Sentinel monitoring for resistance to Bt toxins in European corn borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in Canada.

Transgenic corn Zea mays (L.) producing Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal toxins (Bt corn) has successfully controlled the European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), one of the most destructive corn pests in North America, for over 25 years. However, field-evolved resistance to Cry1Fa toxin was first documented in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2018, with subsequent detections in Quebec and Manitoba. Before these discoveries, no resistance had been reported in O. nubilalis populations to Bt toxins, despite ongoing resistance monitoring mandated by regulatory agencies. Sentinel…

High levels of Bt cry toxin resistant allele frequency in South Indian populations of cotton pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella Saunders (Gelechiidae: Lepidoptera).

The lack of compliance with refugia planting by growers of transgenic cotton expressing toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a major factor contributing to the development of resistance to Bt toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab and outbreak of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella in several cotton growing regions of India. The present study estimated the resistant alleles frequency in South Indian populations of P. gossypiella against Cry1Ac + Cry2Ab toxins produced by Bt Bollgard II® cotton. Among the 33 established isofemale families, 19 laid fertile eggs and reached the F1 generation, of whic…

Development of a safe formulation that induces biofilm formation in probiotic bacteria for controlling Salmonella enteriditis Heidelberg and avian pathogenic Escherichia coli in wood shavings.

1. The aim of this study was to develop a formulation that stimulated the spontaneous formation of biofilms by probiotic bacteria, specifically Bacillus velezensis (BV), Bacillus subtilis (BS), or Lactococcus lactis subspecies lactis (LL) for control of Salmonella enteriditis Heidelberg (SH) and avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC).2. A formulation was developed to induce spontaneous biofilm formation of probiotic bacteria (BV, BS and LL) by testing various media containing minerals and polymers on polystyrene plates. The most potent probiotic strains were identified based on their efficacy in inhi…

Cross-Resistance between Cry1 Proteins in Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) May Affect the Durability of Current Pyramided Bt Maize Hybrids in Brazil.

Genetically modified plants expressing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) offer valuable options for managing insect pests with considerable environmental and economic benefits. Despite the benefits provided by Bt crops, the continuous expression of these insecticidal proteins imposes strong selection for resistance in target pest populations. Bt maize (Zea mays) hybrids have been successful in controlling fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), the main maize pest in Brazil since 2008; however, field-evolved resistance to the protein Cry1F has recently been reported. Theref…

Diversity and function of adaptive immune receptors in a jawless vertebrate.

Instead of the immunoglobulin-type antigen receptors of jawed vertebrates, jawless fish have variable lymphocyte receptors (VLRs), which consist of leucine-rich repeat (LRR) modules. Somatic diversification of the VLR gene is shown here to occur through a multistep assembly of LRR modules randomly selected from a large bank of flanking cassettes. The predicted concave surface of the VLR is lined with hypervariable positively selected residues, and computational analysis suggests a repertoire of about 10(14) unique receptors. Lamprey immunized with anthrax spores responded with the production o

A case of infectious endocarditis due to BCG.

The occurrence of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) disease following instillation for bladder cancer is commonly documented. The intravesical administration of BCG is generally safe, but may present severe complications. A fatal case of native aortic valve infectious endocarditis with septicemia due to BCG in a patient treated with intravesical instillation is reported herein.

Bilophila wadsworthia bacteremia in two patients with hepatic abscesses.

Bilophila wadsworthia, a recently described anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, was isolated from blood cultures of two patients with liver abscesses. These isolates exhibited the expected phenotypic characteristics, and identification was confirmed by cell wall fatty acid analysis by gas-liquid chromatography. This is the first documentation of bacteremia due to B. wadsworthia.

CuAAC-mediated diversification of aminoglycoside-arginine conjugate mimics by non-reducing di- and trisaccharides.

Di- and triguanidinylation of trehalose, sucrose, and melizitose has been achieved via a Huisgen-cycloaddition approach. They can serve as aminoglycoside-arginine conjugate mimics, which has been demonstrated by their biological profiles in assays against Bacillus subtilis. For comparative studies, tetraguanidinylated neamine and kanamycin derivatives have also been synthesized and evaluated.

Monochloramine inactivation of bacterial select agents.

Seven species of bacterial select agents were tested for susceptibility to monochloramine. Under test conditions, the monochloramine routinely maintained in potable water would reduce six of the species by 2 orders of magnitude within 4.2 h. Bacillus anthracis spores would require up to 3.5 days for the same inactivation with monochloramine.

CD4+ lymphocyte responses to pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in naïve and vaccinated BALB/c mice.

The Biostack experiments I and II were flown on board the Apollo 16 and 17 command modules in order to obtain information on the biological damage produced by the bombardment of heavy high-energy (HZE) particles of cosmic radiation during spaceflight. Such data are required for estimating radiation hazards in manned spaceflight. Seven biological systems in resting state (Bacillus subtilis spores, Colpoda cucullus cysts, Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, and eggs of Artemia salina, Tribolium castaneum and of Carausius morosus) were accommodated in the two Biostacks. By using a special sandwich constr…

Firing Up Glycolysis: BCG Vaccination Effects on Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

In addition to the impact of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination on antimicrobial host defence, a novel study reveals beneficial effects on glycaemic control in patients with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). These effects are ascribed to an accelerated glucose consumption in immune cells due to increased glycolysis and reduced oxidative phosphorylation.

[History and current situation of BCG vaccinations].

Vaccination using Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) discovered at the beginning of the 20th century in France, saved many lives in a period where tuberculosis was extremely widespread in our country. Mandatory for children since the 1950s, the vaccination programme has now been revised and concerns only well-defined situations considered to be at risk.
