Posterior occupancy ratio-guided anterior cervical discectomy and fusion combined with unilateral biportal endoscopic decompression for pincer-type cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pincer-type cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) represents a severe clinical phenotype characterized by simultaneous spinal cord compression from both ventral and dorsal structures, frequently necessitating circumferential decompression. Although traditional single-stage combined anterior-posterior (A-P) open surgery provides adequate decompression, it is often associated with extensive surgical trauma and an elevated risk of perioperative complications. A focused literature review was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science (inception to December 31, 2025) using keywords

Unmasking the Rare: Diagnostic Challenges in Sellar Chondromyxoid Fibroma and Cervical Spine Chondrosarcoma-Two Unusual Head and Neck Cases.

Chondrogenic tumors of the head and neck are exceptionally rare and pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their clinical and radiologic resemblance to more common sellar and spinal lesions. We report two unusual cases: a chondromyxoid fibroma involving the sellar region in a 32-year-old man presenting with diplopia and headache, and a cervical spine chondrosarcoma in a 42-year-old man presenting with progressive quadriparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging in the first case revealed a well-circumscribed extra-axial sellar mass that was completely excised, with histopathology demonstrating

Diagnostic Accuracy of Scintigraphy for Detecting Morphological Variation of the Sixth Cervical Vertebral Ventral Lamina in Horses: A Retrospective Study.

Morphological variations or transposition of the ventral lamina of the sixth cervical vertebra (C6) are well documented in horses. Radiography remains the primary modality for identifying these osseous variations, whereas scintigraphy provides a functional assessment of bone activity; however, its diagnostic accuracy for this condition has not been established. This retrospective single-center study evaluated the diagnostic performance of scintigraphy compared with radiography for detecting C6/C7 ventral laminar anomalies and determined an optimal C6:C7 uptake ratio cutoff. Thirty-four horses

Perioperative central retinal artery occlusion after prone posterior cervical spine surgery treated with delayed hyperbaric oxygen therapy: a case report and targeted literature review.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare but potentially devastating cause of visual loss after non-ocular surgery. Prone spinal and posterior cervical procedures may increase ocular risk through local orbital compression, impaired venous drainage and reduced ocular perfusion. Management is particularly difficult after surgery, when diagnosis may be delayed, conventional reperfusion strategies may be impractical or relatively contraindicated, and the role of delayed hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) remains uncertain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man with

Quantitative assessment of asymptomatic spinal cord compression using MRI: a multi-center study.

Aging is associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative conditions, including degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), a leading cause of neurological disability in older adults. Asymptomatic spinal cord compression (ASCC) represents a potential precursor to DCM, characterized by spinal cord compression in individuals without overt clinical symptoms. Early identification and quantification of ASCC are critical for preventing age-related neurological decline. However, a standardized quantitative definition of ASCC remains lacking. This study aimed to develop a quantitative approach to as

Suicidal hanging with complete decapitation: A forensic case report with review of biomechanics.

Decapitation resulting from hanging is an infrequent phenomenon, often influenced by multiple biomechanical factors. We report a case of a 72-year-old male who committed suicide by hanging, leading to complete decapitation. The drop height was approximately 10.668 m, with a static nylon rope of 9 mm thickness used as ligature material. Autopsy findings showed complete severance at the cervical spine level, primarily at the junction of C4/C5 with an additional anterior hemi-transection at the C6/C7 junction. Calculations revealed axial and radial forces acting at the neck to be 534.1 N and 3354

Letter to the editor concerning "CALM1 polymorphism in degenerative cervical myelopathy of the Indian cohort" by Maheshwari S et al. (Eur spine J [2025]: doi.org/10.1007/s00586-025-09090-7).

