In the cattle filarial parasite Setaria digitata the mitochondria like particles have been shown to possess NADH dependent fumarate reduction coupled with site I electron transport associated phosphorylation. To study the mechanism of the reduced serum selenium concentration in patients with liver damage we administered 200 micrograms (2.53 mumol) selenium daily as selenium-rich yeast to 8 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and 8 healthy controls over 16 weeks. Initially selenium concentrations in serum were 24% lower (P less than 0.001) in patients than controls. During supplementation serum selenium levels increased in both groups but the difference between them persisted. Throughout the study whole blood selenium levels and glutathione peroxidase activities were also somewhat lower (P = NS)

In earlier studies evidence was obtained for the existence of both high and low redox potential forms of cytochrome a3 (Hendler et al. 1986. Biophys. J. 49:717-729; Hendler and Sidhu. 1988. Biophys. J. 54:121-133). The current paper describes additional experiments that support this conclusion and then reviews a large number of experimental observations that appear to be consistent with the view that cytochrome a3 displays at least (see Sidhu and Hendler. 1990. Biophys. J. 57:1125-1140) two different forms, which are distinguishable by their redox potentials, spectra, and reactivity with CO.

Using UV absorption spectroscopy, first derivative spectroscopy, and UV difference spectroscopy, the active site of human superoxide dismutase is probed. First derivative spectra (dA/d lambda versus lambda) show the HESOD spectrum to be a composite of Phe and Trp absorbance. The 278 and 288 nm Trp absorbance peaks are sensitive to solvent polarity. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency is a common X-linked recessive disorder among the Chinese population. Neonatal screening for this condition is important and with necessary precaution, enzyme deficient infants are less likely to develop severe haemolysis and subsequent kernicterus.
