Eosinophilic myenteric ganglionitis (EMG) is a rare pathologic finding within the Auerbach myenteric plexus characterized by eosinophilic infiltration on light microscopy. The plexus's ultimate obliteration results in chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO). EMG is almost exclusively seen in the pediatric population. In this case a patient presented with an intrauterine device (IUD) which was displaced into the sigmoid. The IUD was successfully removed through a proctoscope under laparoscopic guidance. Displacement of IUD into the sigmoid is a rare complication and should be treated proactively.

The number of myenteric neurons may be reduced by topical serosal application of benzalkonium chloride (BAC). We studied the effects of ageing in the population of neurons that survive after the application of BAC.
