Use of biogenic copper nanoparticles synthesized from a native Escherichia sp. as photocatalysts for azo dye degradation and treatment of textile effluents.

Textile wastewater contains a huge amount of azo dyes and heavy metals and catastrophically deteriorates the agricultural field by affecting … al conductivity, turbidity, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, hardness, chlorides and sulfates as compared to the non-treated samples. Thus, the promising dye detoxification and textile effluent recycling efficiency of biogenic CuNPs may lead to the development of eco-friendly and cost-efficient process for large-scale wastewater treatment.

Characterization of urban aerosol: Seasonal variation of genotoxicity of the water-soluble portion of PM2.5 and PM1.

Urban particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of several classes of chemicals: elemental carbon, ammonium, sulfates, nitrates, organic compounds and metals. For a long time, numerous studies had shown that PM causes health problems and, in 2013, it has been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as carcinogenic to humans (group 1). Furthermore, it's known that the fine fraction of PM is the most genotoxic, and that smaller particles are retained by the lower respiratory system, making fine particles a public health concern. In this study we characterize the water-so…

Differential Impact of Dietary Branched Chain and Aromatic Amino Acids on Chronic Kidney Disease Progression in Rats.

The metabolism of dietary proteins generates waste products that are excreted by the kidney, in particular nitrogen-containing urea, uric acid, ammonia, creatinine, and other metabolites such as phosphates, sulfates, and protons. Kidney adaptation includes an increase in renal plasma flow (RPF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and represents a burden for diseased kidneys increasing the progression rate of CKD. The present study aimed at identifying potential differences between amino acid (AA) groups constituting dietary proteins regarding their impact on RPF, GFR, and CKD progression. We …

Short-term airborne particulate matter exposure alters the epigenetic landscape of human genes associated with the mitogen-activated protein kinase network: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air particulate matter is known to elevate blood biomarkers of inflammation and to increase cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality. Major components of airborne particulate matter typically include black carbon from traffic and sulfates from coal-burning power plants. DNA methylation is thought to be sensitive to these environmental toxins and possibly mediate environmental effects on clinical outcomes via regulation of gene networks. The underlying mechanisms may include epigenetic modulation of major inflammatory pathways, yet the details remain unclear. METHODS: We…

Serum hyaluronidase aberrations in metabolic and morphogenetic disorders.

Hyaluronidases are endo-glycosidases that degrade both hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) (HA) and chondroitin sulfates. Deficiency of hyaluronidase activity has been predicted to result in a phenotype similar to that observed in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). In the present study, we surveyed a variety of patients with phenotypes similar to those observed in MPS, but without significant mucopolysacchariduria to determine if some are based on aberrations in serum hyaluronidase (Hyal-1) activity. The study included patients with well-characterized dysmorphic disorders occurring on genetic basis, as wel…

The role of particulate size and chemistry in the association between summertime ambient air pollution and hospitalization for cardiorespiratory diseases.

In order to address the role that the ambient air pollution mix, comprised of gaseous pollutants and various physical and chemical measures of particulate matter, plays in exacerbating cardiorespiratory disease, daily measures of fine and coarse particulate mass, aerosol chemistry (sulfates and acidity), and gaseous pollution (ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide) were collected in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the summers of 1992, 1993, and 1994. These time series were then compared with concurrent data on the number of daily admissions to hospitals for either cardiac d…

[Stress and adaptation in humans--aging, illness, psychosocial stress].

We conducted research to determine compounds in human urine which show high values in healthy individuals, decrease with failing health (or bodily decay), clearly decline with advancing illness and finally reach very low values during terminal and severe illness. We have initially established that 17-ketosteroid sulfates (17-KS-S) are the substances we were searching for. Hans Selye regarded stress as the rate of wear and tear and 17-OHCS (cortisol) as its indicator. He further considered that stress is distinct from aging: There is no difference in the stress of ordinary life between young an…

Molecular cues for immune cells from small leucine-rich repeat proteoglycans in their extracellular matrix-associated and free forms.

In this review we highlight emerging immune regulatory functions of lumican, keratocan, fibromodulin, biglycan and decorin, which are members of the small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) of the extracellular matrix (ECM). These SLRPs have been studied extensively as collagen-fibril regulatory structural components of the skin, cornea, bone and cartilage in homeostasis. However, SLRPs released from a remodeling ECM, or synthesized by activated fibroblasts and immune cells contribute to an ECM-free pool in tissues and circulation, that may have a significant, but poorly understood foot print i

Novel subtype of mucopolysaccharidosis caused by arylsulfatase K (ARSK) deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are monogenic metabolic disorders that significantly affect the skeleton. Eleven enzyme defects in the lysosomal degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) have been assigned to the known MPS subtypes (I-IX). Arylsulfatase K (ARSK) is a recently characterised lysosomal hydrolase involved in GAG degradation that removes the 2-O-sulfate group from 2-sulfoglucuronate. Knockout of Arsk in mice was consistent with mild storage pathology, but no human phenotype has yet been described. METHODS: In this study, we report four affected individuals of two unrelated

Time-dependent distribution of sulphur, sulphate and glutathione in wheat tissues and grain as affected by three sulphur fertilization levels and late S fertilization.

Sulphur (S) fertilization has beneficial effects on yield and protein composition of mature wheat kernels. However, to understand the impact of S fertilization on storage protein composition, synthesis of S-containing compounds and their distribution during grain development has to be examined. A pot experiment with Triticum aestivum cultivar Türkis under three S fertilization levels (0 g, 0.1 g und 0.2 g S per pot) and a late S fertilization level at ear emergence was carried out. Stalk and leaves, flag leaves, ears and kernels were harvested separately during grain development at ear emergen

Alteration of the basement membrane in human thyroid diseases: an immunohistochemical study of type IV collagen, laminin and heparan sulphate proteoglycan.

Basement membrane (BM) alteration in thyroid diseases was examined by immunohistochemistry using antibodies for the three major BM proteins: type IV collagen, laminin and heparan sulphate proteoglycan. Linear epithelial BMs surrounding follicles accompanied by vascular BMs forming loops, similar to those seen in the normal thyroid, were observed in Graves' disease and adenomatous goitre. Hashimoto's thyroiditis showed scant epithelial BMs as a result of follicle destruction. In follicular adenomas, development of epithelial BMs seemed to be related to follicle formation; well-developed epithel

Corneal opacity in canine MPS I. Changes after bone marrow transplantation.

Corneal opacification associated with glycosaminoglycan (GAG) deposition occurs in canine mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-L-iduronidase. In affected dogs corneal lesions appear similar to those in children with the same disease. Transplantation of bone marrow from unaffected littermates was performed in 5 MPS I affected dogs at 5 months of age. In three recipients that became long-term survivors corneal clouding was largely alleviated compared to affected control dogs. In no case, however, did the corneas remain totally clear throughout the course of
