Clinician and Patient Perception of a Voice Therapy Program Utilizing a Variably Occluded Face Mask: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to assess clinician and patient feedback about voice therapy using a variably occluded face mask (VOFM) and to determine if voice therapy augmented via a VOFM would result in favorable changes in patient self-perceived handicap, as well as acoustic and aerodynamic measures. METHODS/DESIGN: This pilot study used a prospective, pre-post single group design. Eleven patients with dysphonia due to primary muscle tension dysphonia (8) or benign vocal fold lesions (3) were recruited. Data collected included patient and clinician feedback of voice ther

Rhythm Perception, Speaking Rate Entrainment, and Conversational Quality: A Mediated Model.

PURPOSE: Acoustic-prosodic entrainment, defined as the tendency for individuals to modify their speech behaviors to more closely align with the behaviors of their conversation partner, plays an important role in successful interaction. From a mechanistic perspective, acoustic-prosodic entrainment is, by its very nature, a rhythmic activity. Accordingly, it is highly plausible that an individual's rhythm perception abilities play a role in their ability to successfully entrain. Here, we examine the impact of rhythm perception in speaking rate entrainment and subsequent conversational quality.

Effect of a Single Injection of Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor into the Vocal Folds: A 36-Month Clinical Study.

OBJECTIVE: A single injection of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) into the vocal folds of patients with glottal insufficiency has been shown to be effective for a few years. However, the long-term therapeutic effect of a single injection of bFGF into the vocal folds has yet to be demonstrated. In this study, the therapeutic effect of a single injection of bFGF into the vocal folds was investigated over several years by monitoring patients for 36 months following this treatment. METHODS: Nineteen patients with glottal insufficiency received injections of bFGF diluted to 20 μg/mL in the su

Efficacy of a Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises-Therapeutic Program in Behavioral Dysphonia: A Randomized and Blinded Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) may improve the source and filter interaction by changing the acoustic characteristics and the impedance of the vocal tract, both in dysphonic and vocally healthy populations. However, there are a few studies that verify the effects of these exercises in a clinical trial. Thus, this study's purpose was to analyze the effectiveness of the SOVTE-Therapeutic Program (SOVTE-TP) in vocal quality and self-assessment, comparing it with Vocal Function Exercises. METHOD: Eighteen (eight men; 10 women), ages 18-50, with behavioral dysphonia participa

Intrinsic physiological properties underlie auditory response diversity in the avian cochlear nucleus.

Sensory systems exploit parallel processing of stimulus features to enable rapid, simultaneous extraction of information. Mechanisms that facilitate this differential extraction of stimulus features can be intrinsic or synaptic in origin. A subdivision of the avian cochlear nucleus, nucleus angularis (NA), extracts sound intensity information from the auditory nerve and contains neurons that exhibit diverse responses to sound and current injection. NA neurons project to multiple regions ascending the auditory brain stem including the superior olivary nucleus, lateral lemniscus, and avian infer

Mild hyperthermia by MR-guided focused ultrasound in an ex vivo model of osteolytic bone tumour: optimization of the spatio-temporal control of the delivered temperature.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound was suggested for the induction of deep localized hyperthermia adjuvant to radiation- or chemotherapy. In this study we are aiming to validate an experimental model for the induction of uniform temperature elevation in osteolytic bone tumours, using the natural acoustic window provided by the cortical breakthrough. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experiments were conducted on ex vivo lamb shank by mimicking osteolytic bone tumours. The cortical breakthrough was exploited to induce hyperthermia inside the medullar cavity by delivering acoustic en

[Changes in the Physical Characteristics of the Eardrum Induced by Otitis Media with Effusion].

Detecting changes in the physical characteristics of the eardrum by ocular inspection is difficult. Herein, we propose an alternative method for the quantitative detection of such changes using an acoustic conductance tympanogram, termed as G tympanograms, which exhibit the real part of acoustic admittance. The middle ear, including the eardrum, can be modeled using a mechano-acoustic system with physical parameters comprising mass, spring, and friction, and we have developed a procedure to numerically evaluate these parameters. We report the results obtained thus far and discuss their signif

Difficulties in auditory organization as a cause of reading backwardness? An auditory neuroscience perspective.

Over 30 years ago, it was suggested that difficulties in the 'auditory organization' of word forms in the mental lexicon might cause reading difficulties. It was proposed that children used parameters such as rhyme and alliteration to organize word forms in the mental lexicon by acoustic similarity, and that such organization was impaired in developmental dyslexia. This literature was based on an 'oddity' measure of children's sensitivity to rhyme (e.g. wood, book, good) and alliteration (e.g. sun, sock, rag). The 'oddity' task revealed that children with dyslexia were significantly poorer at

Population structure of humpback whales in the western and central South Pacific Ocean as determined by vocal exchange among populations.

