[Study on the vertebro-basilar system in "moyamoya" disease].

Posterior circulation in 82 children of "moyamoya" disease are studied. Two aspects of "moyamoya" disease, (ie; occlusive lesion of cerebral vessels and the development of abnormal vascular network as collateral channel,) are also detected in the vertebrobasilar system. Among 82 cases, 49 cases showed the occlusion of posterior cerebral artery at their quadrigeminal segment. Twenty-three showed the more proximal occlusive lesions. Vertebral artery occlusion were found in 3 cases. As the occlusive lesion progresses, abnormal vascular network at the posterior portion of skull base developed. Thi

Ipsilateral blinking seizures during left fronto-temporal ictal pattern on scalp EEG.

We report an infant with left eye blinking seizures accompanying a left (ipsilateral) fronto-temporal scalp EEG ictal pattern. The epileptogenic lesion was a left frontal encephalomalacia along the ventriculo-peritoneal shunt tract. The shunt was inserted for treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. This case illustrates the lateralizing value of the ictal blinking. Review of the literature suggests that seizures with unilateral blinking are likely to be produced by activation of ipsilateral trigeminal fibers innervating subdural intracranial structures and pial vessels in temporal and fronta

Compulsive polydipsia following meningioma resection: an epileptic phenomenon? Case report.

The authors report the case of an individual who developed compulsive polydipsia following resection of a left sphenoidal ridge meningioma. The episodic, stereotyped nature of his symptoms, response to treatment, and electroencephalographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings are all highly consistent with temporal lobe-onset epilepsy. The pathophysiology of this underrecognized phenomenon is discussed.

Lipoid proteinosis. A case report.

Lipoid proteinosis caused specific changes in the brain, larynx, and cervical esophagus of a young adult man. Laryngography clearly depicts the distribution and degree of pharyngeal and laryngeal pathology. Florid calcification, conforming to the classical temporal lobe distribution, is documented by plain films and tomography. The clinical picture and the pertinent literature are reviewed.

Differences Changes in Cerebellar Functional Connectivity Between Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Seed-Based Approach.

Background: Recent studies have discovered that functional connections are impaired among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), even at the preclinical stage. The cerebellum has been implicated as playing a role in cognitive processes. However, functional connectivity (FC) among cognitive sub-regions of the cerebellum in patients with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains to be further elucidated. Objective: Our study aims to investigate the FC changes of the cerebellum among patients with AD and MCI, compared to healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we explored the role of cerebellu

Comparing amyloid-β plaque burden with antemortem PiB PET in autosomal dominant and late-onset Alzheimer disease.

Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging can bind to different types of amyloid-β plaques and … ations with diffuse plaque in the amygdala and occipital lobe, and with cored/compact plaque in the temporal lobe. Thus, commonly used PiB PET summary regions predominantly reflect diffuse plaque burden in ADAD and a mixture of diffuse and cored/compact plaque burden in LOAD. In direct comparisons of ADAD and LOAD, postmortem stereology identified much greater …

Delusions, illusions and hallucinations in epilepsy: 2. Complex phenomena and psychosis.

In this second paper the clinical features and electrophysiological underpinnings of more complex psychotic states associated with epilepsy are reviewed. (a) Complex partial status epilepticus, in particular of temporal lobe origin, may result in mental states remarkably similar to those seen in the primary psychoses. This non-convulsive state is associated with prolonged epileptic discharges on intracranial stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) in hippocampal and other mesial temporal structures, sometimes without abnormalities on the scalp EEG. Where hallucinatory or psychotic symptomatology d…

Individual differences in skilled adult readers reveal dissociable patterns of neural activity associated with component processes of reading.

We used fMRI to examine patterns of brain activity associated with component processes of visual word recognition and their relationships to individual differences in reading skill. We manipulated both the judgments adults made on written stimuli and the characteristics of the stimuli. Phonological processing led to activation in left inferior frontal and temporal regions whereas semantic processing was associated with bilateral middle frontal activation. Individual differences in reading subskills were reflected in differences in the degree to which cortical regions were engaged during readin

Skull-fixated fiducial markers improve accuracy in staged frameless stereotactic epilepsy surgery in children.

OBJECT: Surgery to monitor and resect epileptogenic foci may be undertaken in 2 stages, providing an opportunity to use skull-fixated fiducials implanted during the first stage to improve the accuracy of cortical resection during the second stage. This study compared the intrinsic accuracy of skin-based and skull-fixated fiducial markers in registering frameless stereotaxy during pediatric epilepsy surgery. To the authors' knowledge, these modalities of registration have not previously been directly compared in this population. METHODS: The authors undertook a retrospective review of pediatri

Predictive codes for forthcoming perception in the frontal cortex.

Incoming sensory information is often ambiguous, and the brain has to make decisions during perception. "Predictive coding" proposes that the brain resolves perceptual ambiguity by anticipating the forthcoming sensory environment, generating a template against which to match observed sensory evidence. We observed a neural representation of predicted perception in the medial frontal cortex, while human subjects decided whether visual objects were faces or not. Moreover, perceptual decisions about faces were associated with an increase in top-down connectivity from the frontal cortex to face-sen

An electrophysiological comparison of visual categorization and recognition memory.

Object categorization emphasizes the similarities that bind exemplars into categories, whereas recognition memory emphasizes the specific identification of previously encountered exemplars. Mathematical modeling has highlighted similarities in the computational requirements of these tasks, but neuropsychological research has suggested that categorization and recognition may depend on separate brain systems. Following training with families of novel visual shapes (blobs), event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded during both categorization and recognition tasks. ERPs related to early

Reduced orbitofrontal and temporal grey matter in a community sample of maltreated children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is strongly associated with increased risk of psychiatric disorder. Previous neuroimaging studies have reported atypical neural structure in the orbitofrontal cortex, temporal lobe, amygdala, hippocampus and cerebellum in maltreated samples. It has been hypothesised that these structural differences may relate to increased psychiatric vulnerability. However, previous studies have typically recruited clinical samples with concurrent psychiatric disorders, or have poorly characterised the range of maltreatment experiences and levels of concurrent anxiety or dep…

The cortical regions and white matter tracts underlying auditory comprehension in patients with primary brain tumor.

The comprehension of spoken language is one of the most essential language functions in humans. However, the neurological underpinnings of auditory comprehension remain under debate. Here we used multi-modal neuroimaging analyses on a group of patients with low-grade gliomas to localize cortical regions and white matter tracts responsible for auditory language comprehension. Region-of-interests and voxel-level whole-brain analyses showed that cortical areas in the posterior temporal lobe are crucial for language comprehension. The fiber integrity assessed with diffusion tensor imaging of the a…
