vietnam's medical ethics framework: aspirations, challenges and the risk of physician burnout.

Medical ethics play a fundamental role in global healthcare, ensuring that patients receive care marked by dignity, compassion and fairness. Vietnam's 12 ethical principles, codified in 1996, integrate universal ethical standards with local sociocultural and ideological traditions, particularly emphasising emotional sacrifice, holistic care and social responsibility. While these principles promote professional excellence and community service, this essay argues that their application within Vietnam's under-resourced healthcare system has unintended consequences for physician well-being. An ana

Background: A mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) device is a commonly used tool for airway clearance in children with an ineffective cough. Whereas the device has been shown to have multiple benefits, limited evidence exists regarding parents' experiences with its home use in the Canadian context. This study's objective was to explore the perspectives and experiences of parents who receive service through the IWK Health Centre and use an MI-E device at home with their child. Methods: The study used an interpretive description design. Semi-structured interviews, conducted with 9 partic

Hymen-Sparing Myomectomy: Innovative Laparoscopic Approach for Prolapsed Pedunculated Cervicovaginal Leiomyoma in a Virgin Case.

Leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of the female genital tract. It may develop subserous, intramural, or submucous. The submucous subtype accounts for 5% of all cases, and it may become pedunculated or prolapse outside the uterine cavity, resulting in vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain, significantly impacting the quality of life, especially for larger leiomyomas. The management of such cases may require vaginal access, which may disrupt hymen integrity and is not accepted in conservative communities. Here, we present an innovative hymen-conserving Laparoscopic-And-Suprapubic Hysteroscopi
