The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia on endogenous creatinine clearance and urinary excretion of sodium, phosphorus, lysozyme, and amino acids in full-term infants. Thirty-seven healthy, breast-fed newborns who were not exposed to phototherapy were studied on their third to fifth day of life. Twenty had neonatal hyperbilirubinemia with a mean indirect bilirubin value of 16.4 mg/dl, whereas 17 who were used as controls had a mean indirect bilirubin value of 7.8 mg/dl. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mode of progression to renal failure in patients with lupus nephritis in relation to disease activity and responsiveness to corticosteroid therapy.
DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study.
SETTING: University hospital.
SUBJECTS: Twenty-eight patients with progressive lupus nephritis (Cr > or = 1.4 mg dl-1).
INTERVENTIONS: Rapidity of progression was defined as the slope of the reciprocal of serum creatinine values. Lupus activity was scored using the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index system.

We describe techniques which we developed to study the composition and regulation of airway surface fluid (ASF). ASF from isolated equine tracheal mucosa was absorbed onto or equilibrated with small strips of ashless filter paper after timed incubations in a water-saturated, 37 degrees C environment. The concentrations of two components of the complement system (C1q and C3) were measured in the urine and blood in 10 normal subjects and 134 patients with primary and secondary glomerulonephritis by using a highly sensitive enzyme immunoassay. We managed 32 neonates and infants with temporary vesicostomy and delayed valve ablation. The criterion on which successful management was gauged was estimated creatinine clearance. Renal failure or death occurred in 30% of the patients and 7% required transplantation. There was no apparent difference between our patients managed initially with vesicostomy and other series managed initially with valve ablation in preventing the complications of posterior urethral valves.

The progression of changes in rabbit kidney function following dosing with the nephrotoxin S-(1,2-dichlorovinyl)-L-cysteine (DCVC, 20-50 mg/kg) was determined. Proteinuria was observed 0.5-1 hr after administration of DCVC at doses of 20-50 mg/kg. The prevalence and causes of proteinuria were studied in a cohort of 36147 men aged 20 (born in 1956). Proteinuria was found in 139 men (0.4%) at the initial screening or examination. Further investigations reduced the number of proteinuria cases to 72 (0.2%). Persistent proteinuria was demonstrated in 46 men (0.13% of the series) and orthostatic proteinuria in 26 (0.07%).
