The development and psychometric validation of the Food and Alcohol Disturbance Expectancy Questionnaire (FAD-EQ) in three independent college student samples.

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD; i.e., use of compensatory behaviors to offset alcohol-related calories and/or to enhance the effects of alcohol) is prevalent among college students and associated with negative consequences. Expectancy effects may play a critical role in understanding the phenomenology and trajectory of FAD, as research from the alcohol and disordered eating literature suggest expectancies are uniquely linked to engagement in these behaviors and their related outcomes. However, little is known about FAD-specific expectancies. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically

The relationship between attentional bias to food and disordered eating in females with type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Factors which may render females with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) vulnerable to disordered eating behavior or difficulties with dietary management require further investigation. Given prior associations observed between food-related attentional biases and eating behavior in groups without diabetes, this study explored the relationships between attentional bias to healthy and unhealthy pictorial food cues and disordered eating in young adult females with and without T1DM, aged 18-40yrs. METHODS: 97 participants (41 with T1DM, 56 without) completed an initial online survey assess

Diminished quality of life among adolescents with coeliac disease using maladaptive eating behaviours to manage a gluten-free diet: a cross-sectional, mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Certain approaches to managing a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) for coeliac disease (CD) may lead to impaired psychosocial well-being, a diminished quality of life (QOL) and disordered eating. The present study aimed to understand adolescents' approaches to managing a GFD and the association with QOL. METHODS: Thirty adolescents with CD (13-17 years old) following the GFD for at least 1 year completed the Celiac Dietary Adherence Test (CDAT) and QOL survey. Their approaches to GFD management were explored using a semi-structured interview, where key themes were developed using an i

The role of experiential avoidance, rumination and mindfulness in eating disorders.

Anorexia nervosa has been associated with high levels of ruminative thoughts about eating, shape and weight as well as avoidance of emotion and experience. This study examined the associations between disorder-specific rumination, mindfulness, experiential avoidance and eating disorder symptoms. A sample of healthy females (n=228) completed a battery of on-line self-report measures. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that ruminative brooding on eating, weight and shape concerns was uniquely associated with eating disorder symptoms, above and beyond anxiety and depression symptoms. In

Perception of threat from emotions and its role in poor emotional expression within eating pathology.

Recent research has documented links between eating disorder (ED) symptomatology and emotional expression deficits. Relevant theoretical models have alluded to the functional role of disordered eating in alleviating affect that is felt to be otherwise unmanageable and threatening. Nevertheless, research examining ED individuals' perceptions of emotional states has been sparse, while empirical studies have predominantly focused on global conceptualizations of emotion, failing to address discrete affect states. The current study had three aims: (a) to determine the relation between ED symptomato

Effects of high altitude and hypophagia on mineral metabolism of rats.

Electrolyte excretion and balance were compared in meal-eating, adlibitum-fed rats maintained in Denver (1,600 m) and on Pikes Peak (4,300 m) and in meal-eating rats maintained in Denver but pair-fed to the Pikes Peak animals. Most of the changes in excretion and balance at Pikes Peak were attributable to hypophagia. At both elevations, equivalent decrements in mineral intake led to nearly equivalent decrements in mineral excretion. Comparisons of the Pikes Peak and Denver pair-fed animals, however, revealed certain changes that were unique to high altitude. These included a marked and sustain

Analysis of Permeation and Diffusion Coefficients to Infer Aging Attributes in Polymers Subjected to Supercritical CO2 and H2 Gas at High Pressures.

There is a need to understand the permeation flux behavior of polymers exposed to high-pressure and -temperature fluids continuously for long time intervals. This study investigates evidence of structural alterations in polymer specimens as indicators of material aging through the monitoring of transport coefficients at pressure steps from 10 barg to 400 barg and temperatures ranging between 30 °C and 90 °C. The continuous flow permeation methodology is a well-established technique described in the literature for applications from membrane separation processes to polymeric pressure barriers us

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation alters the attractiveness of Arabidopsis plants to diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella L.): impacts on oviposition and involvement of the jasmonic acid pathway.

Solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) can have large impacts on the interactions between plants and herbivorous insects. Several studies have documented effects of UV-B-induced changes in plant tissue quality on the feeding performance of insect larvae. In contrast, the effects of UV-B-induced plant responses on the behavior of adult insects have received little attention. We carried out a series of field and glasshouse experiments using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana L. and the crucifer-specialist insect Plutella xylostella L. (diamondback moth) to investigate the effects of UV-B on natu

Timing of food intake impacts cardiovascular and neuroendocrine physiology and risk of disease.

Despite many advances in the last 75 years in the fight against cardiovascular disease mortality, it remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Despite improved therapeutic approaches, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Mounting evidence suggests that restricting food intake to a limited period in the day or extending periods of fasting may be a lifestyle intervention that reduces progression of cardiovascular disease. Various protocols for time-restricted feeding paradigms suggest significant benefits throughout the cardiovascular system. Despite some limi