For cetaceans, population structure is traditionally determined by molecular genetics or photographically identified individuals. Acoustic data, however, has provided information on movement and population structure with less effort and cost than traditional methods in an array of taxa. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce a continually evolving vocal sexual display, or song, that is similar among all males in a population. The rapid cultural transmission (the transfer of information or behavior between conspecifics through social learning) of different versions of this displa

Vocal ontogeny in neotropical singing mice (Scotinomys).

Isolation calls produced by dependent young are a fundamental form of communication. For species in which vocal signals remain important to adult communication, the function and social context of vocal behavior changes dramatically with the onset of sexual maturity. The ontogenetic relationship between these distinct forms of acoustic communication is surprisingly under-studied. We conducted a detailed analysis of vocal development in sister species of Neotropical singing mice, Scotinomys teguina and S. xerampelinus. Adult singing mice are remarkable for their advertisement songs, rapidly arti

Spatial and temporal observation of phase-shift nano-emulsions assisted cavitation and ablation during focused ultrasound exposure.

BACKGROUND: Phase-shift nano-emulsions (PSNEs) with a small initial diameter in nanoscale have the potential to leak out of the blood vessels and to accumulate at the target point of tissue. At desired location, PSNEs can undergo acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) process, change into gas bubbles and enhance focused ultrasound efficiency. The threshold of droplet vaporization and influence of acoustic parameters have always been research hotspots in order to spatially control the potential of bioeffects and optimize experimental conditions. However, when the pressure is much higher than PSNEs

Tracking the expression of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission-related proteins and neuroplasticity markers after noise induced hearing loss.

Excessive exposure to loud noise can damage the cochlea and create a hearing loss. These pathologies coincide with a range of CNS changes including reorganisation of frequency representation, alterations in the pattern of spontaneous activity and changed expression of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Moreover, damage to the cochlea is often accompanied by acoustic disorders such as hyperacusis and tinnitus, suggesting that one or more of these neuronal changes may be involved in these disorders, although the mechanisms remain unknown. We tested the hypothesis that excessive noise e

Comparative evaluation of ABR abnormalities in patients with and without neurinoma of VIII cranial nerve.

Although the diagnostic reliability of auditory brainstem responses (ABR) in acoustic neuromas has been revised due to its poor sensitivity (demonstrated above all in smaller tumours), and its limited specificity, this method is still used as the initial otoneurological approach. To contribute to the clinical use of this method, in particular with the aim of reducing the number of false positives, a retrospective study was carried out in two groups of patients affected by unilateral sensorineural hearing loss with auditory brainstem response abnormalities: in the first group (50 cases: true po

Vocal efficiency measurements in subjects with vocal polyps and nodules: a preliminary report.

Vocal efficiency is a quantitative measure of the ability of the larynx to convert subglottal power to acoustic power. On the basis of the scant previous literature and clinical intuition, we tested the hypothesis that vocal efficiency, as an indicator of the functional status of the larynx, is abnormally reduced in persons with vocal nodules and polyps. Because the most difficult aspect of obtaining measures of vocal efficiency has been the determination of subglottal pressure, we applied a noninvasive airflow interruption technique for this purpose. Subjects with normal voices (n = 22), voca

Suppression tuning in noise-exposed rabbits.

Psychophysical, basilar-membrane (BM), and single nerve-fiber tuning curves, as well as suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), all give rise to frequency tuning patterns with stereotypical features. Similarities and differences between the behaviors of these tuning functions, both in normal conditions and following various cochlear insults, have been documented. While neural tuning curves (NTCs) and BM tuning curves behave similarly both before and after cochlear insults known to disrupt frequency selectivity, DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) do not necessarily

Re-evaluation of the role of the human endolymphatic sac in Menière's disease.

The role of endolymphatic sac (ES) dysfunction in the etiopathogenesis of Meniere's disease has remained controversial since the early 1900s. The first reports of the ultrastructural (transmission electron microscopy, TEM) pathology of the human ES in Meniere's disease have been published only in the last decade. These studies have been based on biopsies of the extraosseous (intradural) ES and in no cases has the TEM appearance of the intraosseous ES been described. Likewise the control material used has been from biopsies of extraosseous ES taken from patients with acoustic schwannomas. To da
