Plasma Metabolites Associated with OCT Features of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

PURPOSE: The most widely used classifications of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its severity stages still rely on color fundus photographs (CFPs). However, AMD has a wide phenotypic variability that remains poorly understood and is better characterized by OCT. We and others have shown that patients with AMD have a distinct plasma metabolomic profile compared with controls. However, all studies to date have been performed solely based on CFP classifications. This study aimed to assess if plasma metabolomic profiles are associated with OCT features commonly seen in AMD. DESIGN: Pros

ASCEND-Eye: Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Diabetic Retinopathy.

PURPOSE: Preclinical studies support a protective role for omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) on diabetic retinopathy (DR), but these observations have not been confirmed in randomized trials. We present randomized evidence for the effects of omega-3 FAs on DR outcomes. DESIGN: A substudy of the A Study of Cardiovascular Events iN Diabetes (ASCEND) double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 1 g omega-3 fatty acids (containing 460 mg eicosapentaenoic acid and 380 mg docosahexaenoic acid) daily for the primary prevention of serious cardiovascular events, in 15 480 UK adults at least 40 years

Sociodemographic inequities in unscheduled asthma care visits among public assistance recipients in Japan: additional risk by household composition among workers.

BACKGROUND: Public assistance programs aim to prevent financial poverty by guaranteeing a minimum income for basic needs, including medical care. However, time poverty also matters, especially in the medical care adherence of people with chronic diseases. This study aimed to examine the association between the dual burden of working and household responsibilities, with unscheduled asthma care visits among public assistance recipients in Japan. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included public assistance recipients from two municipalities. We obtained participants' sociodemographic data

Vision Need Profiles for the City of Richmond, Virginia: A Pilot Application of Calibration Methods to Vision Surveillance.

PURPOSE: People with vision problems (VPs) have different needs based on their age, economic resources, housing type, neighborhood, and other disabilities. We used calibration methods to create synthetic data to estimate census tract-level community need profiles (CNPs) for the city of Richmond, Virginia. DESIGN: Cross-sectional secondary data analysis. SUBJECTS: Anonymized respondents to the 2015 to 2019 American Community Survey (ACS). METHODS: We used calibration methods to transform the ACS 5-year tabular (2015-2019) and Public Use Microdata estimates into a synthetic data set of person

Long-Term Follow-Up of Critically Ill Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury: From Intensive Care Parameters to Patient and Caregiver-Reported Outcome.

Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with a high social and financial burden due to persisting (severe) disabilities. The consequences of TBI after intensive care unit (ICU) admission are generally measured with global disability screeners such as the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOSE), which may lack precision. To improve outcome measurement after brain injury, a comprehensive clinical outcome assessment tool called the Minimal Dataset for Acquired Brain Injury (MDS-ABI) was recently developed. The MDS-ABI covers 12 life domains (demographics, injury characteristics, comorbi

Stimulant use among patients in opioid treatment settings: Provider perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) has been a pillar of opioid addiction treatment. Opioid treatment programs (OTPs) have been faced with an escalating threat of stimulant use and related overdose deaths among patients. We know little about how providers currently address stimulant use while maintaining treatment for opioid use disorder. METHODS: We conducted 5 focus groups with 36 providers (n = 11 prescribers; 25 behavioral health staff), and collected an additional 46 surveys (n = 7 prescribers; 12 administrators; 27 behavioral health staff). Questions focused on perceptions

METformin for the MINimization of Geographic Atrophy Progression (METforMIN): A Randomized Trial.

PURPOSE: Metformin use has been associated with a decreased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression in observational studies. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of oral metformin for slowing geographic atrophy (GA) progression. DESIGN: Parallel-group, multicenter, randomized phase II clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Participants aged ≥ 55 years without diabetes who had GA from atrophic AMD in ≥ 1 eye. METHODS: We enrolled participants across 12 clinical centers and randomized participants in a 1:1 ratio to receive oral metformin (2000 mg daily) or observation for 18 months. F

Eating disorders during lockdown: the transcultural influence on eating and mood disturbances in Ibero-Brazilian population.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic has implied exceptional restrictive measures to contain its widespread, with adverse consequences on mental health, especially for those people with a background of mental illness, such as eating disorders (EDs). In this population, the influence of socio-cultural aspects on mental health has been still underexplored. Then, the main aim of this study was to assess changes in eating and general psychopathology in people with EDs during lockdown regarding the ED subtype, age, and provenance, and considering socio-cultural aspects (e.g., socioeconomical factors such

Challenges and coping strategies among young adults living with perinatally acquired HIV infection in Botswana. A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Due to antiretroviral therapy, many people with perinatally acquired HIV are surviving into young adulthood which is a critical period of human development. Research conducted in various settings globally has shown that young adults living with perinatally acquired HIV (YALPH) face multiple challenges related to HIV infection while also confronting the same challenges of young adulthood faced by other HIV-negative youth. However, there is a paucity of information on YALPH in Botswana and what needs to be done to improve their health and wellbeing. Therefore, this study explores the

Therefore, efforts to address structural factors (e.g., food access, family financial support, imprisonment as a sanction for criminal behavior) could be a critical strategy for primary prevention of ACEs and promoting adolescent health.

Understanding the long-term impact of flooding on the wellbeing of residents: A mixed methods study.

As the effects of climate change become more visible, extreme weather events are becoming more common. The effects of flooding on health are understood but the long-term impact on the well-being of those affected need to be considered. This mixed methods secondary analysis of a cross-sectional survey examined the extent to which being flooded in the past is associated with ongoing concerns about flooding. Survey data were collected from residents in Hull 11 years after the initial flooding event. Respondents were asked about the floods in 2007 and their current level of concern about flooding.

Mapping the PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) patient and caregiver journey using a patient-centered approach.

BACKGROUND: PROS disorders are driven by somatic, gain-of-function mutations in PIK3CA that result in hyperactivation of the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway. PROS encompasses a broad spectrum of overlapping phenotypes (including overgrowth and vascular malformations) that vary significantly in their severity; every case is unique, leading to different, complex experiences. Here, we aim to describe the PROS experience from the patients' and caregivers' points of view, from onset to diagnosis to treatment and support. RESULTS: The PROS patient journey was developed using
