Visible light optical coherence tomography (vis-OCT) is an emerging label-free and high-resolution 3-dimensional imaging technique that can provide retinal oximetry, angiography, and flowmetry in one modality. In this paper, we studied the organization of the arterial and venous retinal circulation in rats using vis-OCT. Arterioles were found predominantly in the superficial vascular plexus whereas veins tended to drain capillaries from the deep capillary plexus. After that, we determined the oxygen metabolic rate supported by retinal microcirculation by combining retinal vessel oxygen saturat…

Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage results from accumulation of red blood cells in the alveolar space originating from alveolar capillaries. Alveolar hemorrhage in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is rare but catastrophic and can rapidly progress to respiratory failure. We report a 22-year old lady who presented with dyspnoea on exertion, hemoptysis, bilateral leg swelling and oliguria. Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage was confirmed by bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis. Serologic tests and renal biopsy confirmed lupus nephritis. She was treated with systemic immunosuppressive therapy and plasma exchange, …

UNLABELLED: Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) affects the small arteries, arterioles, venules and capillaries in the brain and can be identified clinically and/or radiologically. We describe the case of a 71-year-old man with sporadic cerebral SVD who presented with acute paraplegia with urinary incontinence and recent cognitive impairment that developed after the occurrence of ischaemic lesions.
LEARNING POINTS: Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is extremely common and can mimic severe injury of lower motor neurons.Newer imaging techniques have significantly helped in the diagnosis of SV…

Telangiectasias are prominent small vessels (venules, capillaries or arterioles) that are visible as small red-purple focal lesions in the skin and mucous membranes. They can serve as a cutaneous marker for a number of primary (mostly hereditary) disorders and they can be secondary to other (systemic) diseases. Patients with telangiectasias are seen by general health practitioners, pediatricians, (pediatric) neurologists, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists. In this article we give an overview of the different disorders in which telangiectasias are a prominent feature, focusing on neurocutane…

A 66-year-old woman with a history of interstitial lung disease presented with a 3-month history of dropped head syndrome (DHS), followed by camptocormia and extremity weakness. A clinical examination revealed Raynaud phenomenon, arthralgia, distal skin sclerosis, and microbleeds in the nailfold capillaries. An anti-Ku antibody test was positive. A muscle biopsy revealed inflammatory myopathy with rimmed vacuoles (RVs). The diagnosis of scleroderma-polymyositis (SSc-PM) overlap syndrome was made. RVs on a muscle biopsy in a patient with inflammatory myositis involving axial muscles may be seen…

Glomangiopericytoma/sinonasal type hemangiopericytoma is a rare sinonasal neoplasm arising from the pericytes surrounding capillaries and accounts for less than 0.5% of all sinonasal tumors. This tumor differs from conventional soft tissue hemangiopericytoma in location, biologic behaviour and histologic features. Glomangiopericytoma is a borderline low malignancy tumor with a good prognosis after complete surgical resection. We report a case of 60-year-old woman who presented with progressive nasal obstruction and frequent nasal bleeding and was diagnosed as glomangiopericytoma on histopathol…

Glomangiopericytoma is classified as a borderline low malignancy tumor but recurrence rate is reported to be about 16.8%-30%, probably caused by the lack of radical resection.(1) It is a rare tumor arising from pericytes surrounding capillaries. The tumor has a predilection for the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. We report a case of glomangiopericytoma with an aim to present how it can invade and destroy both maxillary bones and lower part of nasal cavity. Due to its dimensions the tumor required extensive resection within tumor-free margins. On the basis of immunohistochemical staining th…

A 58-year-old woman presented painful chronic inflammation of the outside skin of the bilateral soles. A skin biopsy revealed chronic inflammation of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, as well as the marked dilatation and proliferation of capillaries and veins, and the thick deposition of elastic fibers around the thick-walled veins. 3-D contrasted computed tomography of the lower extremities demonstrated early bilateral imaging of the veins, and fistulas of the peroneal as well as posterior tibial artery and vein of the bilateral soles. On the basis of a diagnosis of bilateral acroangioderma…

We analyzed ultrastruciture of the cell populations in the prostate gland in chronic nonbacterial prostatitis in a chemical industry worker. It was shown that ultrastructural reorganization of the epithelium consisted in reduction of the secretory compartment of the cytoplasm and dystrophic-degenerative changes in cell organelles. Endothelial cells of the capillaries showed signs of significant degeneration and low intensity of micropinocytosis. Most of the smooth muscle cells underwent dystrophic-degenerative modifications of ultrastructural elements. The dominance of degenerative cell change…

