69 patients with superficial mycosis were treated with 1% Bifonazol cream once a day. 48 of them who suffered from tinea pedis interdigitalis received Bifonazol for 3 weeks, the remaining 21 patients who had superficial candidiasis applied it over a period of 4 weeks. The local tolerance of the cream has been very good. Control examinations 3 and 14 days after treatment proved 59 (89%) of all patients to be cured, i.e. 40 of those who had suffered from tinea pedis and 19 of the group with candidiasis.

Nineteen cancer patients receiving radiation therapy to the head, neck, chest wall, or abdomen were evaluated in a double-blind study to determine the effectiveness of 0.2% hydrocortisone valerate vs. placebo in reducing acute radiation dermatitis. In rats anesthetized with ethanol 4.0 g/kg i.p. the dura overlying the parietal cortex was exposed and superfused with 100% ethanol for 1 h. After 6 days survival the underlying cortex was stained with a silver method that is selective for degenerating axons and their terminals. No degeneration was found in the superfused cortex, although heat-lesioned tissue stained concurrently showed axonal degeneration and so validated the technique. Three different types of cutaneous chromomycosis, verrucous tumor type, eroded granuloma type and scaly erythematous plaque type, are reported. All these cases were successfully treated with intralesional injections of procaine-amphotericin B solution. This treatment for cutaneous chromomycosis seems to be favorable because of evident clinical efficiency without severe local or systemic side effects.

In a single-blind comparative study of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and metrifonate against onchocerciasis, 20 patient received a total dose of 6.6 g DEC over a two-week period and 20 patients each received one dose of metrifonate 10 mg/kg body weight at ten-day intervals, three times. Both the efficacy and the severity of reaction to treatment were measured. DEC proved the more effective, destroying 98.9% of the microfilarial load while metrifonate destroyed only 75.4% (assessed one week after completion of treatment). Since 1974 we have treated 59 patients suffering from unilateral and bilateral (two patients) Morbus Menière with intratympanal application of gentamycin-sulfate. In contrast to earlier attempts using this method, we did not try to destroy the vestibular apparatus, but taking into our considerations the recent findings about the pathophysiological mechanism of Morbus Menière, only to damage the secretory epithelium, thus preventing the endolymphatic hydrops. Releave from symptoms could be obtained in more than 90% of our patients.

Frey's syndrome occurs after parotid gland surgery or injury to the parotid gland and is characterized by gustatory sweating and erythema of the face upon mastication. The syndrome occurs in 50 to 60 per cent of all patients undergoing parotid surgery but the symptoms are only distressing to about 10 per cent of patients undergoing parotidectomy. Eight patients with psoriasis who had developed contact allergy to mechlorethamine hydrochloride (nitrogen mustard) were subjected to a regimen of intravenous infusion of small amounts of the drug in an attempt to produce desensitization. Although three of eight developed negative patch tests and were presumed to be desensitized, only one patient was able to use the drug therapeutically, and then only for a period of eight months, after which allergy recurred. Five patients with mycosis fungoides who had developed contact dermatitis to a nitrogen mustard, mechlorethamine hydrochloride, even in low concentrations (1 to 5 mg/100 ml), received daily total-body applications of extremely dilute solutions (0.01 to 0.1 mg/100 ml) of mechlorethamine. The concentrations of the drug were approximately doubled weekly if the patient could tolerate it, or they were raised more slowly if the patient could not. Attempts to desensitize one patient were discontinued since he was unable to tolerate a greater concentration than 1.0 mg/100 ml after trying for one year.

Once daily applications of 1.0% colchicine in hydrophilic ointment for 6 to 12 weeks produced substantial resolution of recalcitrant psoriatic plaques, especially those on the trunk. With occlusion, lower concentrations of the drug (0.25% and 0.50%) were usually effective. A thick viscous base (hydrophilic petrolatum) was more effective than a hydrophilic cream base (hydrophilic ointment), presumably because of greater occlusivity. Treatment with topically applied colchicine may be valuable when other measures fail to control localized thick plaques of psoriasis. Its use is still experimental
