The effects of fenofibrate on metabolic and vascular changes induced by chocolate-supplemented diet in the rat.

Current evidences suggest that diet per se plays an important role in genesis of metabolic and vascular function abnormalities. We have investigated the effects of addition of a high-fat diet (chocolate) in the presence or absence of short-term (7 days) administration of fenofibrate on metabolic and vascular changes in adult male Wistar rats. Despite similarities in total body weight in all groups, compared with control fed groups, chocolate-supplemented animals had significantly higher plasma triacylglyceride and non-esterified fatty acids and leptin (for all, P<0.01), but not glucose or insu

Insulin resistance in HIV-related lipodystrophy.

Lipodystrophy (LD) associated with HIV infection is a syndrome of abnormal fat distribution observed in HIV-infected patients treated with various antiretroviral agents. In addition, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia can occur in HIV-infected patients with or without LD. The demonstration of the latter metabolic disorders in normal subjects using protease inhibitors suggests that these agents could play a causative role in their development independently of HIV status. Possible mechanisms whereby protease inhibitors can hinder insulin actions include inhibition of glucose transporter isoform

Distribution of lipid formulations of amphotericin B into bone marrow and fat tissue in rabbits.

The distribution of the three currently available lipid formulations of amphotericin B (AmB) into bone marrow and fat tissue was evaluated in noninfected rabbits. Groups of four animals each received either 1 mg of AmB deoxycholate (D-AmB) per kg of body weight per day or 5 mg of AmB colloidal dispersion, AmB lipid complex, or liposomal AmB per kg per day for seven doses. Plasma, bone marrow, fat, and liver were collected at autopsy, and AmB concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. At the investigated dosages of 5 mg/kg/day, all AmB lipid formulations achieved

Body mass, training, menses, and bone in adolescent runners: a 3-yr follow-up.

UNLABELLED: Endurance runners with low bone mass during adolescence may risk attaining a low peak bone mineral density (BMD) in adulthood. Alternatively, they may mature late and undergo delayed bone mineral accumulation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 40 adolescent runners (aged 15.9 ± 0.2 yr) at two time points, approximately 3 yr apart, to assess bone mass status and identify variables associated with bone mass change. METHODS: Follow-up measures included a questionnaire to assess menstrual status, training, and sports participation history, height and weight, and a du

Adherence to the Eatwell Guide and associations with markers of adiposity: a prospective analysis within the UK Biobank cohort.

BACKGROUND: Obesity remains a major public health concern in the UK, contributing towards increased disease risk and premature mortality. The Eatwell Guide - the UK's health eating model - is widely applied in policy and practice, yet evidence linking adherence to this dietary pattern with adiposity is limited. Similarly, understanding whether associations differ across population subgroups, including by level of genetic risk for obesity, is essential to inform equitable and effective dietary guidance. METHODS: In 156,764 participants from the UK Biobank, we explored cross-sectional and prosp

Body composition and aging among Tibetan adults living at high altitude: A cross-sectional study of 1,318 participants.

OBJECTIVES: Most studies investigating age-related body composition patterns focus on low-altitude populations, and whether findings from these studies apply to high-altitude populations under chronic hypoxia remains unclear. This study investigated age-related body composition patterns among native Tibetan adults from the Tibetan Plateau, exploring associations with sex and altitude. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 1318 native Tibetan adults (20-85 yr) via cluster random sampling from three regions (2800, 3650, and 4500 m) in Xizang. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASM

Relationship between cattle age and tongue tenderness, color life, intramuscular fat content, and palatability outcomes.

We evaluated the relationship of dental age at harvest on color life and palatability of beef tongues from cull dairy cows. Tongues (n = 60) were procured at harvest from carcasses exhibiting 2, 4, 6, or 8 permanent incisors (PI). Tongues were separated into root and body locations, sliced into samples 5-mm-thick, trimmed to remove epithelial surface tissue, and allocated to uncooked or cooked Allo-Kramer shear force (AKSF), 108 h of simulated retail display, intramuscular fat (IMF) determination, or trained sensory evaluation. Data were analyzed using a split-plot experimental design and a on

Body composition-derived principal components partially explain sex and age effects on bone mineral density in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) often exhibit high fracture risk. While body composition critically influences bone mineral density (BMD), the specific independent roles of its interrelated components (muscle vs. fat) remain poorly characterized in T2DM. This study aimed to disentangle these correlated phenotypes and quantify their distinct associations with BMD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study at the Second Hospital of Jilin University, 424 adults with T2DM were assessed. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and body composition by bioelectrical

Knee Osteoarthritis and Metabolic Disorders: Practical Aspects from Primary Healthcare.

Background/Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders worldwide, causing pain and disability. In addition to mechanical overload, increasing evidence suggests that metabolic disorders and abdominal obesity may contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of OA through mild inflammation and metabolic dysregulation. Methods: This cross-sectional, single-center study included 108 patients with radiologically confirmed KOA and 33 control subjects aged 45-80 years. KOA severity was assessed using the Kellgren-Lawrence scale and the Osteoarthritis Res

Comparison of preoperative urinary Titin levels and serum Titin levels in patients with gastrointestinal malignancy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, reports using urinary Titin (U-Titin) levels to evaluate patients with muscular dystrophy, myocardial infarction, myasthenia gravis, gastrointestinal malignancy (GIM), chronic liver disease, and sarcopenia have been sporadically observed; however, reports using serum Titin (S-Titin) levels are scarce. We report here on the measurement of S-Titin, which has now become feasible. METHODS: This study included 104 patients who underwent surgery for the diagnosis of GIM in our department between May 2024 and November 2025. Preoperative S-Titin and U-Titin levels were me

The simplified method for quantifying metabolic syndrome (siMS) score reflects an increased cardiometabolic burden: adiposity, hemodynamics, and HRV findings in young adults.

PURPOSE: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) increases cardiovascular disease risk, yet early identification of pre-MetS remains challenging. The Simple Method for Quantifying MetS (siMS) score offers potential for detecting cardiometabolic burden in younger and middle-aged, relatively healthy populations. METHODS: We stratified 51 healthy adults (aged 18-60 years) into Low siMS (LMS, siMS < 2.085, n = 25) and High siMS (HMS, siMS ≥ 2.085, n = 26) groups based on the median siMS score and compared central hemodynamic parameters, heart rate variability (HRV), and microvascular function as independent pr

Changes in Upper Airway Anatomy and Apnea-Hypopnea Index in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Pilot Study.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in individuals with obesity, largely due to increased soft tissue causing upper airway narrowing. However, mechanisms of OSA improvement following weight loss are incompletely understood, particularly in Asian population, where craniofacial and soft tissue characteristics differ. This study aimed to evaluate changes in upper airway anatomy before and six months after bariatric surgery. Methods: We prospectively evaluated Indian obese patients with OSA undergoing bariatric surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and polysomnography were perf

Development and validation of machine learning models for predicting low muscle mass in patients with obesity and diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Low muscle mass (LMM) is a critical complication in patients with obesity and diabetes, exacerbating metabolic and cardiovascular risks. Novel obesity indices, such as the body roundness index (BRI), conicity index, and relative fat mass, have shown promise for assessing body composition. This study aimed to investigate the associations of these indices with LMM and to develop machine learning models for accurate and accessible LMM prediction. METHOD: Data from NHANES 2011-2018 (n = 2,176) were analyzed. Obesity was defined by body fat percentage, and LMM was determined u
