Outcomes of Pediatric Facial Laceration Repair Using 5-0 Fast Absorbing Gut Sutures With and Without Overlying Adhesive Strips: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: A randomized controlled trial was designed to compare 2 methods of repairing simple pediatric facial lacerations. We hypothesized that wounds repaired with 5-0 fast-absorbing gut sutures and overlying adhesive strips would be superior with regard to cosmetic outcome compared with 5-0 fast-absorbing gut sutures alone. METHODS: Patients 0 to 17 years old presenting to the emergency department with simple, linear facial lacerations requiring repair with sutures were eligible for enrollment. Patients were randomly assigned to repair with either 5-0 fast-absorbing gut sutures with over

Comparison of head & facial skin wound healing complications with GLUBRAN® Tiss 2 skin adhesive Vs Non-absorbable nylon suture.

BACKGROUND: Wound healing is an essential process for the body to repair damaged tissue and restore normal function. Over the years, there have been advancements in wound closure techniques, with skin adhesive and sutures being two common methods. In this article, we will evaluate the healing complications associated with GLUBRAN® Tiss 2 (2-cyanoacrylate) skin adhesive in comparison to traditional sutures. METHOD: The study was a randomized control trial. In the control group, sutures were used with six zero nylon threads. In the intervention group, GLUBRAN® Tiss 2 skin adhesive was applied u

Opioid Use among Adolescents Undergoing Surgical Repair of Facial Trauma.

BACKGROUND: New persistent opioid use has been quantified among adults undergoing surgery; less is known about the risk among adolescents. The authors examine new persistent opioid use in opioid-naive adolescent patients who underwent operative repair of facial fractures. METHODS: Using the IBM MarketScan Commercial Database, the authors performed a retrospective analysis of patients aged 11 to 17 years who underwent facial fracture repair between 2006 and 2015. The incidences of prolonged opioid use and potentially inappropriate opioid prescriptions were determined. RESULTS: Of 4892 patient

Macrophages in trigeminal ganglion contribute to ectopic mechanical hypersensitivity following inferior alveolar nerve injury in rats.

BACKGROUND: Accidental mandibular nerve injury may occur during tooth extraction or implant procedures, causing ectopic orofacial pain. The exact mechanisms underlying ectopic orofacial pain following mandibular nerve injury is still unknown. Here, we investigated the role of macrophages and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) in ectopic orofacial pain following inferior alveolar nerve transection (IANX). METHODS: IANX was performed and the mechanical head-withdrawal threshold (MHWT) in the whisker pad skin ipsilateral to IANX was measured for 15 days. Expressio

Safety and effectiveness of focused cold therapy for the treatment of hyperdynamic forehead wrinkles.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of patients exploring treatments for wrinkle reduction, have reservations about toxins. Therefore, a nonsurgical, minimally invasive, and toxin-free approach to eliminate facial hyperdynamic lines is desirable. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical safety and effectiveness of focused cold therapy (FCT) for the reduction of hyperdynamic forehead wrinkles. METHODS: Forty-one subjects received FCT to temporal branches of the facial nerve. Hyperdynamic forehead wrinkles were assessed by the investigator and subject before treatment, immediately after procedure, and at 7

The intranasal endoscopic removal of schwannoma of the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae via the prelacrimal recess approach.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to analyze the results of a novel surgical method-the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (PLRA)-in patients with tumors involving the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and infratemporal fossa (ITF). The surgical technique and indications for this approach are also discussed. METHODS: The authors analyzed data from 7 cases involving patients who underwent resection of PPF and ITF tumors by means of the endoscopic PLRA from 2004 to 2013. Preoperative and postoperative imaging studies were available in all cases and were reviewed. The surgical specimens were al

Developmental malformation of primary and permanent dentition: a rare sequel of trauma.

Dentofacial injuries that occur prior to the eruption of primary teeth can result in developmental disturbances not only in the primary but also in permanent dentition. Here we report a rare case of long term sequelae of trauma in a female child of 4 to 5 months of age which resulted in dilaceration and impaction of maxillary primary central incisors and subsequent enamel hypoplasia of the permanent maxillary central incisors.

