Risk factors for post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL): Challenges in understanding pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) occurs mainly in Eastern Africa (EA) and the Southeast Asia region (SEAR), but with important differences. In EA PKDL occurs in young children shortly after treatment of VL (within 1-13 months) when the immune response to leishmania is developing. In contrast, in the SEAR VL and PKDL occur in adolescents and young adults with an interval of 1-4 years or more after successful VL treatment with possible downgrading of the immune response. The risk factors for PKDL in both regions are poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From a

Epstein-Barr Virus and Human Papillomavirus Co-Infections in Epithelial Carcinomas.

Co-infection of EBV and HPV is reported across head-and-neck, cervical, and breast carcinomas, though prevalence estimates vary due to regional differences, low viral copy numbers, and spatial heterogeneity of infected cells. Although more studies are needed, viral co-infection can influence the tumor immune microenvironment and replace mutations through viral oncogene activity or epigenetic changes in tumor progression. A few studies have shown that HPV-immortalization alters the outcome of EBV epithelial infections. In turn, EBV infection may enhance HPV integration and persistence. Thus, un

Integrated pathological and molecular characterisation of respiratory disease in extensively reared Sicilian Black pigs: detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, porcine circovirus type 2, and concurrent pulmonary silicosis.

The Sicilian Black pig is a well-adapted autochthonous breed, yet its susceptibility to respiratory disease remains poorly defined due to limited data on pathogen circulation and lesion patterns in extensive production systems. This study characterised the pathological features of Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex (PRDC) in this breed by examining lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes from 59 animals through pathological assessment, molecular detection of major respiratory pathogens, and evaluation of crystalline particulates using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive

Association of Different Diagnostic Methods Used to Identify Coccidiosis in Broiler Chickens and Potentially Associated Bacterial Lesions.

Coccidiosis is a major avian enteropathy caused by Eimeria spp., and mixed infections can hinder diagnosis due to overlapping lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of coccidiosis in broiler chickens through characterization of gross and histopathologic lesions, parasitologic identification, and investigation of potentially associated bacterial infections. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 28 flocks housed in positive-pressure ventilated poultry houses, with a sample of 280 broilers collected at two time points: sampling 1 (21 to 28 days of age) and sampling 2 (35 to 42 da

Understanding the association between immune-modulating helminths and HPV or cervical cancer: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer disproportionately affects people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While access to effective preventive interventions explains some of the disparity, biological causes cannot be ruled out as important contributors to the observed disparities in cervical cancer outcomes. Since chronic infection with helminths which cause immune dysregulation and suppress anti-viral responses is common in LMICs, we sought to review the available epidemiologic evidence evaluating associations between helminth infection and HPV infection and/or cervical cancer. Proteome profiling of the lung tissues of the mice co-infected with H9N2 influenza A virus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

H9N2 Influenza A virus (IAV) can contribute to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) superinfection, causing severe pneumonia. But the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, to investigate molecular ecology of the lung tissues co-infected with H9N2 IAV and P. aeruginosa, the mouse models were developed to analyze proteome of the lung tissues. As a result, the differential proteins of the lungs sampled from the mice with single H9N2 IAV infection, single P. aeruginosa infection and co-infection with H9N2 IAV and P. aeruginosa were related to immune responses, cell proliferation a

Proteomic Profiling Identifies MARCO in Extracellular Vesicles, as a Potential Biomarker for Leishmaniasis in HIV Co-Infection.

Leishmania is an intracellular protozoan parasite that causes leishmaniasis, a disease prevalent in 97 countries. Co-infection with HIV increases susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis (VL), accelerating HIV's progression to AIDS. Managing VL in HIV-infected individuals is challenging due to atypical presentations and limited therapeutic responses, highlighting the need to develop new disease management strategies. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) hold great promise for this goal as they can be used for a higher understanding of biological processes and biomarker discovery. In this context, a pr
