Can we predict a "tsunami"? Symptomatic and syndromal density, mood instability and treatment intensity in people with bipolar disorders under a strict and long lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence supports the involvement of circadian rhythm disturbances in the course and morbidity of bipolar disorders (BD). During 2020, lockdown measures were introduced worldwide to contain the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, chronobiological rhythms were critically disrupted and illness outcomes were expected to worsen. The current study aimed to explore changes in morbidity among BD patients living under lockdown. METHODS: Ninety BD outpatients under naturalistic treatment conditions were followed from March to September 2020 using a mood c…

Exploring the Association Between Residual Mood Symptoms and Self-Reported Side Effects in the Euthymic Phase of Bipolar Disorders: A Cross-Sectional Network Analysis.

Introduction: Bipolar disorders (BD) are characterized by mood symptoms that can worsen medication side effects. We aimed to study the association between residual mood signs and self-reported side effects in the euthymic phase of BD. Methods: We assessed residual mood signs using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating scale (MADRS) and Young Mania Rating scale (YMRS) and self-reported side effects using the Patient-Rated Inventory of Side Effects (PRISE-M) for 880 males and 1369 females with BD. We conducted a network analysis to test the associations between 52 items of the three scales for…

Chronotype is associated with affective temperaments, clinical severity and worse treatment outcomes in bipolar disorders: results from a two-center, cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at investigating the clinical correlates of evening chronotype in a population of subjects suffering from bipolar disorders (BD). METHODS: We assessed chronotype using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. We administered the brief Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, and San Diego, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and the Alda Scale to evaluate affective temperaments, impulsiveness, and response to mood stabilisers. We performed bivariate analyses and ran a logistic regression model to analyse clinical variables associated with evening chronoty…

Clinicians' preferences and attitudes towards the use of lithium in the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorders around the world: a survey from the ISBD Lithium task force.

BACKGROUND: Lithium has long been considered the gold-standard pharmacological treatment for the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorders (BD) which is supported by a wide body of evidence. Prior research has shown a steady decline in lithium prescriptions during the last two decades. We aim to identify potential factors explaining this decline across the world with an anonymous worldwide survey developed by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Task Force "Role of Lithium in Bipolar Disorders" and distributed by diverse academic and professional international channels. RES…

Pilot project for a recovery-oriented, DBT-informed skill-building education course for families of adults with borderline personality, bipolar or major depressive disorders.

There are a variety of educational interventions for families who have a relative with a mental health disorder. However, for those with one or more emotion dysregulation disorders, there are limited options. This article reports on the results of a pilot project using a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 270 (intervention = 217, control = 53) to assess an intervention, Getting Off the Emotional Roller Coaster Skill-Building Family Education Course (GOER Family Course), for families coping with and managing emotion regulation disorders in a loved one which are often misdiagnosed or co-

Establishment of a battery of simple models for facets of bipolar disorder: a practical approach to achieve increased validity, better screening and possible insights into endophenotypes of disease.

The lack of appropriate animal models for bipolar disorder (BPD) hinders the translation of novel molecular and genetic findings into the development of new more efficient treatments. Attempts to develop a comprehensive model for BPD did not result in a practical and valid model and at present most studies utilize a limited number of models for specific components of the disorder. Whereas there is a higher availability of models for the depression pole of BPD, only a few models represent the manic pole with the most frequently used being psychostimulant-induced hyperactivity. This last model h…

A gene expression analysis of long non-coding RNAs NKILA and PACER as well as their target genes, NF-κB and cox-2 in bipolar disorder patients.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe condition characterized by periods of mania and depression. Despite advances in the neurobiology of bipolar disorder, the exact etiology of the disease remains unclear. There is evidence that Inflammation is associated with bipolar disorder. COX-2 and NF-κB are two critical mediators in the inflammatory pathways. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a new class of non-coding RNAs that play a wide range of roles, especially in developing and maintaining normal brain functions. Two lncRNAs called PACER and NKILA control the expression of COX-2 and NF-κB genes, res…

Analysis on in vitro effect of lithium on telomere length in lymphoblastoid cell lines from bipolar disorder patients with different clinical response to long-term lithium treatment.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with clinical and biological features of accelerated aging. In our previous studies, we showed that long-term lithium treatment was correlated with longer leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in BD patients. A recent study explored the role of TL in BD using patients-derived lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs), showing that baseline TL was shorter in BD compared to controls and that lithium in vitro increased TL but only in BD. Here, we used the same cell system (LCLs) to explore if a 7-day treatment protocol with lithium chlor…

Using mHealth to improve adherence and reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension and bipolar disorder (iTAB-CV): study protocol for a 2-stage randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease in individuals with mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder is highly prevalent and often poorly managed. Individuals with bipolar disorder face significant medication adherence barriers, especially when they are prescribed multiple medications for other health conditions including hypertension. Poor adherence puts them at a disproportionate risk for poor health outcomes. As such, there is a need for effective interventions to improve hypertension medication adherence, particularly in patients that struggle with adherence due to mental health comorb…
