BACKGROUND: Costochondritis (CC) is a common, but poorly understood condition among patients with chest wall pain. We have prospectively analyzed distinctive features of patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain and CC.

The possibility of HSV encephalitis presenting mainly or solely with psychiatric symptoms is highlighted. During the 1980s, there was 2 prominent changes in family planning: more women went to general practitioners (GPs) for contraceptive advice and there was an upturn in the use of condoms due to safer sex campaigns in the mid-80s. If unrecognized and/or untreated, malignant hyperthermia can be fatal. Over a 7-year period, 9443 trauma patients were evaluated with 2934 (31%) sustaining chest trauma. Of these, 347 (12%) patients required thoracotomy, with 12 patients undergoing emergency lung resection. Mean age was 23.1 years with mean Injury Severity Score of 32. OBJECTIVE: Peripartum hysterectomy at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center was reviewed and associated risk factors were identified.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive and cohort analysis from January 1985 to June 1990 was carried out. Adjusted relative risks for hysterectomy with 95% confidence intervals for identified risk factors were calculated where possible.

From November 1, 1990 to January 31, 1991, 381 patients visited our emergency unit with the chief complaints of hematemesis (n = 153) and melena (n = 228). Of these patients, 298 (78.2%) received UGI endoscopy at the emergency unit, 29 (7.6%) received examination after they were admitted to wards, 3 (0.8%) received endoscopy at outpatient clinic and 51 (13.4%) did not have endoscopy. An experience with treatment of 3160 patients with acute paraproctitis under conditions of a specialized department is presented. Rational curative methods allow to achieve healing of 2280 patients (72.2%) with small amount of complications (22 cases). The duration of treatment was shortened to 11.2 days. No recurrences were noted.
