Anodal and cathodal tDCS modulate neural activity and selectively affect GABA and glutamate syntheses in the visual cortex of cats.

KEY POINTS: The present study showed that anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can respectively increase and decrease the amplitude of visually evoked field potentials in the stimulated visual cortex of cats, with the effect lasting for ∼60-70 min. We directly measured tDCS-induced changes in the concentration of inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters in the visual cortex using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method and showed that anodal and cathodal tDCS can selectively decrease the concentration of GABA and glutamate in the stimulated cortical area.

OPA1-related auditory neuropathy: site of lesion and outcome of cochlear implantation.

Hearing impairment is the second most prevalent clinical feature after optic atrophy in dominant optic atrophy associated with mutations in the OPA1 gene. In this study we characterized the hearing dysfunction in OPA1-linked disorders and provided effective rehabilitative options to improve speech perception. We studied two groups of OPA1 subjects, one comprising 11 patients (seven males; age range 13-79 years) carrying OPA1 mutations inducing haploinsufficiency, the other, 10 subjects (three males; age range 5-58 years) carrying OPA1 missense mutations. Both groups underwent audiometric asses

Amelioration of motor/sensory dysfunction and spasticity in a rat model of acute lumbar spinal cord injury by human neural stem cell transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Intraspinal grafting of human neural stem cells represents a promising approach to promote recovery of function after spinal t … ssed using open field locomotion scoring, thermal/tactile pain/escape thresholds and myogenic motor evoked potentials. The presence of spasticity was measured by gastrocnemius muscle resistance and electromyography response during computer-controlled ankle rotation. At the end-point, gait (CatWalk), ladder climbing, and single frame analyses were also assessed. Syr …

Automatic audiometry using auditory steady-state response and sequential test strategy applied to volunteers with normal hearing.

PURPOSE: In the present study, a new procedure to perform automatic audiometry using multifrequency Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) is proposed. METHODS: The automatic audiometry procedure consists of detecting the presence of multifrequency ASSR in real-time using the sequential test strategy and by adjusting the stimulus intensity independently. The ASSR audiometric thresholds of 18 adult volunteers with normal hearing were determined by automatically (four simultaneous frequencies per ear) at modulation frequencies in the 80 Hz range. The exam time and the difference between ASSR thr

Ménière's disease review 2005.

Ménière's disease (MD) is a complex, multifactorial disorder of the inner ear that is the most common cause of the syndrome of episodic vertigo combined with fluctuating hearing loss. In spite of a century of investigation, the etiology and pathophysiology of MD remain controversial and incompletely understood. Among the factors that have contributed to these controversies are the absence of (1) a validated clinical test, (2) an appropriate animal model, and (3) a specific treatment. Nonetheless, physicians are able to assist MD patients with a variety of tailored, symptom-specific medications

Ownership and agency modulate self-positivity effect: Behavioral and neural evidence.

In value assessment, the self-positivity effect refers to the tendency to assign higher value to self-related objects. However, the distinct and interactive contributions of ownership and agency to this effect remain unclear. Across four behavioral studies (total N = 137) and an event-related potentials (ERP) study (N = 30), we manipulated ownership and agency using an object evaluation paradigm while recording subjective value ratings and P300 amplitudes. Results showed that ownership enhanced valuation, whereas agency influenced valuation only when the object was already self-owned, with the

Age-related hearing loss begins with gain, not silence: physiological compensation in dorsal cochlear nucleus fusiform cells during auditory aging.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most common cause of sensorineural hearing loss. The cochlear nucleus, the first central auditory structure to receive input from the cochlea, has been shown to be disrupted by ARHL. Fusiform cells (FCs), the principal output cell of the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN), mature physiologically during hearing onset. Specifically, FCs increase in the rate of action potential (AP) rise and decay, stabilizing by postnatal day 14 (P14) in mice. However, whether FC intrinsic electrophysiological properties or morphological characteristics continue to change throug

Baseline long-term potentiation-like cortical plasticity is associated with longitudinal cortical thinning in healthy adults and in adults with bipolar disorder type II.

The precise neurobiological processes underlying cerebral cortical thinning in aging and psychiatric illnesses remain undetermined, yet aging- and synaptic dysfunction-related loss of synapses are potentially important mechanisms. We used long-term potentiation-like plasticity of the visual evoked potential as an index of synaptic function in the cortex and hypothesized that plasticity at baseline would be negatively associated with future cortical thinning in healthy adults and in adults with bipolar disorder type II. Thirty-two healthy adults and 15 adults with bipolar disorder type II under

Phase Locking of Auditory-Nerve Fibers Reveals Stereotyped Distortions and an Exponential Transfer Function with a Level-Dependent Slope.

Phase locking of auditory-nerve-fiber (ANF) responses to the fine structure of acoustic stimuli is a hallmark of the auditory system's temporal precision and is important for many aspects of hearing. Period histograms from phase-locked ANF responses to low-frequency tones exhibit spike-rate and temporal asymmetries, but otherwise retain an approximately sinusoidal shape as stimulus level increases, even beyond the level at which the mean spike rate saturates. This is intriguing because apical cochlear mechanical vibrations show little compression, and mechanoelectrical transduction in the rece

An autopsied case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with the lateral geniculate body lesion showing antagonizing correlation between periodic synchronous discharges and photically induced giant evoked responses.

We reported an necropsy finding of a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) who showed photo-stimulated giant spikes that simultaneously suppressed periodic synchronous discharges (PSD) and the loss of pupillary light reflex during the course of the illness. The necropsy revealed extensive gray and white matter lesions, and both the lateral geniculate body (LGB) and pregeniculate body were primarily affected. The superior colliculus, optic nerve and tracts were not affected. The cerebral cortices particularly of the occipital lobe were severely damaged. The Gennari line, however, was spa

[Complex frequency-selective properties of the fibers of the acoustic nerve in the pigeon].

Frequency-selectivity properties of 198 single auditory fibres in the pigeon were investigated by means of an automatic method. Spontaneous activity in 56 of them innervating hair cells with oscillatory membrane potential changes could be inhibited by single-frequency stimuli (one-tone inhibition). Inhibition areas lay above (45%), below (7%) or on both sides (48%) of their characteristic frequencies (CFs). Input-output functions at inhibitory frequencies were nonmonotonic, while they were always monotonic at best frequencies near CF. One-tone inhibition was not observed in the remaining 142 f

Differential effects of ischaemia and hyperkalaemia on myocardial repolarization and conduction times in the dog.

The role of increased extracellular K+ concentration ([K+]o) in the production of the early electrophysiological changes induced by myocardial ischaemia, was evaluated by recordings of monophasic action potentials and the paced endocardial evoked response. Changes in the duration of local repolarization and conduction time were evaluated during ischaemia, K+ infusion and hypoxia. Raising [K+]o levels in systemic arterial blood from 3.4 +/- 0.5 mmol l-1 to 5.9 +/- 1.5 mmol l-1 produced a similar shortening of repolarization as was seen during ischaemia. Prolongation of conduction time occurred
