Palmtop computer-assisted group therapy for social phobia.

This article describes the application of group computer-assisted therapy for social phobia. The computer program includes a diary function for ongoing self-monitoring of anxiety as well as guidance on the practice of relaxation, cognitive restructuring, and self-control desensitization. Although the program was originally designed to treat individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), it was hypothesized that the program also would be effective for individuals with social phobia; therefore, it was implemented in a group of individuals with a primary diagnosis of GAD or social phobia. Exercise and volunteer work: contexts for AD language and memory interventions.

This article describes two novel contexts for language and memory stimulation in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD): student-supervised physical exercise and partnered volunteering at community agencies. Information presented is based on 5 years of the authors' experiences at the University of Arizona supervising student-administered interventions with mildly to moderately affected home-dwelling AD patients in the Volunteers in Partnership and Elder Rehab programs. The authors report significant mood and fitness improvements by program participants, as measured on direct testing as well

Artificial intelligence, the magic circle, and CBT: a Wizard-of-Oz framework for adjunctive treatment.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of evidence-based psychological treatment, but its implementation continues to be limited by poor patient adherence and shortages of clinical resources. At the same time, most applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and games in mental health have focused on direct intervention, although the evidence base remains underdeveloped and AI has important limitations in diagnosis and treatment decisions. In response, this article proposes a Wizard-of-Oz (WoZ) framework for adjunctive treatment that positions AI and board games as tools that sup…

From Goals to Gains: Therapy Goal Selection, Attainment, and Their Association With Psychotherapy Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Therapy goals are central to psychotherapeutic interventions. While symptom-specific goals are commonly emphasized, patients often set diverse goals that may not align with standardized symptom measures. This study examines how patient characteristics are associated with the selection of specific therapy goal content categories and whether attainment in these domains shows associations with different psychotherapy outcomes. METHOD: Therapy goals from 645 patients undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy in an outpatient clinic were categorized using the Bern Inventory of Treatment

SIRT1 Mediates H2S-Ameliorated Diabetes-Associated Cognitive Dysfunction in Rats: Possible Involvement of Inhibiting Hippocampal Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Synaptic Dysfunction.

Diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction (DACD) characterized by hippocampal injury increases the risk of major cerebrovascular events and death. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and synaptic dysfunction play vital roles in the pathological process. At present, no specific treatment exists for the prevention and/or the therapy of DACD. We have recently reported that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exhibits therapeutic potential for DACD, but the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) has been shown to play a role in regulating the progression of dia

Remote Ischemic Postconditioning Improve Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Induced Cognitive Dysfunction through Suppressing Mitochondrial Apoptosis in Hippocampus via TK/BK/B2R-Mediated PI3K/AKT.

Remote ischemic postconditioning (RIPostC) is known to improve motor function recovery in animal models, but its efficacy in alleviating cognitive impairment caused by ischemic stroke remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the beneficial role of RIPostC in recovering cognitive impairment induced by cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). Building upon our previous research findings, we proved that the TK/BK/B2R pathway is crucial for understanding the crosstalk between cognitive impairment and RIPostC. Additionally, in vitro experiments were conducted using the oxygen glucose dep

Trauma in Attachment: Understanding the First Relationship Through Neurobiology and Psychodynamics.

Much has been elucidated about the neurobiological effects of early childhood trauma and its transgenerational transmission, although its integration into psychodynamic therapy has been challenging. Here we focus on a common area of interest to both areas-emotion and cognition rooted in past trauma experiences and how these experiences produce maladaptive behaviors transmitted to the next generation through parenting behaviors. We explore two mammalian research paradigms of early-life trauma explicitly within attachment, and transmission of transgenerational pathology through the caregiver to

Targeting AARS1-dependent lactylation improves neuronal process plasticity and mitigates cognitive deficits in sepsis-associated encephalopathy.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a frequent and severe neurological complication of systemic infection, strongly associated with long-term cognitive impairment.1 Despite its clinical significance, no targeted therapies are currently available. In this study, we established a murine model of sepsis using cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and identified a metabolic pathway in which lactate accumulation drives neuronal process injury through aberrant activation of the ATRIP-ATR signaling axis. During sepsis, AARS1-the primary lactyltransferase responsible for lactylation in neuronal proc

Memory decline, anxiety and depression in the mouse model of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder, caused by an expansion of polyglutamine in the ataxin-3 protein. SCA3 symptoms include progressive motor decline caused by an atrophy of the cerebellum and brainstem. However, it was recently reported that SCA3 patients also suffer from the cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome. The majority of SCA3 patients exhibit cognitive decline and approximately half of them suffer from depression and anxiety. The necessity to find a combined therapy for both motor and cognitive deficits in a SCA3 mouse model is required

Behavioral, Psychiatric, and Cognitive Adverse Events in Older Persons Treated with Glucocorticoids.

Background: Since the introduction of glucocorticoids (GCs) in the physician's pharmacological arsenal, it has been known that they are a cause of behavioral or psychiatric adverse events (BPAE), as well as of cognitive problems. To the best of our knowledge, the relationship between these adverse events and GCs in older persons has never been evaluated, except through case-reports or series with few cases. In this paper, a review of the literature regarding BPAEs and cognitive disorders in older people treated with CSs is undertaken. Methods: A comprehensive literature search for BPAEs was ca

Longitudinal identification of clinically distinct neurophenotypes in young children with fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), due to mutations of the FMR1 gene, is the most common known inherited cause of developmental disability. The cognitive, behavioral, and neurological phenotypes observed in affected individuals can vary considerably, making it difficult to predict outcomes and determine the need for interventions. We sought to examine early structural brain growth as a potential marker for identification of clinically meaningful subgroups. Participants included 42 very young boys with FXS who completed a T1-weighted anatomical MRI and cognitive/behavioral assessment at two longitudinal

Selenium Nanoparticles as an Efficient Nanomedicine for the Therapy of Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an incurable disease with progressive loss of neural function, which is influenced by epigenetic, oxidative stress, metabolic, and nutritional factors. Targeting inhibition of huntingtin protein aggregation is a strategy for HD therapy, but the efficacy is unsatisfactory. Studies found that selenium (Se) levels in the brain are insufficient for HD disease individuals, while improvement in Se homeostasis in the brain may attenuate neuronal loss and dysfunction. In this study, we applied selenium nanoparticles (NPs) (Nano-Se) for the HD disease therapy by regulating

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy alleviates vascular dysfunction and amyloid burden in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model and in elderly patients.

Vascular dysfunction is entwined with aging and in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and contributes to reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) and consequently, hypoxia. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is in clinical use for a wide range of medical conditions. In the current study, we exposed 5XFAD mice, a well-studied AD model that presents impaired cognitive abilities, to HBOT and then investigated the therapeutical effects using two-photon live animal imaging, behavioral tasks, and biochemical and histological analysis. HBOT increased arteriolar luminal diameter and elevated CBF, thu

Endocrinology of menopausal transition and its brain implications.

The central nervous system is one of the main target tissues for sex steroid hormones, which act on both through genomic mechanisms, modulating synthesis, release, and metabolism of many neuropeptides and neurotransmitters, and through non-genomic mechanisms, influencing electrical excitability, synaptic function, morphological features, and neuron-glia interactions. During the climacteric period, sex steroid deficiency causes many neuroendocrine changes. At the hypothalamic level, estrogen withdrawal gives rise to vasomotor symptoms, to eating behavior disorders, and altered blood pressure co