Thoracoacromial artery perforator flap: anatomical basis and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Concerns and criticism have been reported on the feasibility and vascular reliability of the thoracoacromial artery perforator flap because of the inconsistent size of the pectoral branch of the thoracoacromial artery and its cutaneous perforators. The authors have investigated its vascular basis through a cadaver dissection and described their clinical experience in the surgical strategy, range of application, and indications for the thoracoacromial artery perforator flap. METHODS: Twelve fresh human cadavers were dissected to define the anatomy of the branches of the thoracoacro

Mantle design: a composite construct for orbital floor reconstruction.

We present a unique case of orbital floor and wall reconstruction after complete destruction by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The complex comminuted fracture was repaired using a composite construct design (the mantle design) that was fixed in place using mini plates and screws. The designed composite graft was shaped exactly to fit the area of the orbital floor and maxilla to create stability and support for the globe. The orbital floor and maxilla were repaired using this special design, which was created based on the basic physical principles of mantle constructs that have been known for m

A report of post-traumatic Eagle's Syndrome.

This paper reports the case of a 39-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of Eagle's Syndrome and an ossified stylohyoid ligament (SHL). Symptoms had developed immediately after trauma to the neck. No injury to the SHL was radiologically observable, but the causal relationship between the trauma and the occurrence of symptoms was evident. A new symptom of Eagle's Syndrome mimicking osteoathrosis of the temporomandibular joint was observed. The risk of misdiagnosis of temporomandibular disorders and the etiological role of neck trauma in Eagle's Syndrome are discussed.

[Water-jet dissection in parotid surgery--initial clinical results].

INTRODUCTION: The most frequent complication following parotidectomies is postoperative facial nerve dysfunction. In animal experiment we successfully studied the technique of water-jet-dissection for safe and functional preservation in facial nerve dissection in parotid gland surgery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate our animal experiments clinically. METHODS: Until November '99 ten patients with benign parotid gland tumors (4 female, 6 male, age 32-77 years) underwent lateral or latero-segmental parotidectomies using water-jet-dissection ("Hydro-Jet", Andreas Pein Medizintechnik

Atypical incisive nerve: clinical report.

A 68-year-old Caucasian man complained of discomfort from two implants placed in the anterior mandibular area. Examination of cross-sectional computerized tomography images revealed the passage of a distinct structure, surrounded by cortical bone, which extended from the right mental foramen anteriorly and passed through the lower part of the right and left implants. The structure, which was identified as the incisive nerve, also emerged from the left mental foramen and advanced toward the midline. This nerve plexus is usually delicate and not detectable by conventional radiography or computer

Traumatic aneurysms of the internal carotid artery at the base of the skull. Two cases treated surgically.

Internal carotid aneurysms at the base of the skull after blunt trauma are infrequent but their management is difficult, leading many surgeons to only attempt ligation. We report 2 cases presenting with high traumatic aneurysms, following motorcycle accidents. The 2 aneurysms underwent repair by a venous graft. The petrous portion of the carotid artery was approached and controlled by an ENT surgeon. This "infratemporal" approach was used exposing the facial nerve, combined with temporary anterior sub-luxation of the temporomaxillary joint to expose the lower part of the carotid canal which wa

Frontal plagiocephaly: synostotic, compensational, or deformational.

Plagiocephaly is a term commonly used to describe congenital forehead asymmetry. Sixty patients with frontal plagiocephaly were evaluated retrospectively and separated into three types: synostotic (N = 24), compensational (N = 3), and deformational (N = 33). Categorization of frontal plagiocephaly as synostotic or deformational was reliably made by physical examination, focusing on the supraorbital rims, nasal root, ears, and malar eminences. Other anatomic parameters useful in the differential diagnosis included chin point, palpebral fissures, and facial height. This study documented that bir
