The aim of this overview article is to present the current possibilities of radionuclide scintigraphic small intestine imaging. Nuclear medicine has a few methods-scintigraphy with red blood cells labelled by means of (99m)Tc for detection of the source of bleeding in the small intestine, Meckel's diverticulum scintigraphy for detection of the ectopic gastric mucosa, radionuclide somatostatin receptor imaging for carcinoid, and radionuclide inflammation imaging. Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastro-intestinal tract (approximately 2% of population), and arises from improper closure and absorption of the omphalomesenteric duct. A case of tubular colonic duplication, sigmoid colon diverticulum, and lumbar anterior spina bifida in a 28-year-old man was diagnosed as split notochord syndrome. After subtotal colectomy, including the duplicated colon, the patient recovered. Histologic study of the duplicated colon revealed multifocal, ectopic gastric fundic mucosa in a mosaic pattern. The ileosigmoid knot (ISK) is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. Unfamiliarity with the condition could have disastrous consequence at surgery. Over the past 20 years, we have encountered seven cases. Analyzing the data gathered from these, and on reviewing the literature, we found it possible to arrive at a preoperative diagnosis in two patients.
