BACKGROUND: Chronic early trauma alters children's stress reactivity and increases the prevalence of anxiety disorders; yet the neuroendocrine and immune mechanisms underpinning this effect are not fully clear. Animal studies indicate that the mother's physiology and behavior mediate offspring stress in a system-specific manner, but few studies tested this external-regulatory maternal role in human children exposed to chronic stress.
METHODS: We followed a unique cohort of children exposed to continuous wartime trauma (N = 177; exposed; N = 101, controls; N = 76). At 10 years, maternal and ch

Healthcare workers (HCWs) were exposed to high levels of occupational stress and psychological problems, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the chain mediating effects of anxiety and depression in the association between insomnia and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among HCWs. The convenience sampling method was applied to recruit participants. 253 HCWs completed the assessment, which was designed to measure demographic characteristics, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and PTSS. Insomnia, depression, anxiety, and PTSS were significantly correlate

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related disorders are increasingly recognized as complex conditions involving not only psychological and neurobiological factors but also systemic physiological alterations. Among these, growing evidence points to the crucial role of the gut-brain axis in modulating stress responses, emotional regulation, and neuroinflammation. Objective: This narrative review aims to synthesize the emerging literature on the interactions between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system in PTSD and trauma-related disorders, highlighting pote

Minimal research is available on the prevalence and impact of complicated grief (CG) in military service members and veterans, despite high reported rates of loss in this population. The present study aimed to examine prevalence rates of CG in a sample of treatment-seeking military service and members and veterans who served after September 11, 2001. Additionally, the study aimed to examine characteristics associated with CG as well as the association between CG and quality of life. In a sample of 622 military service members and veterans who served after September 11, 2001, 502 reported a sig

This study examined one-year after effects of exposure to war events on adolescents' Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms (PTS) and risk behaviors (substance use and involvement in school violence). In addition, it addressed two potential vulnerability factors: at the micro level, it examined whether childhood trauma raised the vulnerability of Israeli adolescents to PTS and risk behaviors when exposed to war events. At the macro level, we explored whether ethnicity, i.e., being an Israeli Arab, is a vulnerability factor to PTS and risk behaviors. We used a representative sample of 7th to 11th grade

Nightmares are common, occurring weekly in 4%-10% of the population, and are associated with female gender, younger age, increased stress, psychopathology, and dispositional traits. Nightmare pathogenesis remains unexplained, as do differences between nontraumatic and posttraumatic nightmares (for those with or without posttraumatic stress disorder) and relations with waking functioning. No models adequately explain nightmares nor have they been reconciled with recent developments in cognitive neuroscience, fear acquisition, and emotional memory. The authors review the recent literature and pr

Memory, suggestibility, stress arousal, and trauma-related psychopathology were examined in 328 3- to 16-year-olds involved in forensic investigations of abuse and neglect. Children's memory and suggestibility were assessed for a medical examination and venipuncture. Being older and scoring higher in cognitive functioning were related to fewer inaccuracies. In addition, cortisol level and trauma symptoms in children who reported more dissociative tendencies were associated with increased memory error, whereas cortisol level and trauma symptoms were not associated with increased error for child

BACKGROUND: Mental illness is common among refugees displaced by conflict and war. While evidence points to the relatively good health in terms of longevity of migrants resettled in the destination country, less is known about the mortality of the most vulnerable migrants with a trauma-related diagnosis alone and those with an additional comorbid psychotic disorder. This study aimed to provide an overview of the number and mortality of foreign-born individuals diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Enduring Personality Change after a Catastrophic Event (PTSD/EPCACE), a psychotic diso

BACKGROUND: The loss of a close family member (e.g. child or spouse) has been shown to be one of the most stressful life-events increasing the risk of affective disorders. In the present study, we investigated for the first time the frequency of complicated grief in psychiatric inpatients with unipolar depression. Further, the study was aimed to identify characteristics predicting a complicated grief reaction in depressed patients.
METHODS: In a sample of 73 DSM-IV diagnosed unipolar affective disordered inpatients grief, depression, anxiety and psychological stress reaction were assessed.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown sleep problems, elevated fatigue, and high cases of burnout, as well as signs of post-traumatic stress and psychological distress among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many US hospitals attempted to minimise its impact on staff by providing basic resources, mental health services, and wellness programs. Therefore, it is critical to re-evaluate these well-being indices and guide future administrative efforts.
PURPOSE: To determine the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic after 18 months on hospital nurses' insomnia, fatigue, burnout, post-traumatic stre

Following a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence (IPV), survivors often experience stress related to the violence. These high levels of stress related to IPV can be associated with the daily activities of survivors and their relationships with their children, such as maternal-child bonding. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between daily activities, daily stress levels, parenting self-efficacy and behaviors, and maternal-child bonding among survivors living in an IPV shelter using an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. BACKGROUND: Stress is associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and can lead to lasting alterations in autonomic function and in extreme cases symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a potentially useful tool as a modulator of autonomic nervous system function, however currently available implantable devices are limited by cost and inconvenience.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of transcutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS) on autonomic responses to stress.
METHODS: Using a double-blind approach, we investi

Norepinephrine (NE) signaling is disrupted in stress disorders, with insufficient NE signaling implicated in major depressive disorder and hyperactive NE signaling associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, suggesting that adequate mood regulation requires optimal NE levels. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) is a hub for stress processing and receives dense noradrenergic innervation from the locus coeruleus (LC), the primary noradrenergic nucleus in the brain. The relationship between LC activity and cognitive/behavioral function during fear conditioning has been described as an inverted U,

PURPOSE: Substance use and traumatic events are prevalent in Afghanistan, but their relationship is under-investigated.
METHODS: A nationally-representative, cross-sectional survey was conducted in 8 regions of Afghanistan in 2017 (N = 4474). First, we examined the burden of substance use, and demographic correlates (e.g., gender, age) in the Afghan general population; second, we examined the association between traumatic and stressful experiences, including PTSD, and any substance use, tobacco use and sedative use.
RESULTS: Substance use disorder is prevalent in Afghanistan, with prevalence

BACKGROUND: Refugees have long been considered at risk for mental disorder. We sought to characterise this risk in an out-patient refugee sample by analysing the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and dysfunction, and between symptoms and the socio-demographic background and stressors specific to this refugee sample.
METHOD: A consecutive sample of 231 refugee patients referred to the psychiatric out-patient unit at the Psychosocial Centre for Refugees, University of Oslo, was examined with a semi-structured interview guide, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Hopkins Symptom Check-

United States veterans are a multifaceted population with a distinct culture that includes, but is not limited to, values, customs, ethos, selfless duty, codes of conduct, implicit patterns of communication, and obedience to command. Veterans experience mental health disorders, substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress, and traumatic brain injury at disproportionate rates compared to their civilian counterparts. Eighteen to 22 American veterans commit suicide daily and young veterans aged 18-44 are most at risk. Health care professionals must be aware of patients' military history and be

Fear memory retrieval is relevant to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One of the hallmark symptoms of PTSD is the repeated retrieval and re-experiencing of the initial fear memory even long after the traumatic event has occurred. Women are nearly twice as likely to develop PTSD following a trauma than men, thus sex differences in the retrieval of fear memories is highly relevant for understanding the development and maintenance of PTSD. In the current study, we aimed to examine sex differences in the retrieval and extinction of either recent or remote fear m