We appreciate the efforts of Maheshwari et al. in exploring CALM1 polymorphisms in degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) within an Indian cohort. While the study offers valuable insights, we respectfully highlight certain methodological concerns-particularly regarding statistical interpretation, control group heterogeneity, and age differences between groups. Furthermore, interpretations suggesting pathogenicity for a computationally benign variant may benefit from additional functional validation. We believe that addressing these aspects in future studies will enhance the robustness and tran

Healthcare Provider Perspectives of Various Signs and Symptoms for Diagnosing Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: Results of an International, Multidisciplinary Survey.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Diagnosis of degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is frequently delayed. A lack of awareness and standardized screening criteria have been identified as major contributors. The objective of this study was to conduct a survey of international experts to determine the value of various signs and symptoms in diagnosing patients with DCM. This study forms part of a three-step initiative that aims to develop pragmatic screening criteria for DCM. METHODS: An open voluntary English-language Likert scale survey was disseminated among international networks of experts in DCM. Respo

Do cervical spine angles differ in patients with hypermobility who suffer from neck pain?

BACKROUND: There has been a noted increase in the number of patients experiencing chronic neck pain who exhibit diminished cervical lordosis upon radiographic examinations. While neck overuse contributes to this trend, early identification and treatment of predisposing factors such as hypermobility can potentially mitigate this increase. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the impact of hypermobility on cervical angles, neck disability and health quality in patients experiencing neck pain. PARTICIPANTS: Participants aged between 20 and 40 years with neck pain persisting for more than three

Neurological examination for cervical radiculopathy: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: To diagnose cervical radiculopathy according to the International Association for the Study of Pain definition, signs of neurological deficits must be examined with the neurological examination. However, the diagnostic accuracy of the standard neurological examination remains unclear, and no clear recommendations exist about standard components. Therefore, the objectives of this review are to map the research about the diagnostic accuracy, components, and performance of the neurological examination for cervical radiculopathy. METHOD: PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cinhal, DiTA databases

Endoscope-assisted Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion for the Treatment of Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common cause of cervical spinal cord disease. Spinal endoscopy offers surgical advantages such as a magnified view and a water-mediated clear surgical field. This study describes an endoscope-assisted anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedure. The addition of spinal endoscopy to traditional ACDF surgery magnifies the surgical field and allows for more precise operations, thereby improving surgical safety. Postoperatively, patients experienced significant improvements in neurological function, with no complications such as dysphagia, hem

Management of Cervical Spinal Fractures With Ankylosing Spondylitis by Single-Anterior Surgery: A Case Series Report and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical management of cervical spinal fractures accompanying ankylosing spondylitis (ASCSF) is intractable in clinical practice. There is still debate about whether surgery by a single-anterior approach is enough for treating ASCSF. The purpose of this study is to summarize and share relevant experience and lessons from both our team and the literature. METHODS: Patients referred to our center for ASCSF following single-anterior surgery (from January 2008 to December 2020) were distinguished and enrolled. In addition, literature published from 2000 to 2021 on PubMed and Web of Sci

Management of Cervical lateral mass fractures -A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: A notable anatomic feature of the facet joint is the lateral mass, which is comprised of the superior and inferior articular processes of the vertebral body. A unique fracture pattern involves a lamina fracture and ipsilateral pedicle fracture resulting in a separation of the lateral mass from the vertebral body, called a floating lateral mass fracture (FLM). FLMs commonly co-occur with vertebral artery or neurologic injury and is usually managed surgically. Few studies have focused on FLMs alone; thus, the objective of the current study is to provide a systematic review regardin

Retrospective radiographic myelogram measurements and long-term outcomes in horses undergoing cervical interbody fusion surgery: 22 cases.

Site selection for cervical stabilization surgery in horses with spinal ataxia frequently relies on measurements derived from radiographic myelography. A variety of measurement criteria exist and can provide conflicting results. The main objectives of this study were to assess the correlation between two commonly used myelographic measures, dorsal contrast column reduction (DCCR) and dural diameter reduction (DDR), and their association with previously selected operative sites in a population of horses operated at a tertiary clinic. Secondary objectives were to determine if articular process j