Pseudocellulitis has been previously described with the use of chemotherapy agent gemcitabine. This condition is thought to occur due to vascular toxicity and increased localized permeability of the skin capillaries. We report herein a case of recurrent pseudocellulitis due to gemcitabine in a patient with metastatic pancreatic cancer. We believe this condition is underreported and underrecognized. Furthermore, it may be misdiagnosed as cellulitis and inappropriately treated with systemic antibiotics. As the diagnosis is clinical and the condition is self-limited, referral to other specialists…

Capillaroscopy is a method for evaluating morphological characteristics of nailfold capillaries. The simplicity, noninvasiveness and easiness-to-perform make the method accessible in everyday rheumatological practice. Raynaud's phenomenon is the main indication for performing capillaroscopy (differentiating between primary and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon) and diagnosing early stages of systemic sclerosis. According to some authors capillaroscopy should be included in the work-up algorithm for patients with puffy fingers and Raynaud's phenomenon. Other autoimmune conditions (systemic lupus e…

Lung contusion is an entity involving injury to the alveolar capillaries, without any tear or cut in the lung tissue. This results in accumulation of blood and other fluids within the lung tissue. The excess fluid interferes with gas exchange leading to hypoxia. The pathophysiology of lung contusion includes ventilation/perfusion mismatching, increased intrapulmonary shunting, increased lung water, segmental lung damage, and a loss of compliance. Clinically, patient's presents with hypoxiemia, hypercarbia and increase in laboured breathing. Patients are treated with supplemental oxygen and mec…

Three cases of adamantinoma were studied by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. In the tubular pattern, well-differentiated epithelial cells and glandular structures were present, in addition to ill-defined glands. In the basaloid pattern, less differentiated epithelial cells with discohesion were seen in the central epithelial masses. This study established the epithelial nature of some tubular structures with slit-like lumina, easily misinterpreted as capillaries by light microscopy. Results also showed that the irregular spaces observed within the basaloid pattern probably result …

A 20 years-old girl presented with multiple asymptomatic reddish vesicles on face for four years. It used to get worse in summer and was associated with localized hyperhidrosis. The lesions were notable for disappearance on diascopy. Histopathology from the vesicle showed mononuclear cell infiltration in the upper dermis, especially around eccrine sweat apparatus, along with dilatation of superficial capillaries and lymphatics. Based on clinical presentation and histopathology, diagnosis of Granulosis rubra nasi (GRN) was made. GRN usually resolves at puberty; however, rarely it may persist in…

Haemangiopericytoma is an uncommon vascular tumour of the sinonasal region with different clinical and pathological presentations. Given its origin from Zimmerman's pericytes around the capillaries, profuse bleeding during surgical manipulation is a characteristic sign. The open approach, with or without pre-operative embolisation, is therefore the usual technique for the resection of a large sinonasal haemangiopericytoma. We report on a case of haemangiopericytoma with massive unilateral involvement of the maxillary, anterior and posterior ethmoids, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses with extensio…

Collapsing glomerulopathy is a rare form of glomerular injury, characterized by segmental or global collapse of the glomerular capillaries, wrinkling and retraction of the glomerular basement membrane, and marked hypertrophy and hyperplasia of podocytes. Prognosis is usually poor, with most cases developing end-stage renal disease, in spite of treatment. The association of collapsing glomerulopathy and systemic lupus erythematosus is very unusual. In this report, we describe the first case of a simultaneous diagnosis of collapsing glomerulopathy and diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis. The c…

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is an infectious disease which occurs predominantly in immunosuppressive patients and rarely in immunocompetent individuals. We had a case of BA who presented with a red cutaneous nodule on his left leg of which histopathological examination revealed marked lobular proliferation of capillaries throughout the interstitium and clusters of bacilli with hematoxylin-eosin and Warthin-Starry stains, respectively. Antibody titer against Bartonella henselae was 1/32. The only systemic disease the patient had was chronic hepatitis B. HIV was negative and no other immunosuppr…

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by beta-amyloid plaques, tau pathology, cell death of cholinergic neurons, inflammatory processes and cerebrovascular damage. The reasons for the development of this chronic disease are not known yet. We hypothesize that chronic long lasting mild damage of the cerebrovascular brain capillaries cause hypoperfusion, acidosis and neurodegeneration, and induces a cell death cascade with beta-amyloid dysfunction and tau-pathology and inflammation. Vascular risk factors, such as hyperhomocysteinemia or hypercholesterolemia, may play a role in this process. The ac…

Organs involved by Castleman disease (CD) may be investigated by fine-needle aspiration cytology. No specific cytomorphological criteria are currently described for a definitive diagnosis. The cytological features of three fine-needle aspirations from three different lymph nodes of a patient with histologically confirmed CD of the hyaline-vascular type are herein reported, with a review of the literature. The fine-needle aspirations showed branching capillaries associated with fragments of germinal center. Review of the literature yielded 12 other case reports with over half describing similar…
