Patient-reported outcomes following participation in a preoperative peer support programme for total knee replacement: A prospective observational cohort study.

PURPOSE: Total knee replacement (TKR) is a highly successful operation; however, a proportion of patients remain dissatisfied following surgery, often related to unmet preoperative expectations. In response, Arthritis UK developed a pilot peer support programme for patients awaiting joint replacement. This study evaluated short-term changes in patient-reported experience following participation in the programme among patients awaiting TKR. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included patients scheduled for primary TKR who participated in a structured peer support programme de

Associations of single parenting and sociodemographic factors with mental health among young adults.

BACKGROUND: The transition to adulthood is a critical period for mental health, yet limited evidence exists on how family structure and sociodemographic contexts are associated with depressive symptoms and psychological distress. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Spatial Social Networks and Environmental Exposure (SSNE) Project to examine associations between single parenting, sociodemographic characteristics, and mental health outcomes among 2446 young adults in the United States. Mental health was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Depress

Effects of Anodal Left DLPFC tDCS on Panic Severity in Panic Disorder Patients With and Without Comorbid Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Septum Deviation.

PURPOSE: Panic disorder (PD) is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and impaired top-down modulation of the fear circuitry, notably left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) hypoactivity and dysregulation of respiratory-panic pathways. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that modulates cortical excitability by delivering low-intensity electrical currents through scalp electrodes. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and nasal septum deviation (NSD) commonly disrupt nasal breathing and sleep while increasing anxiety vulnerabili

Association of a healthy ageing index with health-related outcomes in a multi-ethnic cohort from Singapore.

BACKGROUND: The global population is ageing rapidly and it is important to promote healthy ageing. The Healthy Ageing Index (HAI) is a comprehensive measure of health, but there is limited research on its association with other age-related outcomes. The management of an aging population necessitates considerations even among generally healthy adults, as age-related diseases often remain unaccounted for until later stages of life. This study explores the association of risk factors with HAI and its association with peripheral artery disease (PAD), muscle strength, health-related quality of life

Prevalence of psychosocial findings and their correlation with TMD symptoms in an adult population sample.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Some studies suggested an association between Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and psychosocial status, but most of them are focused on samples of patients looking for treatment or present limits of sample representativeness. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychosocial status in a large sample of adult population, further than to assess its association to TMD symptoms, oral behaviours, and self-reported facial trauma. RESULTS: the study sample included 4299 subjects older than 18 years randomly recruited from general population in public spaces during th

Characteristics and predictors of persistent somatic symptoms in patients with cardiac disease.

Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) are a diagnostic core criterion of the somatic symptom disorder. This longitudinal study aims to determine the frequency of PSS in patients with cardiac disease, identify potential predictive factors, and investigate its impact on healthcare utilization. Somatic symptoms were assessed with the Somatic Symptom Scale-8 four times over the course of three months in consecutively approached cardiac outpatients. Patients were grouped having PSS vs. not having PSS following a psychometric-driven approach based on the SSS-8 cut-off score and a data-driven approach ap

Regional brain atrophy and aberrant cortical folding relate to anxiety and depression in patients with traumatic brain injury and psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are characterized by multifocal and global abnormalities in brain function and connectivity. Only a few studies have examined neuroanatomic correlates of PNES. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is reported in 83% of patients with PNES and may be a key component of PNES pathophysiology. In this study, we included patients with TBI preceding the onset of PNES (TBI-PNES) and TBI without PNES (TBI-only) to identify neuromorphometric abnormalities associated with PNES. METHODS: Adults diagnosed with TBI-PNES (n = 62) or TBI-only (n = 59) completed psy

[Link between depression and academic self-esteem in gifted children].

INTRODUCTION: Studies of the psychology of gifted children frequently refer to their relatively immature affective development in terms of their intellectual capacities and the relational difficulties they experience with regard to their peers, teachers, close acquaintances and sometimes their parents. From a psychopathological viewpoint, various types of problem have been observed such as depressive symptoms, motor instability coupled with hyperactivity, attentional deficits, impulsivity and a fall in self-esteem. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we wished to verify the links between self-esteem an

Hospital variation in revision rates after primary knee arthroplasty was not explained by patient selection: baseline data from 1452 patients in the Danish prospective multicenter cohort study, SPARK.

PURPOSE: Revision rates following primary knee arthroplasty vary by country, region and hospital. The SPARK study was initiated to compare primary surgery across three Danish regions with consistently different revision rates. The present study investigated whether the variations were associated with differences in the primary patient selection. METHODS: A prospective observational cohort study included patients scheduled Sep 2016 Dec 2017 for primary knee arthroplasty (total, medial/lateral unicompartmental or patellofemoral) at three high-volume hospitals, representing regions with 2-year c

Hand Posturing Is a Nonverbal Indicator of Catastrophic Thinking for Finger, Hand, or Wrist Injury.

BACKGROUND: Prior research documents that greater psychologic distress (anxiety/depression) and less effective coping strategies (catastrophic thinking, kinesophobia) are associated with greater pain intensity and greater limitations. Recognition and acknowledgment of verbal and nonverbal indicators of psychologic factors might raise opportunities for improved psychologic health. There is evidence that specific patient words and phrases indicate greater catastrophic thinking. This study tested proposed nonverbal indicators (such as flexion of the wrist during attempted finger flexion or extens
